Oscar Winning Director Roman Polanski Sues Motion Picture Academy Over Expulsion: Claims He Never Had Notice or Fair Hearing

0

Oscar winning director Roman Polanski, 85, has filed suit against the Motion Picture Academy for his 2018 expulsion.

Polanski became a member of the Academy in 1968 and continued until he says he received an unsigned letter from them on May 3, 2018. He says he asked the Academy for reconsideration. A panel was convened on January 26, 2019, at which neither Polanski or his attorney appeared. They declined to re-instate him.

Polanski is suing on the grounds of not having a fair hearing or even any notice that he was being expelled.

Attorney Harold Braun represents Polanski. They are asking for a copy of the full administrative record from the meetings at which Polanski was ousted.

Polanski won Best Director for “The Pianist” in 2003. He was nominated in 1975 and in 1981, respectively, for directing “Chinatown” and “Tess.” In 1969 he was nominated for his “Rosemary’s Baby” screenplay. The “Tess” nomination and the “Pianist” win, as well as Adrian Brody’s Best Actor win in 2003, came years after his famous scandal over his arrest and charges of having sex with a 13 year old girl, which was well known to all Oscar voters.

In 1977, Polanski was arrested and pleaded guilty in 1978 to to the charge of engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse.  He served 42 days in Chino State Prison was released pending a hearing at which his lawyers were assured he would receive probation. When he learned that would not be the case, Polanski fled the U.S. He has lived in France ever since then. His “victim,” Samantha Geimer, who was then 13, has since argued publicly for the case to be dismissed.

Tonight, Geimer Tweeted: “Off to my mom’s 80th birthday party, are any of you old enough to remember when she was called a gold digging whore? Think of that when you still need to shit on Roman 41 years later. Ugly is as ugly does, and neither my family or his is that.”

National Enquirer Sold for $100 Million to Hudson News, Which Can Give It Prominence on Their Newsstands

0

So Hudson News did buy the National Enquirer, the Globe, and something called the National Examiner. Jimmy Cohen paid David Pecker, publishing’s lone wolf survivor, $100 million for garbage, basically.

Pecker is a genius. I’m not kidding. He unloads lawsuits, federal investigations, and the stink of all the bad juju that comes with the Enquirer. He’s out of the newsprint business.

Pecker can now concentrate on his Wenner mags– US Weekly and Men’s Fitness– plus his Bauer Brands like InStyle and Closer, and his own Star magazine.

Cohen’s Hudson newsstands will now be featuring totally Fake News in every airport, train station, supermarket they can get their hands on. Maybe he can cross pollinate with his wife, Lisa Cohen’s, upscale Galerie Magazine, or his partner Sandow Publications’s Luxe magazine.

And now Pecker has $100 million to on the hunt for more upscale brands himself. He nailed this one, boy. Bravo!

Cannes 2019: No Tarantino So Far, But Elton John “Rocketman” Will Debut with Rock Star Present, a Piano on Stage if “He Wants to Play”

0

Thierry Fremaux and Pierre Lescure announced the selections of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival this morning. It’s so far very light on Hollywood films and stars. Elton John bio pic “Rocketman” will be there. But Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a  Time in Hollywood” is so far not ready and not announced. I was first to tell you this would happen.

“It’s not ready. We hope it will be ready,” says Fremaux. The post production isn’t finished. Also James Gray’s “Ad Astra” isn’t ready.

They first discussed the new poster, featuring the recently gone Agnes Varda taken when she was just 26 years old. She was the first female director of the French New Wave. The photo is an icon of Cannes. They also talked about celebrating the 72nd year of the Cannes film market. Fremaux thanked Christine Aime, who is moving from dealing with the press to a new role of heading Archive and Memory. There was also mention of Claude Lansmann, director of “Shoah,” who recently passed away. Fremaux said the theme of this year is many thing including love and revolt. This year, he says, is very important because it’s the anniversary of the Festival that didn’t happen, in 1939, because of World War II.

This is 90% of the official selection. Some films aren’t ready, cross your fingers they’ll be ready. He’s referring to Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which this column was FIRST to report is not ready so far and can’t be announced.

Opening film is Jim Jarmusch’s “The Dead Don’t Die,” which will open in the Cannes on the same day it opens in France. This is the biggest American film, with Bill Murray, Chloe Sevigny, Tilda Swinton, Steve Buscemi, and Adam Driver— who’s had his Broadway schedule rearranged so he can be there.

Terrence Malick – “The Hidden Life,” about World War II.  No American actors, and Malick will not be there, or if he is, we won’t see him.

Pedro Almodovar– “Pain and Glory” with Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas.

Ira Sachs — “Frankie” Isabelle Huppert stars with Marisa Tomei, Greg Kinnear, and Brendan Gleeson.

Marco Bellocchio – “The Traitor”

Dardennes Brothers — “The Young Ahmed”

Claude Lelouch– Out of competition. An update of “A Man and a Woman” starring Monica Bellucci.

Nicolas Winding Refn — Two episodes of a new TV series.

Werner Herzog — a documentary.

Abel Ferrara — sent a film from Rome. Willem daFoe stars in not a documentary but a “realistic” movie (good luck with that)

“Atlantique”

Xavier Dolan — “Matthias and Maxime”

“Les Miserables”

New York Theater: Annette Bening Isn’t Only Member of Her Family on Stage This Spring As Son Stephen Ira Makes Debut Downtown

0

Everyone’s very excited about Annette Bening on Broadway this spring in Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons.” She opens next Monday. The should-have-an Oscar actress hasn’t been on Broadway in thirty years, when she debuted in “Coastal Disturbances.” (I saw her– she was terrific. We were both six years old at the time!)

But Bening won’t be the only member of her family on a New York stage this spring. I’m told her transgender son, Stephen Ira, will appear for one night only on June 5th in a new play by artist Lonely Christopher called “Endymion Dreams the Moon.” The theater is Dixon Place down on Chrystie Street.

Stephen Ira, who’s getting an MFA at the prestigious Iowa Writers Workshop, is also the son of Warren Beatty. Stephen Ira is also a co-founder and co-editor of “Vetch: A Magazine of Trans Poetry and Poetics.” He’s recently been published in the prestigious Poetry Magazine.

Coincidentally, his co-star for the night is the great Tony Torn, son of the late great Geraldine Page and the eternally cool Rip Torn. How cool is that? New York theater lives on through new generations of great actors!

Review: Faith Based “Breakthrough” Features “This is Us” Star Chrissy Metz and a New Diane Warren Song

0

“Breakthrough” could be the first breakout crossover hit for Fox since it merged with Disney.  Opening today, this faith based film boasts basketball powerhouse Steph Curry as one of the executive producers.

Directed ably and affecting by Roxann Dawson, the film’s performances, story and music lift this film to a true tearjerker with a thankfully happy ending. “Breakthrough” tells the true story of John Smith (the mega appealing Marcel Ruiz) a 14-year-old Missouri boy who in 2015 fell through thin ice while horsing around with his friends.

Fifteen long minutes went by before he was rescued, but experts were convinced he wouldn’t make it as no one who’s been underwater so long ever did.  His devoted Mom, Joyce (sweetly and fiercely played by “This Is Us” star Chrissy Metz) prayed over him and restored his breath.  John was born in Guatemala and adopted as a baby by Joyce and her equally devoted husband Brian (Josh Lucas.) The cast also includes Topher Grace, Sam Trammell Mike Coler, Taylor Mosby and Dennis Haysbert, all who are terrific.

Even though we know the outcome, the film relies on faith, even though science could have played a role. The fact that he was in freezing water, which could have helped delay neurological disaster. But who knows?  A Mom’s faith along with the community’s prayers makes you feel uplifted and hopeful.  And hey, what’s wrong with that?

Ten time Oscar nominee songwriter Diane Warren wrote the powerhouse, “I’m Standing With You,” which Metz sings (which she just sang on the ACM awards) that is a genuine knockout and could garner Warren her 11th nomination.

(Listen) Madonna Debuts New Single, “Medellin,” on iTunes Apple Radio After Beyonce Bigfoots Her with Surprise Album Release

0

Madonna is premiering her new single on Apple Beats 1 this morning with Zane Lowe. Her collaborator on “Medellin” is Maluma aka Colombian singer Juan Luis Londoño Aria.

1, 2, Cha cha cha. Maluma brings Madonna to the Reggaeton audience for a song that sounds like it’s her version of “Despacito.”

What’s interesting is that it’s got Madonna singing a shuffle beat pop song, with Maluma handling the Spanish verses.

“We built a cartel just for love/Venus is hovering above.” OK.

The song is relatively slow, unless there’s a big dance part coming up. Nope. It’s a slow record. I’m not sure where it falls in the current pop world. It’s no “Havana.”

Song is written by Madonna’s producer, Mirwais.

Beyonce Drops Surprise Film and Album, Goes Straight to Number 1, Wrecks Madonna’s Launch of New “Medellin” Single

0

Beyonce is back!

Her 40 track live “Homecoming” album was dropped overnight by Sony/Columbia and is number 1 on the iTunes album chart. In two places– Number 1 and Number 5. Like, wow.

The album is the soundtrack to her new documentary film on Netflix, which tells the story of her appearances in the past at Coachella. Beyonce is in the middle of the two 2019 Coachella weekends.

But this isn’t good news for Madonna. She’s launching a new single today at noon (stay tuned) called “Medellin.” The single is being played on Zane Lowe’s Apple Beats 1 radio show and then sent into the world.

listen to Madonna’s new single here

Now, however, Beyonce has stolen Madge’s thunder. Madonna is at the same announcing her “Madame X” album. She’s released the art and the track list. But I guess no one told her Bey was going to rain on her parade.

The crazy thing about “Homecoming” is that there’s no physical package yet, it’s only for download on iTunes and streaming on services. It also features a Destiny’s Child reunion on three songs, which is going to make fans ever crazier.

As for Madonna, we’ll see what happens today. But she can’t be too happy about this turn of events.

Media: National Enquirer’s Said-to-be Top Suitor in Sale Would Be Odd Fit with Art Magazine, Luxury Brands

0

The New York Post’s Keith Kelly, the top media writer in New York, says that American Media Inc. has a prospective suitor in its proposed sale of the National Enquirer and other supermarket tabloids.

Yesterday, Kelly spotlighted James Cohen, whose father built Hudson News, the massive newsstand and magazine distributor. Jimmy Cohen, as he is known, has tabloid ink running through his veins. His late sister was beloved gossip columnist Claudia Cohen. Jimmy, Kelly points out, is loaded after selling Hudson to to the duty-free shop pioneer Dufry. He remains on the board of Hudson.

Cohen’s only other publication is a very high end art magazine known to few wealthy and high-falutin’ types, called Galerie Magazine. It’s considered a vanity project for his wife, Lisa, who’s reportedly burned through staff and money like there’s no tomorrow. Their most recent editor who didn’t last was Margaret Russell, who came from Architectural Digest and Elle Decor, and is finishing up a six year term on the Kennedy Center board, appointed by President Barack Obama.

These are not people who flip through the National Enquirer. Or want to know about Jeff Bezos’ beeswax.

Then there’s Adam Sandow, the publisher and lifestyle guru from Miami whose company has been the real engine behind Galerie.  His company, called Sandow, also publishes “Luxe,” one of those thick-with-ads for things no one can afford mags. He’s also involved in high-end beauty magazines, the kind with really thick, glossy pages. These people have never felt newsprint in their hands, except when it wraps fish. They do not know about Wendy Williams or her errant husband, or the 29 year old kid who sued his parents for throwing out his porn collection. They think Kardashian is a carpet store on lower Fifth Avenue.

So this should be interesting. The best thing David Pecker can do is get rid of the Enquirer, and fast. But Cohen and his associates may not be the right, er, fit.

Ratings: “Game of Thrones” was a Game-Changer for HBO Comedies “Barry” and “Veep,” Which More Than Tripled and Doubled Their Numbers

0

“Game of Thrones” 11.7 million viewers on HBO itself (17 mil across all HBO platforms) was a Game-changer for the network.

Both “Barry” and “Veep,” which follow at 10pm and 10:30pm, had huge increases because of “GoT.”

“Barry” shot up from around 424,000 viewers the previous week to 1,775,000. Yikes! And “Veep” went up from 473K to over 1 million.

Of course, “Barry,” the subtly hilarious show about a hit man, is a broader experience. When the “GoT” viewers got to “Veep” they witnessed deft political satire and a character– Amy– who had an abortion, and then went back to work. I don’t know if HBO planned it that way, but the timing of the “Veep” episode was excellent. “GoT” gave them a much bigger audience.

Meanwhile, even Showtime’s “Billions” held its own against “Thrones.” They still managed 751,000 viewers, down just 100,000. So we’ll see how DVR viewing went over the next couple of days. I did have to DVR “Billions,” but it was worth it.

Cannes Announcement Likely Not to Include Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”– As Reported Here April 9th

0

The trade magazines are starting to predict the announcement of films at Cannes this year.

The official announcement comes on Thursday, just before the Mueller report is released. What a day!

I told you on April 9th that Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood” was not ready, was not a lock, and would not be announced. The film isn’t ready.

Now the trades are backing off “Once Upon a Time.” Remember when one of them insisted it would play on May 21st, the 25th anniversary of “Pulp Fiction” at Cannes?

Now we’re hearing a list of usual suspects– Almodovar, Malick, Loach. As for the latter: no one in America cares about Ken Loach. No one in America has ever cared about him. He’s also a supporter of the BDS (Big Dumb Shits) who are anti-Israel. So we can skip him. (Boxofficemojo.com doesn’t even monitor his films. LOL.)

I know that Thierry Fremaux has many terrific titles up his sleeve. And Tarantino? Like I’ve said before, a wet print can dry on the flight over.
