Beyonce Lead Track “American Requiem” from New Album Unmasked as Stephen Sills’ 1967 Classic “For What It’s Worth”

0

The credits for Beyonce’s “Cowboy Carter” album are finally trickling in, and we’re learning the secret sauce: real songs.

The real songs are by Paul McCartney, Dolly Parton, Chuck Berry, Brian Wilson, Linda Martell, Willie Nelson. The anchors of the album are all solid songs from the past that Beyonce reinterprets so well. They show off her voice to its best.

But what about that opening track, “American Requiem”? I had skipped over it a bit because of all the track about “Blackbird” and “Jolene.” Buried in the credits for “American Requiem” is one name of the twelve songwriters that shows that the song is based on a classic from the 1960s.

Indeed, the music for “American Requiem” is a reworked version of Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth.” That’s why is it’s so catchy. It has different lyrics, but the song would not be singable without the familiar melody Stills introduced 60 years ago with his band, Buffalo Springfield.

This is called an “interpolation” these days. I call it a cover with different words. Beyonce and Jay Z have slapped their names on it, along with Jon Batiste.

There’s no “American Requiem” without the original American requiem by Stills. That song crystallized the resistance to the Vietnam war among young people, and the fight for civil rights. It’s all in the key verse:

There’s battle lines being drawn
Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

Let’s hope Stills’s reps got the bulk of that publishing, in perpetuity.

Great News! Oscar Nominee Felicity Huffman Returns to Acting with Gig on “Criminal Minds: Evolution”

0

This is great news.

Felicity Huffman, who has an Oscar nominee for the movie “Transamerica,” is coming back to TV.

Huffman will guest star on “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” the streaming version of the hit CBS show on Paramount Plus.

A gifted actress, Felicity hit a major road bump in the college admissions scandal. She paid the price, and took a hit to her career.

Not only does she have the Oscar nomination on her resume, but Emmys, too, and a Golden Globe nomination. She’s best known for being one of the “Desperate Housewives.” She’s been married for eons to actor William H. Macy.

Let’s hope this is the beginning of a Huffman Renaissance. It’s overdue!

Bruce Springsteen Announces “Farewell Tour,” Gets COVID in Rare Acting Job on Penultimate “Curb Your Enthusiasm”

0

Bruce Springsteen made a rare appearance as an actor in a TV series last night.

He appeared on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” as himself, or a version of himself. Larry David’s manager, Jeff, says Bruce wants to meet him before his upcoming shows in Los Angeles. (The shows are real, by the way.)

“Springteen” says he’s on his “farewell tour” — which in real life isn’t true. He also gets COVID from Larry, and is tortured in the process by David/

Bruce is the best part of a lackluster episode, like most of this final season. “Curb” ends this Sunday on HBO after 12 seasons over 22 years.

Bruce has appeared otherwise in one episode of his friend, Stevie van Zandt’s, “Lilyhammer,” and as himself in one minor movie. He acquits himself pretty, pretty, pretty well!

Donald Trump Media Stock Crashing: Down 26% Since Opening Bell, Reports of $58 Million Loss

0

The party’s over for Donald Trump’s media company Truth Social.

The stock price for DJT is crashing. It’s already fallen 24% since the market opened. It’s now 1pm.

There are many reports that the company is insolvent, that it lost $58 million in 2023. Trump himself holds 79% of the stock, which means he’s not having a good day at all.

The stock opened around $60 this morning and is trading around $45 right now at 1:15pm.

Keep refreshing this afternoon. Meanwhile, follow along.

Oliver Anthony, Last Year’s Overnight Sensation, Drops First Album: Will Fans Still Show Up?

0

Last year Oliver Anthony was the overnight sensation of all time. An unsigned singer whose political bent was to the right, Anthony had a massive hit with a song called “Rich Men North of Richmond.”

A bunch of his tracks hit iTunes, and they were all over the top 100.

Anthony resisted a major record contract. The result is that today he dropped his first album, called “Hymnal of a Troubled Man’s Mind,” with no notice. In the middle of Beyonce Weekend. “Hymnal” debuted at number 4 on iTunes today.

Will the album or any of its tracks equal last year’s crazy popularity? The 38 minute collection contains Bible passages between the songs. Most of the songs have already been available. As far as individual tracks go, none of them have hit iTunes. Only “Rich Men,” which isn’t on the album, is in at number 94.

Good luck to Oliver. This may be his first, and last, album.

Bette Midler Encourages a Frustrated Lizzo Not to Quit Show Business: “We Need You”

0

You may have heard over the weekend that singer Lizzo — beset with lawsuits and social media criticism — announced she was quitting show business.

But the legendary Bette Midler begged her not to give up. She wrote: “I can’t believe that the extraordinary #Lizzo has quit the music business. Lizzo, never let the bastards grind you down. You have changed our lives, don’t do this to us, WE NEED YOU!! I’m gonna cry.”

Lizzo wrote:“I’m getting tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet. All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it. But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it.”

She added: “I’m constantly up against lies being told about me for clout & views. Being the butt of the joke every single time because of how I look … my character being picked apart by people who don’t know me and disrespecting my name.”

Her final line: “I QUIT!”

It’s probably just blowing off steam. But Lizzo ran into problems when some narrow minded people criticized her for performing on Thursday night at Radio City for the re-elect Biden campaign. Presidents Obama and Clinton were there, too.

But Lizzo’s not going anywhere. Her cases will be settled and everyone will go back to their lives. Trust Bette Midler. Her career has gone for 50 years. She sees the big picture!

Beyonce’s “Cowboy Carter” Sold Stunning 130,000 Copies on Friday, Beatles Credit for “Blackbird” Fixed

0

Beyonce’s “Cowboy Carter” album will be a blockbuster smash this week.

On Friday alone, the country-fied album sold 130,000 copies including streaming. If that kept up for seven days, just think of the results.

Spotify says the album had 76 million streams on Friday. So the total above also includes Apple, Amazon, etc.

There are still no credits listed on Beyonce’s website, and nothing the Sony publicists can hand out. No one seems to know who wrote what beyond “Jolene” — by Dolly Parton — and “Blackbird” by the Beatles.

After I wrote that “Blackbird” was attributed to Lennon, McCartney, and Knowles Carter on Wikipedia, the entry was changed back to Lennon-McCartney only.

“Blackbird” was never a single from the 1968 Beatles “White Album.” It’s always been an album track. So its presence at number 4 on iTunes is pretty swell. Right now, Beyonce has the top 4 tracks on iTunes and a dozen or more titles scattered through the top 100.

One track I really like is “Protector,” sung with Beyonce’s daughter, Rumi. I hope we can credits and lyrics this week on that one and all the others.

Everyone is praising how this album has changed everything for Black country artists. But you do know Charley Pride was a superstar. And I told you about the album, “Rhythm, Country and Blues.” Has everyone forgotten Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road”? It caused quite a commotion when it was released.

Short memories help sales!

Box Office Bonanza for Godzilla and King Kong: $80 Million Opening Weekend Stomps on “Ghostbusters”

0

If you scare them, they will come. Or something like that.

Apparently audiences were much more frightened by Godzilla and King Kong’s new flick than by the one from the Ghostbusters.

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” stomped all over “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” with an $80 million opening weekend.

“Frozen Empire” made $15 million and finished second. Total is $73 million.

A new empire vs. a frozen one, seems logical I guess.

Not a lot of action otherwise at the box office. “Dune Two” crossed $250 million. “Kung Fu Panda 4” hit $150 million.

There are a lot of miscellaneous movies playing to near empty houses, titles you would only go to if you were already in the lobby, it was raining, and you figured, Why not? For example, something called “Arthur the King” with Mark Walhberg has made almost $20 million in 3 weeks. It’s one of Wahlberg’s lowest grossing films. They should have put the talking toy bear in it.

This coming weekend we get Woody Allen’s “Coup de Chance,” an A plus mystery that no one should miss. Also, Dev Patel’s “Monkey Man.”

Beyonce Sends the Beatles’ “Blackbird” to Top 5 on iTunes, Wikipedia Says She Wrote It!

0

Beyonce sings a magnificent cover of the Beatles’ “Blackbird” on her new album.

The version is so lovely that the track is at number 4 on iTunes.

Paul McCartney wrote the song about Black women struggling during the civil rights protests of the 1960s. That’s an old story, but now it’s everywhere thanks to a press release put out by Beyonce’s team. (The story is in dozens of iterations across the internet including from Rolling Stone, as if it were a new idea.)

So far there are no posted credits on Beyonce.com for 25 of the 27 songs on “Cowboy Carter.”

But Paul McCartney might he surprised to learn that Beyonce Knowles Carter is listed a co-writer on Wikipedia. Beyonce was born in 1981. The song was written in 1968. And the only person Paul McCartney shares credits with is John Lennon.

Go figure. Maybe Beyonce thinks she gets a credit for adding an I to her title, “Blackbiird.”

I’m sure someone will be on the phone come Monday morning!

Alex Borstein, aka Susie from “Mrs. Maisel,” Warns Film Group in Speech: “Do not f* with a woman from New York!”

0

“Do not fuck with a woman from NYC,” exclaimed comedian/actress Alex Borstein, accepting her award for The Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment Made in NY Award at this year’s NYWFT Muse Awards.

The “Mrs. Maisel” star reminded 700 guests seated for a sumptuous steak dinner at Cipriani 42nd Street, she was not actually “made in New York,” but everyone seemed to think she was, maybe because as Susie Myerson she epitomized the brash, pushy person who could be a talent agent.

The actress said her parents never called to congratulate her for any of her work, but they did for “Mrs. Maisel.”

“You were good,” said Borstein’s mother, while her father asked, “Why weren’t you the lead?” Her mother — yes, her own mother — replied, “Because the skinny one with the perfect tits is the lead.” This may have bothered her growing up, she said, but as the Muses dispense advice, now she knows: “You are enough.”

Canadian actress Tantoo Cardinal — whose personal story informed Martin Scorsese’s Oscar nominated “Killers of the Flower Moon” — had gratitude to family, particularly her grandmother who picked her up from the “dregs of genocide.” When her grandfather spoke her name, she said, “I knew he knew me.” And when he died, she wore an eagle feather in her hair for him. That was brave, she told the crowd. Of indigenous descent, she was taught to be ashamed of who she was.

“Wonderstruck” and “A Quiet Place” actress Millicent Simmons — whose hearing impairment has not affected her career — accepted the Loreen Arbus Changemaker Award. Her mother was discouraged from learning to sign by doctors who thought that would slow her, a deaf baby, in learning to speak. A riveting performer, in “A Quiet Place II,” she led the cast including writer/director John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, and often gave them notes.

Actress Kyra Sedgwick has taken on directing. Her husband Kevin Bacon, who is one degree away from. advised her: she was great at directing, if only she would never say “I’m sorry,” as in, Sorry, but we’re doing another take. This gave the audience a hearty, knowing chuckle.

One comedienne was missed by all: Fran Drescher — who had spent the year doing serious work in shepherding actors through strikes to a successful new contract — had a sad reason to be absent. Now, She was sitting shiva for her father. Morty Drescher passed away March 20th at age 94.

Drescher sent remarks that included: “I am his daughter and I am so happy he got to see me not only achieve success as an actor, but even more importantly as a labor leader because doing volunteer work on behalf of the greater good was the ethics by which he raised me.”
