(Picture) Justin Bieber — All Grown Up — Proves He Can Grow a Beard (Sort of)

0

Justin Bieber has proven he can grow a beard.

Never hirsute in the past, young Justin has raised a scratchy growth on his face.

He posted pictures to Instagram, all with big smiles.

Maybe he’s on vacation from being on vacation. At least he’s happy.

Bieber hasn’t releaseda new album in three years. He also hasnt toured since canceling his lsdt tour because he had a form of Bells Palsy. Bieber also broke up with manager Scooter Braun.

But he does have a beard.

Two weeks ago, Justin posted a video with music by Mitski. Good song, sounds like John Lennon circa 1973

Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop Tarts Movie Drops on Netflix in 6 Days But No One’s Seen It Except Friends and Family

0

“Unfrosted” is Jerry Seinfeld’s movie about the creation of the Pop Tart.

So far the comedy has gotten a ton of publicity. It drops on Netflix in just six days. But no one has seen it.

Seinfeld held a private screening this week for family and close friends. Co-star Christian Slater was there, and so was Matthew Broderick. Jessica Seinfeld posted pictures of a jolly time on Instagram.

But aside from those guests a few journalists doing interviews, “Unfrosted” is unseen.

Press links are going out on Monday, although it’s unclear when reviews can be published. The movie drops on Thursday night after midnight. Will it be a tasty snack? We don’t know.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with Jerry making the rounds on talk shows and so on. He’s always funny. But whether “Unfrosted” turns out to be a deft satire or just a vanity project about an extremely not nutritional breakfast replacement remains unknown

Box Office: “Challengers” Not Making Expected Racquet With $4 Mil Friday As Audiences Ambivalent

0

Where are all the Zendaya fans?

Where is the younger generation of movie goers who were supposed to be into fluid relationships?

Where are the tennis fans?

“Challengers” is the biggest film project shot in and about New Rochelle, New York since “The Dick van Dyke Show.” But audiences seem ambivalent.

“Challengers” made $4 million last night, after taking in $1.9 million on Thursday in previews. That equals a $6 million opening and a $14 million opening weekend.

Luca Guadagnino’s rom-drama cost $55 million! The Cinemascore is B+ and the Rotten Tomatoes audience score is just 75%, which equals a C. This is not the grand slam that was predicted for this sex filled, hang wringer.

Publicity has suggested a little three way action between Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist’s characters. But once audiences got into theaters they might have been a little surprised about the relationship between the male characters. They have a major make out scene, not to mention a final scene that suggests they’re the ones who get together in the end.

Maybe audiences aren’t as 21st century as we thought. Young people liked conventional rom com “Anyone But You.” They’re going to love “Hit Man.”

Meantime, kudos to Variety’s Steve Gaydos who had a good alternative title for “Challengers” on Twitter: “Jules and Gym.”

RIP Marla Adams, Longtime Soap Star of “The Young and the Restless,” Dies at 85

0

Actress Marla Adams, whose career stretched from the 1960s to a recent return to “The Young and the Restless,” has died at age 85.

Starting in 1982, Adams played Dina Mergeron the delinquent mother and ex wife in the Abbott family on “Y&R.” She was a viper. She had many runs on the show but in 2016 she returned as Dina, with Alzheimer’s, and gave such a deep performance that she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 2018 and won the award for Supporting Actress in A Drama in 2021.

The Y&R Instagram says: “On behalf of the entire company of The Young and the Restless, we send our deepest sympathies to Marla’s family after her passing. We’re so grateful and in awe of Marla’s incredible performance as Dina Mergeron as both Marla and Dina made an unforgettable mark on Y&R.”

Adams made her Broadway debut in 1958 and continued on to a long resume in theater. She became a TV veteran, appearing in other soaps over the years and almost all the prime time shows in the 60s and 70s. She was so popular on CBS that when she wasn’t on “Y&R,” she did five years on a soap called “Capitol” and another year on “The Bold and the Beautiful.”

What a great career! Marla Adams will be missed.

Taylor Swift Sets Records: Sells 2.6 Mil Copies of “Poets,” Takes Top 14 Streaming Spots (31 All Together)

It’s a day for setting records for Taylor Swift.

Her album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” sold 2.6 million copies. Of those, 1.9 million were CDs, LPs, and paid downloads.

She lodged third place of all albums since 1990 for an opening week.

Swift also posted 31 tracks of the top 50 streaming songs. She has the whole top 14, and then 17 more on the chart.

On the album chart, she has six more slots after “Poets.”

The number 2 album sold around 69,000 copies. That’s the gap. Beyonce is number 3.

Nothing approaches the magnitude of Swift’s achievement. And “Poets” remains at number 1 today after 8 days. The fans have not given up. Released today is a new album by the Pet Shop Boys. Stars from the 1980s, Pet Shop Boys album is number 3. They got a lot of publicity after slagging Swift for not writing memorable songs. I guess some of them must be, right?

“Poets” is a money making machine, that’s for sure.

Report: Google’s March Core Update to Algo Finished After 52 Days, More Destruction Coming to Website Owners

0

I never write about this stuff, but it’s time to drag it into the open.

All of the traffic on the internet is run by Google. In turn, ad revenue comes from that traffic. Every month Google updates its algorithms. Last September the update nearly destroyed web traffic for sites big and small.

Dealing with Google to “distribute” a website is like putting your magazine at a newsstand, and then seeing the stand burned down by the owner the next day.

Today, the Google “March core update” finally ended after 52 days. A new update is coming May 5th. According to the Search Engine Optimization experts — the good ones, not the bottom feeders — no site has recovered its traffic from last September. The changes made on March 5th are just as destructive.

There is no federal oversight of the web or of Google. You can’t reach anyone who works at the company, either. They hide in the shadows. So we depend on these SEO experts– I read Barry Schwartz, Glenn Gabe, and a few others — who are in touch with people at Google. Those people either don’t have answers or don’t tell the truth.

For a lay person, to read this stuff is absolutely Kafkaesque. It’s all doublespeak, a corporate language that makes no sense. There are plenty of dance lessons on line for website owners, lots of so called Life Insurance policies. Almost everything suggested is immediately contradicted or a total fraud.

Google is a nightmare. I wish the FTC or Congress would get involved. They seem confused, too, however. No one knows how the internet works in the first place. Are there little people behind the screens? Are there people in a room somewhere turning knobs? Who the f knows?

Barry Schwartz runs a website called SearchEngineLand.com. He tries to make sense of all this, although you might as well be in the middle of “Catch 22.” He just posted a story that everyone should read. The link is here. It’s called “How Prabhakar Raghavan Killed Google Search.” I don’t who that is, but maybe the FTC or Congress should look into it.

When I ran magazines and wrote for newspapers we had no idea how many people read our stories. You could sort of tell from circulation figures. But you really had to see someone on the subway looking at your article — it was always a thrill. The internet has made it almost impossible to deliver real news and actual articles, and “monetize” them. But we keep trying. Don’t give up!

As a PS — allow me to vent for a minute — a company called Smart News, which aggregates stories from various websites, stopped carrying Showbiz411 last fall. They used to include it, but when the Hollywood strikes were on, I started reporting more on Donald Trump’s social media. I guess Smart News didn’t like my criticism of him. They don’t mind publishing fake news in entertainment, but Trump scared them. David Pedersen runs that company, but it’s impossible to get to him, just like every other tech company.

UPDATE CBS Cancels “NCIS: Hawai’i” After Three Seasons: Did LL Cool J Cost Too Much? Was It the Female Lead?

0

CBS has cancelled “NCIS: Hawai’i”? Was it the apostrophe? Was it LL Cool J’s salary? Did focus groups not like Vanessa Lachey as a female leader of the NCIS?

Alas, it’s gone, leaving just regular “NCIS” and the one based in Sydney, Australia, both of which are coming back. Last year “NCIS Los Angeles” ended its run after the New Orleans branch shut down, too.

This is what I wrote earlier: t all comes down to money. CBS added LLCool J, who was the co-star of “NCIS: LA” to the Hawaii show this season for a few episodes. But “Hawai’i” already has stars in Jason Antoon and Vanessa Lachey. Would paying CBS’s favorite rapping actor tip over the budget? May be!

CBS just renewed “The Equalizer” with Queen Latifah after a long negotiation. These shows are all hits, given the declining number of viewers overall on TV. The Tiffany network has already cancelled the popular “So Help Me, Todd.” Considering the whole “NCIS” universe, you’d think they’d want “Hawai’i” back, too, just for the extra apostrophe.

Me? I’m waiting for “NCIS Hartford.”

“Parks and Rec,” “Severance” Star Adam Scott Will Direct First Feature, with Sterling K. Brown, Zazie Beetz

0

You know Adam Scott from “Parks and Recreation,” “Severance,” and dozens of other smart movies and TV shows.

Now he’s going to direct his first feature. “Double Booked” will be a thriller starring Sterling K. Brown, Zazie Beetz, and Alexandra D’Addario.

Protagonist Pictures is taking it to Cannes to the market, my favorite place. That’s where they’ll raise money and find international distribution. The market has zero charm. It’s located under the casino near the marina and has Soviet touches in the architecture. Once you’re inside, the convention atmosphere is broken up by people from all over the world selling movies you or may not see in the future. It’s a lot of fun!

Storyline:

“Double Booked” follows a successful self-help writer (Scott) and his heavily pregnant wife (Beetz) who organize a weekend away at a secluded lodge, only to encounter another couple (Brown and Daddario) at their cabin when they arrive. With a blizzard moving in they are forced to spend the night together, and what seems like an innocent system error turns into a chilling battle of deceit with deadly consequences.

Good luck to them all, and enjoy the Marche! It’s a kick!

Box Office: “Challengers” Gets the Ball Just Over the Net with Zendaya’s Plot-Challenged Sexy Tennis Mis-Match

0

“Challengers” proved a little challenging last night at the box office.

The Zendaya tennis menage a trois made $1.9 million last night in previews, including earlier screenings. It’s good but not great and points to maybe an ambivalent audience response.

This rom-dram co-stars Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist best guy friends who are maybe a little gay-ish. They fall in love with Zendaya on the tennis court. There’s a lot of sex, sex, sex. I thought the young demo audience would rush to see it.

“Challengers” should be promoted for the sex and the young people, and to Zendaya’s audience. The stars have done a ton of press. There may have been a New York premiere.

Look for a $14 million opening weekend unless word of mouth is great and “Challengers” takes off like a soaring tennis ball over the weekend. One reason it might not — and I saw this on Twitter reports over night — the time line of the film is very hard to follow. Every other scene has a card that reads “Ten Years Earlier,” “Fifteen Years Earlier,” “Three Days from Now.” It’s worse than “Lost’!

American Idol: Samantha Diaz aka Just Sam Returns to Show Sunday Four Years After Winning

0

Samantha Diaz is returning to “American Idol” this Sunday.

Diaz, aka Just Sam, won the content four years ago, in 2020. She arrived there as New York subway performer, or busker.

After she won, her career did not take off. Diaz returned to the subway platform, where she’s been ever since.

Her 2020 win coincided with the beginning of COVID. She admitted in a later interview “no one wanted to work in a studio.”

“Back in 2021, I was super embarrassed to be going back to the trains. I didn’t want people to know that I legit needed the money & I didn’t want people to know that it wasn’t optional,” Diaz wrote, in a since-deleted post. “I was disappointed in myself for allowing myself to fall so low after winning Idol, but then I had to take it easy on me and remember that I started my journey with Idol at 20 years old. Not even knowing anything about Hollywood or the music industry.”

Two days ago, Diaz — who has a phenomenal voice and deserves a real music career — posted this message to Instagram:
