“Grey’s Anatomy” — Totally Unwatchable Now — Pushed to 10PM For Probably Final Season

0

It’s time to suture up the folks to at Grey Sloan whatever.

ABC has renewed “Grey’s Anatomy” for a 21st and hopefully final season. They’re shoving it to 10pm, an hour later on Thursdays, when most of its viewers will have decamped.

Tonight’s episode is completely unwatchable anyway. I flipped over from “SVU” to see what was going on. Ellen Pompeo is just not there. The new characters and stories are as compelling as old milk. When a show is over, it’s over. This one has outlasted its warranty by six or seven years.

“Greys” has a great run and made a lot of people rich. But really, call the code now and admit that next year is just a victory lap, ABC.

Replacing “Greys” at 9pm is yet another new medical show, this one from Ryan Murphy and starring Pacey from “Dawson’s Creek,” Joshua Jackson. It looks like it’s set on cruise liner. Same medical conditions, new setting. And that’s the way it’s been since “Dr. Kildare” and “Ben Casey.”

ABC Soap “General Hospital” Fires Headwriter of Two Months, Brings Back Predecessor

0

ABC’s 60 year old soap, “General Hospital,” is always in some kind of trouble.

Today the show fired co-headwriter Patrick Mulcahey. He’d been on the job for two months, with Elizabeth Korte. In that time, the show dropped precipitously in the ratings, falling below the 2 million mark in viewers.

Mulcahey managed to destroy characters’ pre-existing relationships with each other to the point where everyone was arguing with each other onscreen. I guess he thought friction would be dramatic, but it was just annoying.

The old writer, Chris van Etten, will succeed Mulcahey and rapidly fix all the chaos. Soap fans don’t want characters shouting at each other and saying nasty things about them. You can have fun, but it has to be within parameters. All TV shows work only if the characters like each other — even villains.

This poor show. I’m told they have one young actress who’s doing 90 days in jail for a big DUI. Two of the older actors are missing entirely. One other actor is returning after cancer treatment. It sounds like a soap opera!

Cannes: Megaflopolis? Early Reaction to Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis”: “Disaster,” “A mess,” “Craziest thing I’ve ever seen”

Cannes: the critics are reporting from the premiere of “Magalopolis” and the word is not good.

We were warned that Francis Ford Coppola’s $130 million movie would be an operatic failure. But early reviews include: “Disaster,” “A mess,” “Craziest thing I’ve ever seen.”

Reviewers admire the look of the film but have no idea what it’s about. Again, this is not a surprise.

How about this? “MEGALOPOLIS is truly insufferable on so many levels. You can tell that this has been forty years in the making and not in a good way by any means. Far past its sell by date right out of the gate. Aubrey Plaza is unsurprisingly the only redeeming quality”

Or: “More like MegaBonkerslis!! Can a film be simultaneous brilliant & a huge mess at the same time? Coppola certainly tries! And boy does he have a LOT to say. Packs in every single thought he has about America (aka New Rome) and its downfall into 2+ hours.”

Screen Daily:” It pains me to say that Francis Ford Coppola’s MEGALOPOLIS is a disaster.”

Rolling Stone: “So long as there are people who love movies that are actually about things, and think about the past 6000 years of human civilization, there is an audience for this.”

Variety: “To call this garish, idea-bloated monstrosity a mere “fable” is to grossly undersell the project’s expansive insights into art, life and legacy.

This isn’t funny. Coppola has put everything into this film. It could be a hit years from now when the passions have settled. But for now it’s a big miss. And the problem is that Coppola has literally bet the farm on this project. He’s got no distributor. I do think Paramount should take it on as the studio has lived on “The Godfather” movies for 50 years.

Vulture: “There is nothing in Megalopolis that feels like something out of a “normal” movie. It has its own logic and cadence and vernacular. The characters speak in archaic phrases and words, mixing shards of Shakespeare, Ovid, and at one point straight-up Latin. Some characters speak in rhyme, others just in high-minded prose that feels like maybe it should be in verse. At one point, Adam Driver does the entire “To be or not to be” soliloquy from Hamlet .Why? I’m not exactly sure. But it sure sounds good.”

Billie Eilish Debuts “Lunch” at Listening Party. You Probably Won’t Be Hearing it On the Radio (Or in the Supermarket)

(WITH UPDATES) Billie Eilish is only 22, but she’s never shied away from making cutting edge music.

On Wednesday night she debuted her new album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” at Brooklyn’s Barclay Center. Young women packed the arena, but what they got was lyrics of the new generation.

HEAR THE WHOLE ALBUM ON SHOWBIZ411.COM

Goodbye, Taylor Swift songs about breaking up with boys. It’s a new world now.

“I could eat that girl for lunch/Yeah, she dances on my tongue/Tastes like she might be the one/And I can never get enough/I could buy her so much stuff/It’ a craving, not a crush. Yeah.

I don’t think we’ll be hearing that on top 40 radio or in the carpool with the station turned up. But who knows?

Billie said there would be no singles from the album, and now I think we know why.

In the Barclay Center, the electronic music pounded. Eilish is singing strongly, not her usual whisper. She’s loud and proud. It’s 2024.

How will these new songs be received? As Billie sings in “Skinny”:

the internet is hungry for the mеat
It’s kinda funny that somebody’s gotta feed it

Billie Eilish is serving a banquet.

Here’s the song:

Barbra Streisand’s Next Duets Album Will Feature Superstars Paul McCartney, Sting, Other A Listers: Elton? Adele? Ariana?

0

EXCLUSIVE (REALLY)

Barbra Streisand just released a new a beautiful new single called “Love Will Survive,” for the closing credits of the upcoming series “The Tattooist of Auschwitz.” It’s maybe Streisand’s best new vocal in years thanks to producers Walter Afanasieff (Mariah Carey’s classics) and Peter Asher (Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor classics).

So now I’m told Streisand has booked the producing duo for her next album of duets. Barbra has a couple of these under her belt over her six decade career. But this one sounds like a powerhouse.

Her big gets? (Or theirs, since who doesn’t want to sing with Barbra?) I’m told it’s superstars only: Paul McCartney is said to be, and so is Sting according to sources. Those are certainly as major as you can get. Which songs will they perform? Probably their own. For McCartney, how about “Michelle”? Sting would sound amazing on “Fragile” with Barbra. But who knows?

I

I’ve gleaned that talks are going on with Adele, Miley Cyrus, and Ariana Grande, too. I’d love to hear her with Jennifer Hudson. How about “The Way We Were” with Gladys Knight? They each had hits with the Marvin Hamlisch song. Of course, Josh Groban or Michael Buble would be on the list but she’s worked with them before. Elton John? Bob Dylan? Smokey Robinson?

Will we get some rock songs? Fifty years ago Barbra had a major hit with “Stoney End,” produced by Richard Perry and written by Laura Nyro. I’ll bet she can do it again.

So stay tuned. I don’t think this collection can make it out in time for the 2025 Grammys. But 2026 isn’t so far away!

Happy News: Naomi Watts, Billy Crudup Invite Celebrity Guests to Mexico for 1st Anniversary Wedding Party

0

EXCLUSIVE
Heard on the Rialto, as they used to say:

One year after their city hall wedding, stars Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup are having a party.

I’m told that Naomi and Billy have invited 130 friends to a Mexican weekend get away for June 4th-5th. The great acting couple will renew their vows, and say them for the first tie front of friends and family.

Who’ll be there? Mark Ruffalo and wife Sunrise were there the first time, at city hall, so they will likely be present. So, too, should Nicole Kidman, Naomi’s old friend, and her husband, Keith Urban. Will Keith perform?

Some other guests could include Billy’s costars like Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

The amount of talent in the room will be stunning, starting with the wedding couple. Crudup has a Tony and an Emmy. He’s featured in “The Morning Show” and is on tour with his excellent one man play, “Harry Clarke.”

Naomi has two Oscar nominations and a resume of top notch movies and TV shows including “Mulholland Drive,” “The Impossible,” “Vice,” “The Loudest Voice in the Room,” and “Twin Peaks Season 3.”

It’s actually amazing they even had time to pull this off!

Adam Driver — No Hits in Five Years — Has As Much to Lose as Director in Francis Ford Coppola’s Daring “Megalopolis”

0

Everyone’s talking about Thursday’s premiere in Cannes of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis.” FFC invested $100 million of his own money into this spectacular. Few have seen it. Coppola is bringing it to Cannes without a distributor, and in competition.

Surely, it will get a headline making 10 minute standing ovation. That will be the story.

But Coppola isn’t the only one who has his career on the line. So does star Adam Driver.

Everyone loves Adam Driver, and he’s had an amazing run. But in reality, Driver has not starred in a hit film since 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.” If it weren’t for his “Star Wars” movies, playing Kylo Ren, Driver’s box office report card isn’t so good.

To wit: “Ferrari” was a total bust. “House of Gucci” was a minor one. “Annette” was barely a movie. No one saw “The Last Duel” or “65.” This is from hard numbers, objectively. Driver works a lot — and is always outstanding — but the material has often undermined his talents.

Driver did his best acting in Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” which was for streaming only. He was just as good in “White Noise,” but it also didn’t play in theaters. They can’t count on his box office report.

So there’s a little pressure for Driver that “Megalopolis” become a success tomorrow night. It’s not like he’ll never work again, but his trajectory just gets more challenged. Let’s hope for the best.

Kate Hudson Wakes Up 23 Years after Oscar Nom for “Almost Famous,” Comes for an Emmy and a Grammy at the Same Time

0

In 2001, Kate Hudson got an Oscar nomination for playing Penny Lane in “Almost Famous.”

Then, instead of having a clear career path, she zigged and zagged. She also had three children. She had a successful business, too.

But now, a quarter of a century later, she’s back!

Kate is releasing an album — which sounds pretty good — and is starring in a Netflix series. She could be up for an Emmy and a Grammy in 2025. Good for her!

The series sounds like “Ted Lasso” combined with a few other things. But Hudson will be perfect as the star of “Running Point,” created by Mindy Kaling. The cast is interesting, as it includes Chet Hanks, the son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, plus Max Greenfield and Drew Tarver, as well as Brenda Song.

The story: “When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson) is appointed President of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job, especially in the unpredictable, male-dominated world of sports.”

Meanwhile, tomorrow night Hudson releases her long awaited first album.

The album is called “Glorious.” Kate is 45, and I think if she wants she can follow the path of Rita Wilson for a post-teen career. Her songs are solid and catchy, the arrangements are perfect for the adult contemporary audience– like me!

Three of the songs are already streaming, and they sound great. She says Linda Ronstadt is her favorite singer and you can tell from these tracks. Hudson is a big, open voice but with a lot of personality. She can actually sing, no trickery. Watch her video from Howard Stern when she sang Aimee Mann’s “Voices Carry.” Love it!

Billie Eilish Books Colbert for Next Week, Posts Snippet of Electronic Sounding “Open the Door” from New Album Coming Tomorrow Night

0

UPDATED: Billie will appear on next Tuesday’s Stephen Colbert Late Night show. She taped two songs last night in front of his audience including “Lunch” and “The Greatest.” The audience didn’t know she was going to perform until she started. Pretty cool.

EARLIER:
Billie Eilish has found tikTok. She’s posted a song called “Open the Door” from her new album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” which will arrive tomorrow night at midnight.

Eilish and brother Finneas will hold listening sessions live tomorrow night in New York and Friday in Los Angeles. They’ll be beamed to AMC Theaters.

Expect “Hit Me” to knock Taylor Swift off her perch at number 1. But that’s ok. Swift has sold 3.5 million copies of “The Tortured Poets Department,” plus she’s made several billion from her tour.
