Review: “Scoop” Lets Gillian Anderson See if the Truth Is Out There About Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein

0

“Scoop” the Netflix film about the train wreck that was the BBC’s Newsnight 2019 Prince Andrew interview, airing now, tells the story of the behind-the-scenes goings on — for the year before — to secure the interview, then recreates the famed cringe-y sit down in Buckingham Palace.

Directed by Philip Martin, the film is written by Peter Moffatt and Geoff Bussetil. At the Virtual press conference, some of the terrific cast spoke about their experiences playing real life people. Gillian Anderson (she always delivers) plays the interviewer Emily Maitlis, Billie Piper plays Sam McAlister, the indefatigable producer most responsible for scoring the big get and Rufus Sewell plays the hapless, majorly clueless Prince Andrew trying to explain away his friendship with the notorious now dead Jeffrey Epstein.

Anderson recalls they filmed the interview in just one day. “It was Rufus’s first day of film. We both walked into the set which was a recreation of the room in Buckingham Palace. Our idea was to film it from beginning to the end. We never rehearsed it. He called action and it began. Rufus’s portrayal was uncanny and accurate in every detail.”

McAlister, also an Executive Producer on the film, was in that famed room once again. “I thought I was there all over again, exactly the same experience.” She added her thoughts on the embattled state of journalism. “This movie is an homage to the BBC, to the seriousness of this important situation. The moment Prince Andrew faces off with Emily, that is an iconic moment in journalism, which was secured by mostly women. Holding powerful people accountable matters. We need journalism, because it matters.”

Anderson added “The film is a thriller. I don’t know how he managed that, as everyone knows the result. What Philip did is masterful.”

“Scoop” is indeed masterful in telling the story of what went on behind the scenes and then the now legendary sit down itself. “Scoop” is definitely an entertaining, impressive watch.

Beyonce Cheating? Her Version of the Beatles’ “Blackbird” Is Actually Karaoke, Sung Over the 1968 Track

0

The Beyhive will not be happy about this little story.

But I surprised when the credits were finally released for “Cowboy Carter” that Beyonce is basically performing karaoke on “Blackbird.”

Yes, she sings, and the arrangement of voices is exquisite. But when I first heard it a week ago, I wondered who was playing such a beautiful guitar behind her.

Turns out no one is — or rather, she licensed the instrumental track from the Beatles’ original recording. Instead of bringing in a great guitarist — or even McCartney himself — Beyonce and friends just paid for the 1968 track, presumably a newer remix from Giles Martin, and sang over it.

If you were in a restaurant and did this, it would be called Karaoke. It wouldn’t be called “interpolation” or “Sampling.”

It would also be called “cheating.”

Hundreds of thousands of cover songs have been recorded over the last fifty years, all of which involved making a record sound new with fresh vocals and instrumentals. When Elton John made “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” he didn’t license the old track and sing over it. He created a new recording. Ditto Earth, Wind & Fire on “Got to Get You into My Life.”

Get the point?

But this has become acceptable in the hip hop world, and now it’s bled over to this situation. Beyonce was introduced to this bad behavior eons ago when she took the horn riff from the Chi Lites song, “Are You My Woman” and made it into “Crazy in Love.” After that, everything was fair game.

I’m more disappointed than angry. I was waiting for those album credits eagerly to see who was enlisted from the great pool of musicians in the world. But it took Beyonce’s team a week to get it together. The result is that “Cowboy Carter” is not the organic album that was promised, but is really put together by technicians and programmers.

Yes, Virginia, there is no Santa Claus.

Here they are, the exact same length, of course. Good to sing at the bar between servings of wings (not Wings):

Beyonce: Huge Opening Week for “Cowboy Carter” with 418,000 Copies But Will Lack of PR Kill it Off?

As predicted, Beyonce had a big first week with her new album.

“Cowboy Carter” sold 418,000 copies total. Of those 170,000 were paid downloads. CDs aren’t even ready yet for sale.

Beyonce far exceeded the number 2 album by Future and Metro Boomin, which finished with 134,877.

But the power of “Cowboy Carter” is already diminishing. A new release by J. Cole has toppled Beyonce for the number 1 spot on the album chart at iTunes.

Beyonce has also lost her hold on the singles charts, with ceding the top 2 spots. Earlier this week, she had the top four of five.

What’s going on? Hubris, I think. Beyonce refuses to do interviews or even TV performances. She’s not supporting the album. If the whole thing collapses, it’s her own fault. She should be out there promoting this record!

It’s not like she doesn’t have a great publicist. But if you say no to everything, and refuse to play The Game, it’s going to backfire. And new releases are always coming!

Donald Trump’s Truth Social Stock Falls Another 12%, Down $16 Since Monday

0

Truth Social is tanking and not just once or twice.

From Monday to Friday, Donald Trump’s social media site has dropped $16 in value. Today it fell another 12%, landing at 40 bucks.

Trump is losing money now despite his bragging about millions in cash, and so on. The fact is, Truth Social or Trump Media has not been able to regain any traction.

This is largely because when the hard numbers came out early this week — not the bloviating — Truth Social is a loser. It lost almost $60 million last year before hitting the stock market this last week.

The showboating by Trump over this stock is no different than any of his other voluminous lies. His base still doesn’t get it. Not a single word out of his mouth is factual. Maybe the fans who invested and lost money in this thing will finally wake up.

Box Office: “Godzilla” Crosses $100 Mil, Stomps All Over Previews for “Monkey Man” and “First Omen”

0

It was previews last night for two new films.

Both “Monkey Men” and “The First Omen” opened to $1.4 million and $725,000 respectively. That’s good news for the former, and not so great for the latter.

Neither did as well as “Godzilla x Kong,” which crossed $100 million with a $4 million take on Thursday night.

It’s not an exciting weekend coming up. But “Ripley” on Netflix and also “The Gentlemen” should keep audiences couch bound while we wait for some big releases. Coming soon: “Civil War” and “Challengers.”

Earthquake! New York Tri-State Area Hit by 4.8 Rocker, Rare and Unexpected: Felt Like a Truck Rumbling By

0

As you know by now, New York has been rocked!

We had a 4.8 earthquake around 10:23am, one hour ago. They say people felt it as far away as Baltimore and Philadelphia.

I’m up in Connecticut today, about 65 miles north of Manhattan. I felt it immediately. The building I was in is near the highest point on the Eastern Seaboard, about 10 miles away. The building shook like mad for about 7 seconds. I thought a truck was rumbling by on the main street.

At first there’s disbelief because earthquakes don’t happen here. But I’ve been through a few in California and know the feeling well. Back in 2005, I was on the top floor of a hotel in Los Angeles when something similar happened. It was very jarring.

Well, God is mad at us. Why? Because of our sports teams? Trump? This was a warning!

Patti Scialfa Makes a Rare Appearance on Springsteen Show, Singing Two Duets with Bruce

0

For most of Bruce Springsteen’s tour over the last year, wife Patti Scialfa has been MIA.

Patti was a key part of the E Street Band for past tours, but for this one she opted out. She had her reasons including welcoming a grandchild at home.

But tonight Patti was back in the show, in Los Angeles, and the fans went nuts. She sang two songs with Bruce — “Fire” and “Tougher than the Rest.”

I wish I’d been there! Patti is a blistering rocker with a great voice. Was this a one off thing? Or will we see more of her? And PS, she looks amazing in the videos.

Welcome back, Patti!

Is Ratings Giant “NCIS” Petering Out After 22 Seasons? Numbers Dropping Every Week to Lowest Ever

0

“NCIS” has long been a ratings colossus for CBS. Now in its 22nd season, the procedural hour has spun off several iterations and always seemed invincible.

But this past Monday brought the lowed rated episode ever. With just 5.9 million viewers, the episode was more less tied with one from September 2022.

Every single week this season has shown a steady and unabated decline. On February 12th, episode 1 came in at 7.3 million. Six weeks later, we’re at 5.896 million.

This news comes at a tricky time since “NCIS” is going to launch a spin off on Paramount Plus with Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo reprising their former roles. At this point, those two should come to the main show and help prop it up. Either that or bring back Mark Harmon.

“NCIS” will certainly be renewed for Season 23. But if things keep going this way, season 24 seems shaky.

Paul McCartney Says He’s Told Beyonce He’s “So Proud” of her “Killer Version” of His Classic Song, “Blackbird”

0

Paul McCartney is so happy and impressed with Beyonce’s take on his 1968 song, “Blackbird.”

He says in a post they spoke on FaceTime, and he congratulated her.

Paul is right. It’s the standout track on her “Cowboy Carter” album. I predict it will win awards!

Paul wrote:

“I am so happy with @beyonce’s version of my song ‘Blackbird’. I think she does a magnificent version of it and it reinforces the civil rights message that inspired me to write the song in the first place. I think Beyoncé has done a fab version and would urge anyone who has not heard it yet to check it out. You are going to love it!

I spoke to her on FaceTime and she thanked me for writing it and letting her do it. I told her the pleasure was all mine and I thought she had done a killer version of the song. When I saw the footage on the television in the early 60s of the black girls being turned away from school, I found it shocking and I can’t believe that still in these days there are places where this kind of thing is happening right now. Anything my song and Beyoncé’s fabulous version can do to ease racial tension would be a great thing and makes me very proud.”

The Awful Truth: Justin Timberlake Now an Adult Artist, New Album Is a Dud With Just 130,000 Copies Sold

0

It’s not easy out there for pop stars over a certain age.

Jennifer Lopez learned that the hard way recently. Her album, “This Is Me…Now” was instant failure, dropping off the charts after a week.

Now Justin Timberlake has had to face that awful truth. His “Everything I Thought It Would Be” is dead. Total sales including streaming come to 130,000 copies. Of those, 45,000 were CDs and downloads.

The album yielded one hit single, the very catchy “Selfish.” But nothing else from the collection made a dent anywhere, not even a surprise Nsync reunion single.

But “Everything” — with an especially difficult title to market — was lacking a main Timberlake ingredient — the producer and writer Timbaland, who’d been Justin’s collaborator for years. He’s barely credited. And that speaks volumes.

The best Timberlake song of all was a fluke. “Can’t Stop the Feeling” is from the “Trolls” soundtrack, circa 2010. It’s one of the most infectious dance tracks of all time. In a drug store the other day, I saw people tapping their fingers to their coats while this song played and they looked for shampoo. You can’t stop the feeling!

“Everything,” however, is dull. Aside from “Selfish,” none of the songs has a real hook. There’s nothing to come back to. Once you’ve traveled the distance of the collection, you’re done.

It’s odd to think of Justin Timberlake as over the hill. He’s from a boy band. He’s young! He has a great, R&B voice and the right instincts. But as with JLo, the record buyers have moved on. But would I go see him live? In a nano second!
