“Belfast” Director, Oscar Nominee Actor, Movie Exec All Felled by COVID at BAFTA Awards

0

We knew this story earlier on Saturday but kept it quiet because it was a health issue.

But now apparently the beans have been spilled: many people who attended the BAFTA Awards in London last Sunday have tested positive for COVID. And it’s one with a lot of symptoms.

“Belfast” director Kenneth Branagh, star Ciaran Hinds, and at least one movie exec have all been felled. Branagh is missing tonight’s PGA Awards in Hollywood because of it.

The news was broken by young Jude Hill, the kid actor from “Belfast.” He let it slip on the red carpet.

Branagh’s sickness was tipped off today when he Zoomed into a PGA lunch panel rather than appear live.

COVID is not over despite people taking off masks and carrying on like it’s the end of the world. A new variant is out there, and about to make everything bad again unless people go with the protocols. Get vaxxed!

LIVE UPDATES Producers Guild Awards: “Ted Lasso,” RuPaul, John Oliver Shows

0

The Producers Guild of America is having its annual awards tonight at the Fairmont Century Plaa Hotel in Los Angeles.

Our Leah Sydney is on the scene. Winners of the PGA generally go on to win Best Picture at the Oscars.

The ballroom– the same one that hosted the Critics Choice Awards last Sunday– is jammed, Leah reports. Francis Ford Coppola is being honored and he’s sitting with his best buddies George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, at the main table. This trio overturned filmmaking in the early 70s and have been the most influential auteurs of their time along with Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen.

Spielberg, Leah reports, has been ecstatic to meet Jonas Poher Rasmussen director of the animated documentary, “Flee.”

Will Smith is chatting with Warner Bros films chief Toby Emmerich, and of course Serena & Venus Williams.

Also in attendance: Jane Campion, Josh Brolin, and young “Belfast” star Jude Hill, who is taking over the room…

Missing tonight: “Belfast” director Kenneth Branagh, who is probably exhausted from flying back and forth across North America many times in the last two weeks.

WINNERS:

Episodic Television: “Ted Lasso”

Game and Competition TV: RuPaul

Talk show: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Two Shocks: Maury Povich is 83, and His Who’s the Daddy Here’s the DNA Talk Show Is Ending

0

I have to say I’m a little shocked to learn Maury Povich is 83. Time has flown.

Anyway, his talk show, “Maury,” is ending after 31 years. Like Judge Judy and Jerry Springer, Maury will continue on in syndicated repeats until someone figures out they’re seeing shows fro 10 years ago or more. So far Judge Judy is getting away with it just fine, dragging in 4 to 5 million viewers a day.

Indeed, Judy Judy has moved to amazon’s IMDB streaming channel. But no one knows to find it, especially her older audience. They don’t know about Smart TV or Roku, think their phones are transistor radios, and so on. Also, I’m told reliably that “Judy Justice” is pretty bad. She got rid of her bailiff, has one case that goes on too long, and berates her own granddaughter.

Maury was a real journalist a long time ago. His father was the great Washington sports writer, Shirley Povich. But Maury saw where the money was, going from the DC magazine show “Panorama” to tabloid TV with “A Current Affair” to doing DNA tests on illegitimate babies of the promiscuous. His show is laughable but it’s earned him a fortune. He and former CBS news anchor Connie Chung live in the fabled Dakota Apartments, where they are neighbors of Yoko Ono, among others. The Poviches also own a massive ranch in Montana.

So it’s the end of a long era of fooling all the people all the time. Who’da thought you could make money humiliating people on national TV day after day? But Maury is part of a proud tradition that includes Springer and his bargain basement spin offs. I guess in syndication they will outlast all of us.

Here’s what we will never see in the Broadcasting Hall of Fame:

Was Jimmy Kimmel Too Ill to Do a Friday Show? Or Was the Rerun Last Night To Plug “Encanto” for The Oscars Again??

0

Fans of Jimmy Kimmel got a sense of deja vu Friday night.

When the monologue started it sounded eerily familiar. Like we’d heard it before, and very recently.

Indeed, Friday’s show was a rerun of…this past Monday’s show. The guests were Lin Manuel Miranda, promoting Disney’s “Encanto,” and Sebastian Yatra singing the Oscar nominated “Dos Oruguitas,” from the Oscar nominated movie.

Was Jimmy too ill to make a new show for Friday? Or was there another reason for a rerun.

Let’s do the math: Academy voters are voting this weekend, Disney owns ABC and Kimmel, why not give a second push to “Encanto” and those Orguguitas before the ballots come pouring in?

And so they did. It must have been planned because on the cable box there was no indication that it was a rerun. The Friday show ran as if it were new. Usually if there had been a sudden change, the show would have carried an advisory. And it wouldn’t be a rerun from the same week. But on the ABC website, all the guests for this past week were listed except for this show, which just said: “TBD.”

“Dos Oruguitas” is not the hit song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” although both songs will be featured on the Oscars because again, ABC is owned by Disney, etc. There will not be two songs from the other films. The other nominees for Best Song include Reba McEntire and Diane Warrens “Somehow You Do,” “No Time to Die,” Beyonce’s “Be Alive,” and “Down to Joy” from anti-lockdown, anti-vax Van Morrison. (If the latter starts coughing at you at an Oscar party, do a Moondance and move!)

Kimmel should be back with five new fresh shows next week. Although, who knows? Oscar voting goes through Tuesday. Maybe Monday’s show will be a rerun of a plug for “West Side Story.” Hey, if you own everything, why not?

More on Kanye: Grammy Awards Pull His Scheduled Performance Over “Concerning Online Behavior”

More on Kanye today: the Grammy Awards have pulled his scheduled performance from the April 3rd telecast.

The reason is “concerning online behavior.”

Yes, online Kanye called Trevor Noah a “koon” and accused Pete Davidson of exposing his kids to drugs.

Were there to be no consequences for this? Noah is hosting the Grammy Awards. Having Kanye there would not be a wise idea.

Prior to Kanye’s explosion on social media, he was welcome. “Donda” has several Grammy nominations. There was no question that he was being embraced by the Recording Academy.

But if you can’t act rationally in public, why should you be rewarded with a chance to promote your product?

CBS cannot trust Kanye West not to have an inappropriate moment on Live TV. He’s reacted poorly in the past to Taylor Swift and Adele winning awards over Beyonce. He can’t control himself. Instagram barred him this week after posting about Noah, attacking Pete Davidson’s writing partner, and accusing Davidson of potentially hooking kids on drugs.

The Blast first reported the cancellation. Variety reconfirmed it. Below is Kanye’s post about Trevor Noah.

Kanye West Wipes Account Clean After Instagram Suspension Over Racist Post to Trevor Noah

0

Once again in the short lifespan of social media, Kanye West has wiped his account clean.

Kanye was suspended from Instagram earlier this week after posting several offensive messages including a racist one pointed to talk show host (and Grammy host) Trevor Noah and one accusing Pete Davidson of exposing his kids with Kim Kardashian to drugs.

The suspension was thought to be just for 24 hours. But now Kanye’s wiped the whole account clear. It’s not deleted, but all past posts are gone.

This is a major blow since Kanye was promoting his $200 Stem Player, the only way to hear his “Donda 2” unless fans have found it– and they have — floating around the internet for free. Meanwhile, Kanye continues to suffer the results of feuding publicly with Davidson and Kardashian.

This is called a “sh*tshow” in the broadest terms.

Box Office: “Batman” Takes $10 Mil Friday But Audiences Are Drawn to Surprise Number 2 “Jujutsu” Anime Movie

0

Friday box office: “The Batman” was number 1 again with $10 million. Expected.

Unexpected: audiences were drawn to anime film, “Jujutsu” which collected another $5 million in addition Thursday previews. Total is now $8.625 million. Sony’s Crunchyroll has the number 2 film this weekend.

Surprise!

“Jujustu” has swamped all the other big label new releases this weekend starting with A 24’s “X” horror film which had a $1.7 million opening.

Focus Features brought in “The Outfit” and Sony’s regular label offered “Umma,” a Korean film. Their respective numbers were $530,000 and $340,000.

“Jujutsu,” already an international hit with $107 million worldwide, has captured the interest of US audiences.

Meanwhile, “The Batman” will flirt with $300 million this weekend.

At Critics Choice Awards, “Borat” Star Maria Bakalova Teases a Sequel to the Sequel

0

I never really got to tell the story of the Critics Choice Awards, the best awards show of this season. Yes, it was last Sunday night but right now Academy voters are filling out ballots for the Oscars. The Critics Choice was the last bellwether.

“Power of the Dog” won Best Picture, but “Belfast” won Best Ensemble, a fact that shouldn’t be lost on Oscar voters. While Jane Campion has sewn up Best Director, Best Picture still rests on what has claimed the voters’ hearts. “Belfast” and even “CODA” remain strong adversaries.

The Critics Choice show managed to rack up 1.5 million viewers, which doesn’t seem like much but think of it: most of these, a million, were on the CW Network. Imagine what the CCAs could do on CBS, where they belong. Running on the CW and TBS, the CCAs equaled their 202o numbers, the show that occurred weeks before the pandemic stopped our lives.

This year the awards were held at the Fairmont Century Plaza, newly rebuilt from top to bottom replacing what seemed like the centuries old building that used to stand on Avenue of the Stars. The old Century Plaza was used for everything, and it felt that way. Like the Critics Choice, it is now new and shiny, designed for warmth and humanity. The CCAs fit right in there.

This is the only televised awards at which movie and TV critics sit with the casts of shows and films, and are not relegated to a back room. I was lucky: my table was with Kristen Wiig and her very funny movie, “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.” Wiig, known best for “Bridesmaids” and “SNL,” was totally charming in her black pixie haircut. We talked about the “SNL” she hosted from home in May 2020, her Mother’s Day monologue, was which kind of brilliant.

Around the room I got to talk to Will Smith.  He told me he couldn’t believe how well “King Richard” has worked out and that he understood Richard Williams even more now. He was kind of glowing in the presence of Serena and Venus. He said he’d said he’d spent a lot of time with them. I asked, but had he played tennis with them at all? Will blushed. “Not really…” he said, trailing off.

I was thrilled to run into Carey Mulligan, who’s moving with her family to New York to play Leonard Bernstein’s wife, Felicia, in his biopic directed by (and starring) Bradley Cooper. Carey is a breath of fresh air at any event, but she had some more good news: Mumford & Sons is recording a new album right now. How does she know? Her husband is Marcus Mumford. Their album was released in November 2018.

But the most tantalizing scoop of the night: Maria Bakalova, aka Tutar from “Borat: Subsequent Film,” teased a possible subsequent subsequent film. Does that mean a sequel? Listen to this: Maria, who was found in Bulgaria, is now an L.A. actress. She’s beautiful and well spoken, far beyond the hilarious and sad Tutar. She’s got four projects going on now. When I lamented that we might never see Tutar again, Maria replied: “You never know…” A “Borat” sequel, I wondered? “Never say never,” said Maria.

Indeed, Sacha Baron Cohen has been very quiet lately. That’s always a good sign. Cohen’s frequent collaborator, Anthony Hines, I’m told has a terrific film coming called “Robots.” But Cohen is too, too quiet.

PS Best couple of the night: Joshua Jackson, a nominee for “Dr. Death,” and wife Jodie Turner Smith, who was so outstanding in “Queen & Slim.” They met backstage at an awards show, they told me, and it was love at first sight. (I always knew Josh was smart, we share a birthday.) Cheers to them!

LEAH SYDNEY REPORTS FROM THE CCAs:

Rita Moreno telling Andrew Garfield, you are absolutely adorable. Andrew telling her that she was the most “elegant, gorgeous lady in the room” …Guillermo Del Toro and his lovely wife, and fellow “Nightmare Alley” screenwriter Kim Morgan being gracious to all. Kristen Stewart only had eyes for her fiancée, Dylan Meyer.  The women were trying to be as low key as possible, sitting and talking to each other and their table mates. Kristen was saying hello to those she knew, though. …

When I told Jada Pinkett Smith that I really liked her mom, Adrienne, on her successful show “Red Table Talk” (on Facebook, YouTube, etc.) her daughter Willow is on as well, he replied, “You know I hear that a lot.  My Mom tells it like it is.”  Her husband Will, who won for Best Actor, taking pics with all the eager critics from across the country.  Speaking about Jada, did indeed look regal in her headpiece of diamonds, which I found out has 53 diamonds and cost $46.250.

Melanie Lynskey, who truly did not believe she was going to win before the show when we chatted, did indeed win for her turn in “Yellowjackets.” She had the crowd in the palm of her hand when she thanked Producers for “not asking her to change anything about herself.”  Melanie, a real sized woman and a New Zealand native, is married to the equally down to earth Jason Ritter.

Kieran Culkin, who went on to win for Best Supporting Actor for “Succession,” was joking around with Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox at their table, putting all the supposed strife rumors to rest.  Lots of champagne at that table.  Lin Manuel Miranda and Kristen Chenoweth loving up on each other.  Hallie Berry did inspire the crowd, including Marlee Matlin, who pumped her fists in agreement, with her take no prisoners acceptance speech for the #SeeHer Award…

Christian Slater, Michael Keaton chatting together.  The series-ending “This Is Us” table, was having their moment as this was their last CCA show.  Chrissy Metz, Sterling K. Brown and more were just kicking back.

The shining star of the night goes to Jude Hill from “Belfast.”  He was living the dream all night, with his sidekick and co-star Jamie Dornan by his side.  Jude was acting like a pro, even though “Belfast” was his first acting job ever.  When he won as Best Young Actor and thanked “his fellow actor” the iconic Judi Dench, well that garnered the biggest laugh of the night.

“Belfast” Wins AARP Movies for Grown Ups, Surprisingly Putting a Leash on “Power of the Dog”

0

“Belfast” won the AARP Movies for Grown Ups Awards tonight in an under-publicized presentation.

Director Kenneth Branagh and star Judi Dench accepted the award in a pretaped message. Unlike in previous years, the AARP Awards was without an audience and obviously the winners knew in advance they’d been selected.

But it was a surprise that “Belfast” beat “The Power of the Dog” and “CODA.” Could it be an Oscar precursor?

Who else won? Who knows? For some reason, the rest of the show has been kept a secret. Nary a press release has been issued since January. But I think Will Smith took Best Actor. Keep refreshing for more info…

Box Office: Sony Worldwide Anime Hit “Jujutsu” Scores Huge $2.8 Mil in Thursday Previews

0

Ever hear of Crunchyroll? I thought it was something you ate.

They’re an anime production company, formerly called Funimation. Sony bought them a few years ago from Warner Media for a little under a billion dollars.

Now Crunchyroll has the number 2 movie in America. Last night “Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie” made $2.8 million in previews and finished second only to “The Batman.” The anime film debuted in roughly the same number of theaters as A24’s horror him, “X,” which only made $440,000.

“Jujutsu” is already an international hit. It’s made $100 million around the globe. Now it’s come for us!

Just so we have all this straight, the film is directed by Seong-Hu Park and written by Hiroshi Seko. And they are very happy, whoever they are!
