Paul McCartney Speaks Out for Gun Control in New Tweet About Next Tuesday’s Election

0

This speaks for itself. Thanks, Paul. Happiness is NOT a warm gun unless it’s a smart metaphor!
Seriously: Paul’s late wife Linda was Jewish so technically their children are, too. His in-laws are Jewish. His current wife Nancy and her son are Jewish. I’m sure there’s been an emotional wallop for him, too, this week.

Maggie Gyllenhaal Makes it Chalk on the Wild Side as “The Kindergarten Teacher” Likes Detention

0

Jake Gyllenhaal, hosting a special screening of his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal’s new film, “The Kindergarten Teacher,” at Metrograph, was all praise for his sibling. (The movie is in theaters, and on Netflix right now.)

“I’ve been watching her act all my life,” he smiled broadly at a crowd that included Christopher Lloyd, Israel Horowitz, Diane Sawyer, and many others including his “Wildlife” director Paul Dano and co-writer Zoe Kazan.

The titular kindergarten teacher joins a roster of edgy women brought to life by Gyllenhaal’s ample talents. Think “Secretary” where her character enjoys a good spanking. In this movie, she’s a thwarted poet who recognizes the poetic gifts of one of her students, a five-year old named Jimmy Roy played by one of the producer’s children’s real life classmates, Parker Sevak. Wishing to nurture his verse, Gyllenhaal’s Lisa goes creepy, unacceptable. Every parent will get the willies watching her become more and more obsessed with savant poet Jimmy. She even tries to pass off the little kid’s potent verse as her own to gain the graces of her own hottie poetry teacher, played by Gael Garcia Bernal.

At a post screening Q&A, Ashley Banfield began by asking which is more fun to play, a prostitute (as in HBO’s “The Deuce”) or a kindergarten teacher. A prostitute, said Gyllenhaal gamely, and yet she spoke eloquently about women like Lisa whose imaginations are curbed by few opportunities and her own artistic limitations. Lisa illustrates the consequences of what happens when you starve a vibrant woman’s mind: “Women twist themselves into a culture that doesn’t care who we are. We are learning right now in our culture how little women’s experiences are heard or valued. People are hungry for something truthful.” As to her own ambitions, Maggie Gyllenhaal is adapting a novel by Elena Ferrante to direct.

Judi Dench, Kenneth Branagh, Ian McKellen Join Oscar Race with Branagh’s “All is True”

0

Just to show you the Oscar race can’t be prognosticated so easily months out:

Sony Pictures Classics has announced a qualifying run for Kenneth Branagh’s Shakespeare fantasy, “All is True.” Branagh directed and plays the Bard, Judi Dench is his wife, Anne, and Ian McKellen plays the Earl of Southampton. Ben Elton wrote the screenplay.

The year is 1613, Shakespeare is acknowledged as the greatest writer of the age. But disaster strikes when his renowned Globe Theatre burns to the ground, and devastated, Shakespeare returns to Stratford, where he must face a troubled past and a neglected family.

Haunted by the death of his only son Hamnet, he struggles to mend the broken relationships with his wife and daughters. In so doing, he is ruthlessly forced to examine his own failings as husband and father. His very personal search for the truth uncovers secrets and lies within a family at war.

SPC already has a lot on its plate: Glenn Close in “The Wife,” two foreign films– “Never Look Away” and “Capernaum.” If they’re trying an Oscar run for this one, it must be good.

Sunday Night Cable Hits Are Losing Audience Fast: “Walking Dead,” “Kardashians,” Shedding Viewers by Millions

0

The big cable TV hits on Sunday nights are fading fast.

Is it baseball? Football? Something has made Sunday night cable hits shed viewers by the millions.

For the third or fourth week in a row, “The Walking Dead” is now settled at just 5 million fans. Long gone are the halcyon days of 10 million or more. Even as character Rick Grimes approaches his death, many fewer may be there to witness it.

At the same time, literally, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” has dropped well below a million viewers to 878,000. The Kardashians’ adventures used to average 1.4 million when they were though to be in decline. Now that number looks pretty good in retrospect.

Both of these shows were soundly beaten by “Alaska: The Final Frontier,” on Discovery, with 2.1 million total. Maybe the Kardashians should join the Iditarod. (It’s not that far from Idiots– sorry.)

Even HBO is struggling on Sunday night as it waits for the return of “Game of Thrones” and “Veep.” Both Lena Dunham’s “Camping” with Jennifer Garner, and “The Deuce” with James Franco, are well below 500,000 viewers. “Camping” sank to just 384,000 pairs of eyes on Sunday. Of course, the World Series didn’t help.

Harry Potter and the Broadway Cast Mutiny: Most of the Adult Actors May Leave Over Pay Protest

0

One of the two or three biggest hits on Broadway is “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” The 2018 Tony Award winner for Best Play is a box office monster, averaging $2 million a week.

But I’m told there’s unrest among the Cursed Child, and soon the play will be known as “Harry Potter and the Cast Mutiny.”

Sources say that in the last couple of weeks, producers — wanting to re-sign actors whose contracts are coming up — have low-balled raise offers. The result is that most of the adult actors are contemplating leaving for greener pastures on TV shows like “Law & Order SVU” and “Blacklist.”

“The cast was offered $200 raises per week, which is ridiculous considering how much money the show is making. When they got the offer, the mood was that most everyone wants to leave. Only the child actors will stay because their parents are having a good time.”

When some of the actors went to penurious UK producer Sonia Friedman, she offered just another hundred bucks. The offer was declined. Those exiting could include Tony nominees Jamie Parker, Anthony Boyle, and Nomi Dumezweni.

“Cursed Child” is six months into its Broadway run, but a couple of years into the London West End run. Millions upon millions have been made, with no end in sight. But if you want to see the original Broadway cast, you’ve got to hurry. In the spring, new people will making all that magic.

A rep for the show declined to comment.

Singer Pharrell is Not “Happy” with Donald Trump, Sends Cease and Desist to Stop Using Song at Rallies

0

Pharrell is not “Happy” with Donald Trump. He has sent him a cease and desist letter telling Trump NOT TO USE his song “Happy” at his rallies. Howard King is his lawyer, and they mean business.

King wrote to Trump: On the day of the mass murder of 11 human beings at the hands of a deranged “nationalist,” you played his song “Happy” to a crowd at a political event in Indiana. There was nothing “happy” about the tragedy inflicted on our country on Saturday, and no permission was granted for use of this song for this purpose…”

Sensitive Timing: Mel Gibson, Famed Hollywood Anti-Semite, Will Star in Detective Movie Produced by Philadelphia Eagles Minority Owner

0

I like the timing of this. In a week when the discussion of anti-Semitism is at its peak thanks to the tragedy in Pittsburgh, Mel Gibson is back.

Mel, says the sensitive press release, will star in a movie called “Waldo,” from a little known British television director named Tim Kirkby. Charlie Hunnam (fresh off duds like “Papillon” and “King Arthur” will co-star with Eiza Gonzalez.)

The ironic part of the announcement it that the three producers involved are Jewish. They are Andrew Lazar, Christina Weiss Lurie, and Steve Shainberg. I’m surprised they wanted to work with him. I’m surprised he wanted to work with them.

Lurie is a minority owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, so that answers where the money is coming from. She also funds documentary films.

Mel is Hollywood’s most famous anti-Semite. He runs a church in Malibu for non-diocese Catholics who don’t believe in the Pope, and do believe Jews killed Jesus. He has $70 million parked in a private foundation to run the church.

In 2006, Mel was pulled over in a DUI and told the Jewish cop who pulled him over that “the Jews started all the wars.” Over and over, Mel has not not denied the existence of the Holocaust, not disowned statements by his father to the effect that the Holocaust never happened. His father, Hutton Gibson, is now 100 years old, seriously. Evil will not die.

In an interview I’ve cited many times, Mel said of the Holocaust, “it’s a numbers game,” meaning he thinks the number 6 million dead Jews is invented. Yet Andrew Lazar, Christina Weiss Lurie and Steve Shainberg think that’s ok.

I won’t see this movie, and most of the people I know won’t either. Mel has at least three other movies in the can or finishing up. I get it that they’re B films meant for international sales. But it doesn’t matter.

Funniest Photo and Caption of the Day Depicts Kellyanne Conway, Steven Miller as Little Orphan Annie’s Grifter Parents

0

If you don’t follow Paul Rudnick’s Twitter account, you’re missing out. Several times a week he posts pictures of Jared, Ivanka, et al with hilarious captions. Today’s is maybe the best by far, a photo of grotesque villains Kellyanne Conway and Steven Miller. The caption: “That grifter couple who up at Daddy Warbuck’s mansion, claiming to be Annie’s parents, because they heard there was a reward.”

Rudnick also a great humor piece in the New Yorker this week called All Purpose Non-Disclosure Agreement.

If you don’t know who Paul Rudnick is, he wrote among other things “Sister Act” and “Addams Family Values.” He also published a very funny novel called “Social Disease” in 1997, as well as plays like “I Hate Hamlet.”

Alec Baldwin’s Third Talk Show Episode Down to 1.6 Mil Viewers as World Series Soars

0

Alec Baldwin launched his talk show on ABC at a tricky time. He’s been up against “The Walking Dead,” The World Series, and popular shows on other networks.

Last night, Alec went up against what turned out to be the final game of the World Series. And the scoring was high in the first inning, which didn’t help. Even the charms of Ricky Gervais and Jeff Bridges as guests couldn’t be enough to thwart that situation.

The result: 1.6 million viewers, the first time he’s dropped below 2 million.  It’s pretty clear by now this show is not about ratings. That’s literally one tenth of the 16 million who watched the World Series.

Today Show Kicks Off Post-Megyn Kelly Third Hour with Al Roker Returning to Former Spot

0

The end of Megyn Kelly means back to the future. The 9am hour of Today returned this morning with none other than Al Roker as co-host. Before Megyn, Al and Tamron Hall co-hosted the hour– with better ratings.

Al co-hosted the hour with Today show co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Craig Melvin. But now Al is equal to Hoda and Craig, who co-host the regular show from 7 to 9am. Viva Al!

And no, Megyn’s name was not mentioned. She is gone, and so is her scandal.

Hoda said, “We want you to know the entire Today family will continue to bring you informative and important stories just the way we always have.”
