“Spider Man: No Way Home” Will Clear $300 Mil in the US Today After Huge $37 Mil Monday

0

Just in case you were worried about Sony, Columbia Pictures or Marvel:

“Spider Man: No Way Home” made a whopping $37 million on Monday, just a 42% fall off from Sunday.

The triple action adventure will cross the $300 million this afternoon and blaze a trail toward $400 million this week and more records to be broken. This is despite a raging pandemic and Omicron. Sony has also picked up $212 million with “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” and over $100 million with “Ghostbusters.”

In an effort to have one film with no special effects, Sony is secretly releasing “A Journal for Jordan” this week directed by Denzel Washington and starring Michael B. Jordan. They’ve had almost no screenings. It’s unclear if this film will have a post-credits scene or action figures in the stores.

Sunday Ratings: “Yellowstone,” Spin Off Score 14 Mil Viewers, “SATC” Surprise Showings Fail to Register

0

Sunday’s cable ratings were stunning as usual for the Paramount Network, less thrilling for HBO.

“Yellowstone” on Paramount continued steady at the rate of 7.8 million viewers just on the main channel. Another 726K picked it up on the Country Music Television channel. They’ve really tapped that vein of the market.

But now “Yellowstone” has a companion show, “1883.” (Will it just be set in 1883 or will they have to change the title every year?) The new show scored 5 million viewers on the main channel following “Yellowstone” and then another 700K on CMT.

So that’s where the eyes were on Sunday.  They were not on HBO, that’s for sure. For the first week in 10 without “Succession,” the cabler had an odd night. From 8:30 to 10pm they surprise-showed their HBO Max only series “And Just Like That” from “Sex and the City.” In the prior week, HBO had shown the Coen Brothers movie “No Country for Old Men” in that spot and picked up 196K viewers. But the “SATC” shows didn’t even register in the top 150 programs of the night.

Later, at 10:30, “Curb Your Enthusiasm” ratings fell a bit under 400K, but the episode was comedy magic with Bill Hader playing three roles (and a fourth off screen). I don’t know what happened with Hader’s own show, “Barry,” but he’ll get a guest star Emmy Award for this one.

“Sex and the City” Stars Deal Chris Noth a Blow, Support the Women Who Made Accusations

0

The women from “Sex and the City” have posted this statement to their Instagram accounts. They have dealt Chris Noth a fatal blow supporting the women who’ve lodged accusations against Noth, their castmate for 20 years.

My next question is about the order of this signature. It’s not alphabetical. Or how the credits roll. At this hour, 10:10pm, it’s on Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis’s Insta accounts but not on Sarah Jessica Parker’s. I don’t know what that means. It could just be procrastination on SJP’s part. Let’s give it some time.

Ratings: “Saturday Night Live” Without Cast or Music Scored the Same as Billie Eilish, Simu Liu Episodes

0

Did it matter that “Saturday Night Live” had no cast, audience, or musical guest on Saturday night?

Apparently not.

Put together on the fly because of COVID, “SNL” scored 3.7 million viewers in overnight ratings on Saturday, the same as it got on the previous two Saturdays with Billie Eilish and Simu Liu.

Paul Rudd was the nominal host. Tom Hanks and Tina Fey helped out. Only Michael Che and Kenan Thompson came into the studio. Charlie XCX, the musical guest, did not perform.

There were taped clips and clips from the past. Steve Martin participated but only by Zoom.

I know it was a yeoman effort so NBC could sell ads, but it was a depressing episode.

Still, 3.7 million watched in real time. The final numbers could be a little higher. The 18-49 demo was 1.5 million, slightly higher than the week before.

The show was a lot cheaper to produce than usual. With only two cast members, a guest host, and two guests, “SNL” scored the same number as it got with superstars, an audience, and so on. Maybe this is the future!

Anyway, it’s over, What’s done is done. Looking forward to new episodes in 2022.

Ironic: COVID Kills Off Alanis Morissette Broadway Musical “Jagged Little Pill,” Ends Run Because of Virus

0

It’s ironic, as Alanis Morissette once sang.

The pop star’s Broadway musical, “Jagged Little Pill,” is dead thanks to COVID. The show’s producers say the virus has killed their show. “JLP” has played its last performance.

Here’s the statement from producers Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David and Eva Price:

We are so proud of this extraordinary show, and this extraordinary company, who every night in difficult circumstances, have told the Jagged Little Pill story. This show about healing, human connection, and catharsis, has been a salve to audiences, and to all of us, throughout these trying times.

Yet, the drastic turn of events this week with the rapid spread of the Omicron variant has, once again, changed everything. We are dismayed by what appears to be another substantial public health crisis, and – due to the detection of multiple positive Covid-19 cases within the company – need to prioritize the health and safety of the cast, crew, and entire team working on Jagged Little Pill. In light of the extreme uncertainty ahead of us this winter, and forced to choose between continuing performances and protecting our company, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our doors.

We know that the Jagged Little Pill story will continue to be told – and in the new year, will be announcing plans for subsequent productions, building on the show’s triumphant launch in Australia earlier this month. We also hope and intend to find a way to bring this vibrant and vitalizing musical back to the Broadway stage, once the current crisis is past, but at this time we are in the unfortunate position to determine Friday, December 17, 2021 as the final Broadway performance of Jagged Little Pill.

There is nothing in the world like live theater. There is no community in the world like this great Broadway family of artists and audiences. We will make it through this, together.

Chris Noth Finished Off, Fired from “The Equalizer,” Loses $12 Mil Business Deal, Dead on “SATC,” Now What?

0

So cancel culture has killed off Chris Noth completely now.

Accused by three women of sexual assault by three women– including rape allegations– has been wiped off the face of show business. Universal Television has fired him from “The Equalizer” TV series. He’s already dead on “Sex and the City.”

Additionally, he lost a $12 million endorsement deal for a tequila. Peloton killed his commercials filmed before the news broke of the allegations from two women. And then the third and fourth.

There are no police filings, no trial, nothing. The women are presumed correct in their claims. And just like that, Noth’s life is in smithereens. His professional life is totally laid waste. There’s nothing left of it. His guilt has been decided.

And no one from “Sex and the City” or “Law & Order” has spoken up for him. That’s what makes it even worse, No one has disputed the charges or stood up for his character except for one anonymous quote that didn’t help at all. So far, no one has stood up for Noth starting with his employer, Dick Wolf, for nearly 30 years.

Noth will appear in the January 2nd episode of “The Equalizer” and then disappear into TV history.

Only in New York: 2022 Theater Season Will Pit Michael Jackson Musical vs. Michael R. Jackson Musical

0

Michael Jackson vs. Michael Jackson.

This could only happen in New York, on Broadway, and during a tough year.

There will be not one but two Michael Jackson musicals opening in the 2022 theater season.

The first one, “MJ: The Michael Jackson Musical,” has already begun previews. It’s on pause right now until December 27th and has an opening date of February 6, 2022. This is the musical about the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, during his zenith with “Thriller,” “Bad,” and “Dangerous.”

The second one, “A Strange Loop,” is written– book, lyrics, and music- – by  someone called Michael R. Jackson.  The description: “Meet Usher: a Black, queer writer writing a musical about a Black, queer writer writing a musical about a Black, queer writer…  ”

So it’s a Michael Jackson musical about Usher? Not ‘the Usher’ as in singer Usher Raymond. Someone named Usher. Got that?

“A Strange Loop” won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It also won five Drama Desk Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, six Outer Critics Circle honors, two Obie awards, one Off-Broadway Alliance Award, and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. But it’s never played on Broadway. It will open sometime this spring at the Lyceum Theater now that “Macbeth” with Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga has moved to the Longacre.

Just imagine if some fan mistakes one of these musicals for the other. They will be getting quite a surprise when the curtain goes up!

Alicia Keys New Album “Keys” Fails to Sell 17,000 Copies, Misses Making Top 50

0

We kind of knew the Alicia Keys album, “Keys,” was a disaster waiting to happen, and now it’s happened.

Alicia’s “Keys” unlocked nothing. According to hitsdailydouble.com, “Keys” sold fewer than 17.000 copies in its debut and failed to make the top 50.

Another source, Chart Data, says “Keys” sold 20,000 copies and missed their top 40. Either way. it’s a disaster.

Even the singer-songwriter’s last album, “Alicia.” sold 62,000 copies in its first week. But most of those were CDs. And guess what? “Keys” had no CDs. They didn’t make any.

All of this raises a lot of questions. Alicia is signed to RCA but no one at the label would respond to emails last week when the album came out. It seems as if they’ve disowned her. And not manufacturing CDs indicates possibly that Keys went rogue on this release, a year after a “Alicia.”

As with “Alicia,” and the prior album, Keys had no singles for the label to promote. It’s not like “Keys” isn’t a solid R&B album. It is. But when Alicia recorded for Clive Davis (and now, subsequently, Peter Edge, who’s been with her at RCA/J for two decades) the album would not have been released without an obvious hit. Alicia’s last actual hit was “Girl on Fire,” a decade ago.

This is what happens when legacy artists like Keys become wealthy and insulated from reality.  The “Keys” album will be a souvenir for very select fans, and we move on.

It’s too bad. There were a couple of tracks on there I thought had potential. Here they are:

Legendary Singer Frankie Valli Says Still Recovering from Pneumonia, Putting Off Return to Live Shows

0

Frankie Valli, god bless him, wants to get back out on tour. He’s 87! But Valli, the beloved leader of the Four Seasons, has been battling pneumonia and its after effects since October. At first he was tested for COVID, negative. Then it was thought he had the flu. Also negative. It turned out to be pneumonia.

Now Frankie says in an Instagram post he’s not 100 percent, and won’t tour in January as he promised.

Frankie, please take care of yourself. You owe us nothing. The world loves you! We will all stay home and listen to your records, watch the “Jersey Boys” with Nick Jonas whenever that arrives, and so on.

Frankie always Walks Like a Man!

PS Frankie should be very happy that Maneskin, the Italian rock band, has a new version of the Four Season’s “Beggin'” at the top of the charts. Everyone wants to hear the original now! (see below)

Valli writes on Instagram:

“Hello Everyone! I’m just writing to let you know I’m recovering nicely, but unfortunately the doctors want me to take another month off before I begin performing. So we are postponing our shows in January. I’m so looking forward to getting back on stage, but I can’t do that until I’m 100%.

“I want everybody who bought tickets to know that I’m sorry we won’t be able to do the shows right now…rest assured I can’t wait to get back on stage. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at a concert this year- Happy Holidays and a great New Year!”

Box Office UPDATE: “Spider Man” Swings to SECOND Biggest Weekend Ever After All Numbers Come In!

0

It’s a sweet update for Peter Parker and Pals.

“Spider Man: No Way Home” has revised numbers this morning, up from $253 million to $260 million in the US.

This makes the 8th Spider Man movie the second highest grossing debut weekend of all films, moving it up from 3rd place. “No Way Home” now usurps “Avengers Infinity War” on the all time list.

At this rate, “No Way Home” should cross the $300 million mark by mid week if not sooner.

Elsewhere in the world, “No Way Home” has brought in $340 million, bringing the entire box office to $600 million in less than a week. That’s the 2nd highest international debut as well!

PS I love that Tom Holland is saying in interviews that he wants to “take time off now to start a family.” This is a great negotiating tactic since Sony wants three more Spider Man movies over the next five-to-seven years. Holland is just 25, and unless he knows something we don’t, it should take him about an hour to start a family. I think his girlfriend, Zendaya, would be the one getting pregnant, although she’s just 25 and may want to do other things with her life.
