“Spider Man” Crossing $400 Mil Mark Today, “Matrix” Making Money Despite HBO Max Showings

0

It’s a holly jolly Christmas for Peter Parker, even if no one remembers him and his aunt is dead. “Spider Man: No Way It Won’t Happen” is crossing the $400 million mark even as you read this. That’s all in eight days. Cumulatively around the world Spidey has $800 mil in the bank and will reach $1 billion by the weekend.

So it’s hilarious that the principals have told the trades they’re planning an Oscar campaign for Best Picture. Apparently they’ve made so much money that they just want to spend it. Please, Sony, we’ll take those FYC ads. Maybe Andrew Garfield can score Best Supporting Actor for “No Way Home” and Best Lead Actor for “Tick Tick Boom.” Anyway, it’s not going to happen. But how many Maserati’s can you drive at once? Better to spend the money on a campaign.

Meanwhile, “Matrix Resurrections” has already made $10.5 million despite being available on HBO Max. That’s half of what “West Side Story” has taken in.

Keep refreshing…

Box Office: “West Side Story” Crosses $20 Mil, “Spider Man” Booms Away, “Nightmare Alley” Turns to Dust

0

Wednesday’s box office brought a sigh of relief for “West Side Story.” Steven Spielberg’s Oscar certain classic finally crossed $20 million. This should have been $100 mil after 13 days. Go figure. But the gorgeous film is hanging in there, and taking it slow. If you’re brave enough to go see “Spider Man,” then you can go see the best movie of the year.

“Spider Man” is chugging along, of course, hitting $356 million. The webslinger will arrive at $400 million on Christmas morning.

Elsewhere: “Nightmare Alley” has turned to dust. Just $273,000 last night, and those were mercy viewings. Searchlight has struck out four times this fall, with “French Dispatch,” “Antlers,” and “Tammy Faye.” No box office for any of them and just Jessica Chastain as a possible Best Actress nominee.

Both “Matrix Resurrections” and “The King’s Man” had decent previews last night with $8 mil and $2 mil respectively. “MR” is also on HBO Max, so we’ll see how that impacts theaters.

RIP Legendary Writer Joan Didion, 87, Author of Screenplays, Keenest Observer of the Scene

0

The great writer, journalist, novelist, observer of the scene, definer of the gestalt, Joan Didion has died at the age of 87. The cause given is Parkinson’s Disease but Joan had been frail for some time. The unimaginable losses of her husband, the writer John Gregory Dunne, and their adult daughter, Quintana Roo, resulted in her famed book, “The Year of Magical Thinking.” Even in her grief, Didion added an expression to the language.

She leaves her nephew, Griffin, and his family. Griffin is the actor and director son of Joan’s late brother in law Dominick Dunne. I had the honor of  knowing Dominick, John, and John in my lifetime, and they were three magnificently talented, ingratiating people who made life in literary New York and Los Angeles that much more rewarding. Rest in peace to all of them, and condolences to Griffin et al.

Joni Mitchell Debuts the First Ever Video for Her Famous Christmas Song, “River,” Following Kennedy Center Tribute

0

Last night Joni Mitchell was one of the five Kennedy Center honorees, wrapping up a year of celebrations for the beloved singer songwriter. This year has also been the 50th anniversary of her album, “Blue.” Last night Brandi Carlile sang “River,” Joni’s famous “it’s coming on Christmas” song” on the show.

This morning there’s a video for “River” for the first time ever. Director Matvey Rezanov and Shazka Studios use animated watercolor painting to capture the song’s lonesome mood while paying tribute to Mitchell’s prolific creativity as a painter. Well done! The video is in conjunction with two box sets from Rhino of Joni’s archived live performances, a must have collection.

Ellen Pompeo Begins Her Annual Insulting Public Contract Negotiations for Another “Grey’s Anatomy” Season

0

If it’s December, it’s time for Ellen Pompeo’s annual annoying– and insulting– “Grey’s Anatomy” contract negotiation.

Pompeo kicks it up every year around this time: either she’s leaving “Grey’s” or the show itself should end. She doesn’t care about all the people the show employs or the remaining fans who enjoy other characters.

Indeed, last year Pompeo’s Meredith spent the entire year in a COVID coma, entertaining dead friends at the beach while all the other medical personnel characters saved lives or cared for her. She lay in bed dreaming about more money and perks.

Now Pompeo is back at it. This week, promoting her line of over the counter generic drugs, Pompeo told an interviewer she was trying to convince Shondaland, the producer, and others that the show should end. (I don’t disagree with her, I can’t believe it lasted this long.)

But here’s an idea for Pompeo, Shondaland, and ABC: Let Meredith leave. Let her go somewhere else. They have plenty of characters. Bring back Patrick Dempsey as McDreamy’s twin brother. Bring back Katherine Heigl and Sandra Oh. Once Pompeo and her huge salary — reportedly $575,000 an episode — are gone, there will be plenty of money to spread around.

You know that the network and producers would like to get two more seasons out of “Grey’s” to make a neat 20. Right now they’re at 18. Pompeo is probably asking for $750k per show, which is ridiculous since the ratings are now consistently under 4 million viewers a week.

But really, this annual campaign is insulting to the audience, the fans, her co-workers, and to media who report it like it’s new every year. Let Pompeo go off to make faux Tylenol or whatever her company does. She’s never won an Emmy Award, and never had outside projects to prove her worth as an actress apart from playing Meredith Grey. Let’s give her the opportunity to spread her wings, and not bring up this subject every again.

PS I always liked Chandra Wilson’s Dr. Bailey. She’s still there. Change the name to Bailey’s Anatomy.

Is There Still Sex in the City? No, and Candace Bushnell Closes One Woman Show Thanks to COVID

0

Is there still Sex in the City?

The quick answer is No. Candace Bushnell, who wrote the New York Observer columns that formed the basis of the HBO hit, has COVID. She’s cancelled the rest of her run in a one woman show down at the Daryl Roth Theater.

Candace’s show, “Is There Still Sex in the City?” got positive reviews and good audiences before the ‘Cron came to town. But now it’s wrapped up for good like a lot of New York theater.

“Sex and the City” related projects and people are not faring well during this pandemic. The revived HBO show is a mess, people don’t like it, they killed off Chris Noth and then it turned out they really killed him off. Plus Willie Garson died while it was being filmed. And…they didn’t even bother using the trademark theme music.

And, of course, Kim Cattrall aka Samantha.

So all in all, not  good winter for “SATC.” Maybe it’s time for everyone to move on.

COVID Scuttles Critics Choice Awards After Taking Governors Awards and New York Film Critics

0

Now the Critics Choice Awards are scuttled because of COVID.  Here’s the announcement:

“After thoughtful consideration and candid conversations with our partners at The CW and TBS, we have collectively come to the conclusion that the prudent and responsible decision at this point is to postpone the 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards, originally slated for January 9, 2022.   We are in regular communication with LA County Public Health officials, and we are currently working diligently to find a new date during the upcoming awards season in which to host our annual gala in-person with everyone’s safety and health remaining our top priority.  We will be sharing additional   details with our friends and colleagues throughout the entertainment industry as soon as we can.”

Editor’s Note: I am sick of COVID and the Cron. If you’re not vaccinated or boosted, do it now. Or do not expect to be accepted into society.

Adele “One Night Only” Loses 9 Million Viewers 2nd Time Around, Beaten by “Bachelorette”

0

Wasn’t it only a month ago that the Oprah/Adele special, “One Night Only,” was the hot ratings story? It scored 11 million viewers and was the talk of the town.

So CBS thought they’d trot it out again last night. Unfortunately, the novelty has worn off “One Night Only,” which was goor for exactly that length of time.

Adele drew just 2.1 million viewers last night in her rerun. Even Adele herself was probably watching “The Bachelorette” season finale which ended with a happy couple for a change. The ABC block averaged around 3.3 million. Adele also skewed very old compared to the high number of women 18-49 who watched “The Bachelorette.”

Even with all that female excitement, “FBI” on CBS and football elsewhere scored much higher numbers than either of those other shows. Football rules this season despite Colin Kaepernick having been left out on a ledge by himself. And “FBI” was a rerun! Only half the viewers who watched FBI stuck around for Adele.

Motion Picture Academy Cancels January 15th Governors Awards, Critics Choice Looks Imperiled

0

The Motion Picture Academy has canceled their big January 15th event for the Governors Awards at the Fairmont Century Plaza. The reason is the rapid spread of COVID and Omicron cases in Los Angeles, and everywhere else. It’s simply not safe.

The Academy spokesperson: “We have made the difficult decision to change our plans in hosting the Governors Awards in person on January 15. Given the uncertainties around the variants, and the impact this could have on our community, we feel this is the best and safest decision for our honorees and guests. Rescheduled plans will come at a later date as we continue to prioritize the health and wellbeing of all those involved.”

So that’s it, and now the January 9th Critics Choice Awards also at the same hotel look imperiled, even though the group said yesterday they were going forward.

Frankly, January looks like a wash in LA and NY at least the first three weeks.

Samuel L. Jackson, Liv Ullmann and Elaine May are to receive Governor’s Awards. Danny Glover is also set to be the recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. But now they will all have to wait, maybe until the actual Academy Awards on March 27th.

James Franco Admits in New Radio Interview “I Did Sleep with Students” in Acting Classes He Taught

0

James Franco is a sociopath. That’s the main takeaway from the interviews Jess Cagle has posted with Franco from Sirius XM and ET Canada. I’ve put most of them here. But the main one is the one below in which Franco admits to sleeping with students in the acting classes he taught.

For most of these interviews, Franco basically gives monologue type speeches. He admits to being a sex and drug addict, and just talks and talks and talks. He has no awareness of his own mania, or if he does he kind of delights in it.

I can’t listen to all of this. It’s too much, and his voice is like a drill. Suffice to say, if he thinks this will solve the problems of his recently settled $2 million lawsuit with victims of sexual harassment or the lingering bad feeling among actors and students he worked with, he’s wrong.

I was friendly with Franco during his rise from minor Spider Man actor to multi hyphenate actor-director-producer-writer, grad student in four schools including Yale, self-published author.novelist, short story writer, and Oscar host. I watched as he flew higher and higher toward th sun at breakneck speed and then completely and fatally collapsed. It wasn’t pretty.

Please remember when you watch these videos that Franco is a very good actor. He has the gift of gab and he can be very convincing. He’s a persuasive con man. But I found all these interviews– Cagle did a great job– sad and pathetic and disturbing. I’m not sympathetic. I doubt anyone will be.
