2020 SAG Awards Surprise Snubs: “Little Women,” Clint Eastwood, De Niro, Gives Push to “Parasite,” “Jojo Rabbit”

0

Here are the nominations this morning for the SAG Awards. In past years the Ensemble Award has been a pretty close sign of the Academy Awards. It’s not always the case, but more often than not it’s spot on because the SAG voters are the biggest constituency within the Academy.

The snubs are crazy : no Saoirse Ronan for “Little Women” or anything for that movie. No “Marriage Story” in Best Ensemble. No De Niro for “Irishman.” Nothing for Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell.” Also missing anything for “The Two Popes.”

Scarlett Johansson received two nominations, for “Jojo Rabbit” in supporting and “Marriage Story” in lead.

One big surprise nomination: Taron Egerton as Elton John in “Rocketman.” Good for him!

Other awards already announced did not include Nicole Kidman or Jamie Foxx, each of whom deserves to be included.

The only nomination from network TV is Sterling K. Brown for “This Is Us” from NBC.

Linda Solomon’s Extraordinary Book of Intimate Aretha Franklin Photographs is the Holiday Gift of the Year

0

Linda Solomon has been a journalist and photographer in Detroit her whole life. She knows all about celebrities. Her sister our pal Jill Rappaport, of “Today” show and pet advocacy fame. The girls grew up in Detroit with all the great Motown and soul stars including Aretha Franklin, who became a family friend. Many years ago, Jill even hosted a party for Aretha at her magical “log cabin” in the Hamptons, where Sam Moore’s band played and I got to dance with the Queen of Soul.

Now Linda has published a book of her photographs of Aretha over the years. Jill gave her the title, “The Queen Next Door” because even though she royalty, Aretha loved to go out in her hometown and do ordinary things. She loved to shop and dine out and hit the local casino. Even though she had periods of living in New York and Los Angeles, she always came home to Detroit.

Linda has really captured the real Aretha in gorgeous photos taken during her Clive Davis Renaissance period, the 80s. Aretha was not heavy then. She was trim and enjoying her second swipe to success and fame. She practically glows while her hits like “Freeway of Love” and “Jump to It” introduced her to a new generation of fans.

Solomon’s book is an important chronicle of Aretha’s life. She got Aretha’s niece, Sabrina, to write a few words, and 90 year old Burt Bacharach– who wrote “I Say A Little Prayer” with Hal David– to add a foreword. (For the record, both Aretha’s version and Dionne Warwick’s are equal classics that show how different vocalists will interpret a great song.) Bacharach sums it up: “She was just amazing.”

Many of the photos are Aretha with family, with boyfriend and really best friend Willie Wilkerson and lots of celebrities in there including Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards, and Whoopi Goldberg. But the best pictures are of Aretha when she’s unaware, relaxed, contemplative, or just enjoying herself. The woman with this extraordinary voice was also quite brilliant, introspective, and philosophical. But she was also a lot of fun, and Solomon has really captured that.

“Aretha was private,” Linda says in her introduction. “I respected this and she trusted me.” Beautiful work!

William Shatner Wants Out of 18 Year Marriage — His Fourth– At Age 88: Adult Kids May Be Bidding for Him

0

William Shatner certainly doesn’t look or seem like he’s 88– yes, 88– years old.

But the once and forever Capt. James T. Kirk is that age. And now he wants out of his 18 year marriage to his fourth wife.

Shatner was married three times before he hooked up with Elizabeth Martin. Before that he was married to Gloria Rand, Marcy Lafferty and Nerine Kidd.

With Rand he had three daughters, now grown and with families. One daughter, Melanie, is married to actor Joel Gretsch. Shatner divorced Gloria and married Marcy Lafferty in 1973. They were married until 1996, had no kids, but used to appear a lot on game shows before the “Star Trek” movies revived Shatner’s career. He married Nerine Kidd in 1999. She was found floating in his swimming pool in 1999. Two years later he married Elizabeth.

Shatner still has time for at least one more wife. You never know. All that time in space may have helped his longevity even though it didn’t help Spock, McCoy, Uhura, or Scottie. Why divorce now? Those three daughters and their families are probably looking at the big picture. We’ve seen this before. Shatner is said to be worth $100 million thanks to a horse farm, investments, and 14 years the pitchman for Price Line.

Of course, Elizabeth may have other ideas. But if there’s a pre-nup in place the family probably wants to oust her now rather than deal with her as a widow. It happens all the time. Casey Kasem’s family certainly wanted Jean Kasem out, but they were out. The rest was misery.

Remember, Shatner is no day at the beach. He didn’t even go to Nimoy’s funeral.

Paul McCartney’s Animated Film “High in the Clouds” Moves to Netflix– I Told You About This Film in 2011

0

Back in July 2011 I told you exclusively that Michael Lynne and Bob Shaye, the founders of New Line Cinema, had made a deal with Paul McCartney for an animated film based on his children’s book called “High in the Clouds.” Lynne and Shaye had just started their new Unique Films.

Time passed, the project drifted. Sadly, the beloved Michael Lynn passed away this year, a shock to everyone.

Now comes news that “High in the Clouds” has moved to Netflix, like everything else. McCartney is still producing and writing original songs. The screenplay is from Jon Croker, who is directing the piece based on the book which was co-written with Geoff Dunbar and Philip Ardagh.

Lynne and Shaye keep their producing credit, their last one together. Other producers are Sidonie Dumas, Christophe Riandee, Nicolas Atlan and Terry Kalagian (Gaumont).

This is one of many projects for Paul. He’s also writing the music for the Broadway version of “It’s a Wonderful Life.” You can also hear many interstitial interviews with him on the Beatles Sirius XM channel (18) that are really lovely.

Broadway: “Jagged Little Pill” Gets No Bounce from Opening, “Beetlejuice” Will Close Next June, Tony Goldwyn Heads to “Inheritance”

0

Busy week on Broadway with last week’s box office numbers just in.

“Jagged Little Pill,” based on Alanis Morissette’s shrieky album from the mid 1990s, opened to mixed to good reviews. The Times loved it because they saw it in Cambridge at ART when it opened and over-raved. They had to stick to their story that they “made” a show.

But the headlines for a lot of reviews were “Jagged Little Pill is hard to swallow.” Indeed. After the reviews, the show should have gotten a box office bump. But it only rose about $60,000 from the prior week, and still can’t hit $1 million for the week. This isn’t a great sign of things to come. Maybe the pill takes longer to absorb.

“Beetlejuice” broke a house record this week, and has been doing excellent business. But the producers see the future. So the show will close next June and start a national tour. I’m surprised. But they’re being pushed out of the Winter Garden Theater by “The Music Man” with Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster. This is a Scott Rudin production, so expect ticket prices that need a mortgage. Maybe “Beetlejuice” will return after a break to a less expensive theater.

Tony Goldwyn, one of our best actors, will be joining “The Inheritance.” He’s taking over for John Benjamin Hickey, who has to go direct his best pals Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick in “Plaza Suite.” That show opens in Boston on February 5th before coming to New York in March.

Eurythmics Reunite, Play for 1st Time in 6 Years for Sting and Trudie Styler’s Blow Out 30th Anniversary Rainforest Show

0

It was such a hot night at the Beacon Theater last night that Bruce Springsteen actually cut a song because the night was running too long.

The 30th anniversary Rainforest Foundation concert, produced by Sting and producer wife Trudie Styler, was such an extravaganza of talent and hits that it required two famous photographers, Brigitte Lacombe and Kevin Mazur.

The night was full of fun, but it was based around the most serious threat to the Earth of all environmental concerns. As Styler told the crowd: “I feel we’re losing the most important battle in the history of humanity,” she paused, “Somewhere safe to live.”

The show– themed as an 80s throwback to coincide with the Foundation’s beginnings in the late 80s– also brought together a pair I never thought I’d see play together: Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp. And they had a ball together, singing both Bruce’s “Glory Days” and John’s “Little Pink Houses.”

Because Peter Gabriel was tied up in London, Sting honored him with a throwdown version of “Sledgehammer.” The house is still reverberating.

James Taylor, unusually animated, performed “Your Smiling Face” and “Up on the Roof.”

Adrienne Warren stood in for Tina Turner, whom she’s praying on Broadway, since Tina once guest starred for the Rainforest Foundation. Warren brought down the house with a roar on “Simply the Best.”

But it was the set by the Eurythmics– Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart– that catalyzed the room. They broke up officially in 1990, and have played together rarely since then. The duo offered, as Downey said, a “trifecta of hits” that included “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” “Would I Lie to You,” and “Here Comes the Rain Again.” Lennox’s voice is richer and deeper than ever. Stewart’s guitar soared and he remained happily enigmatic. They were sensational. (Their last performance was 2014, for the Beatles TV special on CBS.)

Did I mention that the more than affable host for the night was Robert Downey, Jr.? He opened the night singing Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love,” recreating Palmer’s famous video. Downey was about as cool a host as you could hope for. Something about the night made everyone on stage very candid and heartfelt. Downey credited Trudie Styler with rescuing him during a career lull pre- Tony Stark and putting him in a gem of a movie called “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints.” (The film introduced Channing Tatum and Shia LaBeouf, two other Styler “discoveries.”)

Meantime, the Beacon was full like to the rafters, I mean really every seat was taken and them some. Spotted in the crowd: actor Val Kilmer, Clive Davis, Julie Chen, Brian Stokes Mitchell, billionaire hedge funder Ray Dalio, “Lion King” writer Irene Mecchi, journalist Alina Cho, retired music manager Kathy Schenker.

Even Clive– who gives the Party of Parties before the Grammys every years– was impressed. I have rarely seen production values like this for a charity concert, but Sting and Trudie took three years off since their last one to really have a knockout night. (This included the great Narada Michael Walden presiding over a huge, magnificent orchestra that included 7 singers.)

Over 30 years the couple has raised millions and millions of dollars and the awareness of the world to help the indigenous people of Brazil and the rain forest.

Other performers included Bob Geldof, Debbie Harry, Ricky Martin, rapper DMC, Shaggy, Zucchero (singing with a pre-taped Luciano Pavarotti, who was way out of town), and Joe Sumner, who had a terrific showing on David Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes.” I say ‘other performers,’ but each one was tremendous. The great Lisa Fischer went one on one with Sting on his 80s hit “We’ll Be Together.” They each gave as good they got.

The night ended with the whole group singing Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” before the A Listers headed over to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel for a toast to three decades of remarkable philanthropy. As Styler pointed out, there’s work to be done: Brazil’s president Bolsonaro allowed the rainforest to burn this year, and then blamed the fires on, of all people, Leonardo DiCaprio. (No one knew who either one of those people were Sting and Trudie started the foundation!)

Said Styler, dryly, “You can’t make this shit up.”

Exclusive Broadway Shocker: New “West Side Story” with Avant Garde Choreographer Adds Tony Winner Sergio Trujillo as “Consultant”

0

EXCLUSIVE:

The new “West Side Story” is supposed to start previews tomorrow.

I’m told that the avant garde choreographer hired for the production– Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker — who threw out Jerome Robbins’ classic choreography– is getting a more conventional consultant.

Tony winner Sergio Trujillo has been brought in to help out. UPDATE: Although the show maintains de Keersmacker isn’t leaving, I’m told that most of what she’s done will be replaced by Trujillo restoring Jerome Robbins’ original award winning classic dances. This show has an extraordinarily long preview schedule– two months– which should give the producers ample time to right their ship.

Director Ivo van Hove has obviously been overruled by producers Scott Rudin, Barry Diller, and David Geffen. That trio has enough experience to know when something ain’t working. And this obviously made no sense.

I told you last week that de Keersmacker and van Hove had taken the song “I Feel Pretty” out of the show, and removed the big ballet number that goes with the show’s hit song, “Somewhere.” Sources say the song and the ballet are back. But the show’s official position is “that woll never happen.” We’ll see.

Screwing around with “West Side Story” is like graffiti painting over the Mona Lisa. The show is considered perfection in musical theater. With Steven Spielberg’s updated but still very classic version coming to film screens a year from now, the estates of Robbins and Leonard Bernstein, as well as the very much alive Stephen Sondheim, couldn’t afford to see their masterpiece damaged.

And this should help the advance ticket sales, which to be honest, lacked buzz. There are plenty of seats available on discount for January and February.

ONE MORE THING Sounds like a tense situation at the Broadway Theater. “We’re all under NDA’s,” says a source. So please, feel free to email me confidentially with updates. showbiz411@gmail.com

Today Show Ignores Golden Globes: NBC in Strange Position as Golden Globes Ignore Broadcast Networks, Snub Corporate Cousin Universal Pictures

0

What a weird morning on NBC’s Today Show.

The Golden Globes are on NBC and yet the Today show this morning pretty much ignored the nominations announcement.

Usually when nominations are announced for an awards show, the host network’s morning show makes a big deal of the moment. There are interviews with stars. analysis from reporters, etc. But on Today this morning, nada.

Not only that, the announcements were pushed up by a half hour to the ungodly time of 8:15am. This all takes place normally beginning at 8:30am.

Could NBC have known what was going to happen? The Globes didn’t give a single nomination to any broadcast network, including NBC. They also largely snubbed all of Universal’s films including “Ford v Ferrari” and most especially the very expensive “Cats.” NBC pays the Globes around $10 million a year to license the awards.

Now NBC Universal is in the strange position of promoting an awards show that has almost no connection to them or to their programs or movies. And this, with the ratings for all awards shows on the decline. It sure looks like the Globes will get scant attention from NBC other than promos with Ricky Gervais. Talk about stranger things!

Golden Globes: “Cats,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “Little Women,” Mr. Rogers Movie, Important Civil Rights Story All Ignored

0

The Hollywood Foreign Press dealt some blows to several movies this morning.

The biggest disaster is “Cats,” from Universal Pictures. With an all star cast and huge budget, “Cats” would have been the toast of the Globes in past years. The HFPA screened it and gave it one nod, for the new song by Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Otherwise, “Cats” didn’t make Best Comedy/Musical even though it was technically the only musical of the year. This movie will now have to survive on its following among the zillion people who saw it live on stage. Most of those were Japanese tourists, however.

Universal’s “Ford v Ferrari” was also ignored except for Christian Bale’s performance. Luckily the film is already a $100 million hit. But a few noms wou;d have been nice.

Warner Bros. struck out with Clint Eastwood’s excellent “Richard Jewell,” and the important civil rights movie, “Just Mercy.” One nod for the former, nothing for the latter.

Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” and Marielle Heller’s “Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” each from Sony Columbia, struck out too. Only Tom Hanks made it in from the latter. “Little Women” has a Best Actress nod and nothing else. Very surprising and wrong.

“Bombshell” about Roger Ailes and Fox News got nothing except a nod for Charlize Theron. It’s out of the game.

2020 Golden Globe Nominations: Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell,” “Little Women,” “Bombshell,” “Cats,” All Snubbed, “Irishman” Sweeps, “Parasite” Stays in Foreign

0

We’re live updating the 2020 Golden Globe nominations begin at 8amET/5amPT. Keep refreshing…

So far, the Globes have included “The Farewell” as a foreign language film. At the Oscars it didn’t qualify because it was produced by Americans. The other big news is that three of the five screenplay nominations are from Netflix. Wow. And they all deserve it.

Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell” was snubbed except in Best Supporting Actress, for Kathy Bates.

“The Irishman” swept all its categories including Best Picture, Director, 2 supporting  actors, screenplay.

Netflix got the lion’s share of nominations. Three of the top 5 movies are from their studio. They are “Marriage Story,” “Two Popes,” and “The Irishman.” The other two are “1917” and “Joker.” Those are the top 5 movies for the Oscars, I think.

Congrats to Annette Bening for picking up a Best Supporting Actress nomination for “The Report.”

No “Little Women” except for Saoirse Ronan, no directing or supporting nominations. Quite stunning. Also, Warner’s “Just Mercy” totally left out.

And no “Cats.” The HFPA saw “Cats.” Only Taylor Swift’s song survived.
