Oscars Give Lifetime Achievement Award to Elaine May, She Only Agreed to Come at the Very Last Minute

0

I was shocked when I heard Elaine May turned up at the Governor’s Awards, the Oscars version of Lifetime Achievement on Friday night.

She looked great on the New York Times’s Kyle Buchanan’s Twitter feed. She even cracked that she’d been promised “Zelensky” — the president of Ukraine — was going to give her the award. Instead she had to settle for Bill Murray.

My shock was because all day Friday I heard from people in the great director and writer’s camp that she was absolutely not going to the ceremony.

Even though Elaine had gone to Los Angeles, she had nixed the plan to actually attend the Governor’s Awards.

Within seconds of her arrival at the Hollywood and Highland center, I received an email: “Bill Murray persuaded her to go. I don’t know how it happened.” By all accounts, May was the last to arrive and the first to leave. She didn’t walk the red carpet, and didn’t remain long enough to be in a group picture with the other honorees.

Elaine was feted along with Samuel L. Jackson, Danny Glover, and Liv Ullman. The Governor’s Awards are usually held in November, but this year they were delayed because of the Omicron COVID spike.

So congrats to Elaine, and everyone is glad she changed her mind. The 90 year old was comedy partners with Mike Nichols  in the late 50s and early 60s, became a doctor on screenplays, then directed such hits as “The Heartbreak Kid” and “A New Leaf.” Her list of credits is endless. She also won a Tony Award just three years ago for “The Waverly Gallery.”

WIll “The Goldbergs” Keep Pretending Murray Is Around, Or Kill Off Their Main Character, If the Show is Renewed?

0

Deadline.com is reporting that “The Goldbergs” star Wendi McClendon-Covey has signed a new deal with ABC TV.

The report suggests that this is an indication “The Goldbergs” will be renewed for a 10th season.

The show is fairly low rated, but ABC has nothing to replace it. Still, they have a problem.

As I reported a couple of weeks ago, “The Goldbergs” has been pretending since January that Jeff Garlin’s character, Murray, is somewhere around but on screen. The show uses a stand in for him to pretend that Murray is still in the family.

But Garlin left “The Goldbergs” a few months ago after complaints to HR that he used bad language on the set. Imagine that. Garlin is a comedian and star of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” But in this new pristine environment, his Borscht  Belt ways didn’t go over.

“The Goldbergs” will have to kill off Murray if they’re coming back for Season 10. Getting rid of Garlin won’t be easy. The show already lost the great George Segal to actual death last year.

The sitcom is relatively uninteresting as it stands now. It’s like white noise. It’s like other ABC comedies of the recent past– see “The Middle” — that you’re surprised to discover are still on the air!

Exclusive: Oscar Nominees, Guests, Presenters Will Wear Blue Ribbons in Support of Refugees Around the World

0

Oscars go blue.

With the situation in  Ukraine being front and center, look for numerous celebrities, nominees, presenters and industry professionals to be wearing a blue ribbon with the hashtag #withrefugees.

The ribbons are distributed by the UN Refugee Agency, who have put together this campaign for the celebrities and more to wear the Blue ribbon with hashtag #withrefugees in solidarity with ALL people forced to flee oppression.

Anadil Hossain, who is the Principal Communications Advisor for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the UN refugee agency launched this initiate with help from Bonnie Abaunza.  Hossain notes that “This notes that “This year’s Oscar nominated films include some powerful stories centered on the themes of refugees, displacement, home and belonging —  Encanto, Flee, Three Songs for Benazir, Belfast and Dune —  at a time when the world is witnessing the largest refugee crisis since WW2. Artists have been wanting to show their solidarity for Ukraine and we wanted to ask them to extend this support to the almost 84 million people forced to flee. Whenever. Wherever.  While the ribbons are a symbolic visible gesture, we saw this an opportunity to message around a wider understanding and awareness of this global humanitarian crisis – as the nominated films this year have done with great imagination and empathy.”

Good for the UNHCR and Hollywood for supporting such worthy cause.

“Spider Man” and “Ted Lasso” Win Publicists Award, Francis Ford Coppola Gets Lifetime Achievement Honor

0

The ICG Publicists Awards luncheon was one of the best I’ve ever been to this afternoon.

“The Godfather” director, Francis Ford Coppola, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. I was told Coppola would get his award and leave the Beverly Hilton quickly, but he stayed through the whole luncheon and had a pretty good time.

I asked him about the mini-series, “The Offer,” but he hasn’t seen it yet. “The Offer” tells producer Al Ruddy’s story of how “The Godfather” was made. Coppola tells me he hasn’t seen the series yet. He said “Everyone says they had something to do with the making of The Godfather. Al Ruddy wasn’t on set much because he was out there making deals and saving the picture.”

The Publicists Guild is a unique event because you get to see a lot of people you like some you don’t. The publicists get to see a few press people they’d rather forget existed. It’s very convivial.

This year the winner of the best movie campaign went to “Spider Man: No Way Home.” The TV award went to “Ted Lasso.” Both teams deserve the win, they did amazing jobs.

The Les Mason Award, the highest honor the publicists can bestow on one of its own members, resulted in a tie and was presented to both Sheryl Main and David Waldman (EVP Domestic Publicity, Paramount Pictures) by “Jackass” star  Johnny Knoxville.  Waldman gave one of the best speeches I’ve ever heard at one of these luncheons.

The Publicist of the Year Award went to the very popular Marshall Weinbaum of Disney, presented by David Alvarez from “West Side Story.” The Bob Yeager Award for Community Service was given to Chrissy Quesada Valentine, (VP Global Still Photography, Sony Pictures Entertainment) for her passionate efforts, energy, and talents to help advance the cause of animal rights and welfare, presented by Monica Guzman (Sr. Photo Editor, Sony) and Holly Connors (VP Worldwide Photography, Paramount).

Other honorees were Mike DeLuca and Pam Abdy of MGM Studios, and Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, who created the TV series, “Reservation Dogs.”

TV: Smash Hit “Only Murders in the Building” Season 2 Will Start Rolling Out End of June Before Emmy Voting for 1st Season

0

Big news in TV Land:

“Only Murders in the Building” is returning to Hulu sooner, not later, than thought.

The smash hit starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez will start rolling out at the end of June. Originally it was supposed to return in August.

But since Hulu goes week by week instead of a binge drop in one day, “Only Murders” can begin its run without waiting for all the episodes to be finished.

Since voting for the Emmy Awards — for their first season — isn’t over until mid July, this will give the TV Academy a lot of excitement for the murder mystery. “Only Murders” is a watercooler show, with lots of word of mouth following each episode.

Great idea to come back early. Count me as a big fan, among many. This will be much needed by the end of June!

Aretha Franklin Would Have Turned 80 Today, Still the Best Singer of Our Lifetime

0

Today would have been Aretha Franklin’s 80th birthday. She was born in a magical year for pop stars — Paul McCartney and Carole King are also turning 80. She was also born on what would be a special day– March 25th– Elton John shares the birthday although he’s a bit younger.

Aretha was and is the standard for the Best Voice, the greatest not just Black female singer but the best singer. Her voice came from her soul and resonates even today. Listen to her records on the radio, which are played constantly, and you hear the love, the pain, the heart, the history.

Different songs float up and you hear them in new ways. “Since You Been Gone,” “Seesaw,” Aretha’s tellings of “Let it Be” and “Eleanor Rigby” — these are not happenstances. She and Jerry Wexler or Tom Dowd or Arif Mardin planned them to the nth degree. And then with the structure in place, Aretha’s magic rises up and spins whatever the concept was into gold.

I ate with her, gossiped with her, waited patiently while she paid the band (three hours sometimes), I went shopping with her, and laughed with her even when the end was very near. Like all her friends, I miss her every day. Knowing how ill she was, Aretha celebrated every birthday of her last decade in style. So raise a glass to her today, she was one of a kind and will always be missed and remembered with great love.

Hollywood: John Legend Says He’s Made His Most Exciting Album, Mary Steenburgen Writing More Songs, LA Media Eating Own Tail

0

Big night in Hollywood Thursday night:

The Oscar Wilde Awards were held at the Ebell Theater, a swanky and elegant event that brought out a slew of A listers. “Star Wars,” “Star Trek,” and “Mission Impossible” director JJ Abrams hosted the night with his wife Katie McGrath and their Bad Robot company. Kenneth Branagh couldn’t be there, but Jamie Dornan filled in for him accepted an award for “Belfast.” Another recipient was “Don’t Look Up” director Adam McKay, presented to by the great Mary Steenburgen.

In the crowd, vaccinated and reduced in size but still convivial, I ran into terrific actress Elisabeth Shue, who doesn’t seem to age, and TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz, and “Hotel Rwanda” director Terry George, among others. I also got to meet the great casting director, April Webster, who guided my favorite TV series, “Lost” through six seasons for JJ Abrams.

Mary Steenburgen and I caught up after two years. You may remember the story of her coming out of a 2007 surgery and suddenly being musical. Something about the anesthesia or the doctor leaving a tuning fork in her during an operation. It’s one of those weird Believe it Or Not things but it was permanent. So Mary, an Oscar winner for acting in “Ragtime” years ago, tells me she is writing plenty of songs, received a nomination from the Guild of Music Supervisors, wrote a bunch of the songs used on “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” on NBC, and is writing songs now for an animated film. And, of course, she’s acting all the time, tons of movie and TV credits. Not bad!

THE REAL A LIST HEADED OVER TO CRAIG’S ON MELROSE, OF COURSE. That’s where we found John Legend hosting a table of friends. Plus Ryan Phillippe and Breckin Meyer were having an unofficial reunion of their movie, “54,” about Studio 54 at another table. “Vampire Diaries” stars Ian Somerhalder, wife Nikki Reed, and their pal, Paul Wesley, were convening at another. Rod Stewart’s daughter, Kimberly (her mom is the great Alana Hamilton Stewart) was in the house. Craig’s by 9pm is now brimming over with New Hollywood, young people galore in the front, in the back, in the middle!

John Legend is a great talent of course. It was a pleasure  running into him. I’ve known him since he started out. He works all the time, acting (“Jesus Christ Superstar”) recording, TV appearances. He told me last night, celebrating a pal’s birthday, that his attitude every day is that he’s hungry and he’s got to get out there. That what keeps his work fresh,

To that end, John has changed record labels after 17 years. He’s jumped from Sony/Columbia to Universal. He’s already finished a new album for Universal, which sounds like it will be released soon. John tells me, “It’s my most innovative and upbeat record yet, my best so far, I’m very proud of it. You’re going to love it, Roger.”

And where was his gorgeous wife, Chrissy Teigen? “Home with the kids,” John said, “working on all her projects.”

And PS Ryan Phillippe, who similarly doesn’t age (he told me he’s turned 47 but he looks 27): shooting a big pilot for a new ABC series this fall. This time, ABC better keep him in the lead. He ankled “Big Sky” after its premiere episode, and the series tanked in the ratings!

AND OF COURSE HOLLYWOOD PRESS EATING ITS OWN TAIL:  Both the LA Times and Los Angeles Magazine have scathing pieces today about the Oscars being “dead.” So stupid. If they kill off the Academy Awards, these writers will not have jobs. Is that their goal? What’s the point?

Both publications just sound cranky and in need of some kind of hemorrhoidal help immediately.

The whole idea of 10 Best Picture nominations is that you get the wide range of films from “Power of the Dog” to “Dune,” and “CODA” to “King Richard.” And this year, the 8 categories getting awards during the first hour — everyone will be acknowledged, no one will be disrespected. And if it doesn’t work, there’s always next year.

LA Mag, LA Times, get a hold of yourselves, please!

She Feels Pretty: “West Side Story” Star Rachel Zegler Gets Grammy Gig, Too, After Oscars Invite Flap

0

Rachel Zegler has zoomed from wearing her boyfriend’s flannel in front of a TV set to appearing on two huge awards shows within a week of each other.

Zegler has been added to the April 3 Grammy Awards on CBS. She will join a special In Memoriam performance featuring songs of Stephen Sondheim by Broadway stars Cynthia Erivo, current nominee Leslie Odom Jr., and current nominee Ben Platt.

Only a few days ago Zegler was lamenting on social media that Disney wouldn’t let her leave the set of “Snow White” in London, a $200 million production, to fly to Los Angeles and be on the Oscars. But once she posted that she hadn’t been invited, all hell broke loose. She was immediately added to the Academy Awards show. Now she’ll stay another week and do the Grammys as well.

What a turn of events! And all because of a “random” question on Instagram from a fan asking what she was wearing on the Oscars. Zegler replied “her boyfriend’s flannel” because she hadn’t been invited. That fan should really be thanked for making all this happen by accident!

Also set for the Grammys are Jon Batiste, Foo Fighters, H.E.R., Nas, and Chris Stapleton. They’re in addition to Brothers Osborne, BTS, Brandi Carlile, Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X with Jack Harlow, and Olivia Rodrigo.

But the performer everyone is waiting to hear an announcement about is Adele. The problem is, Adele’s album, “30,” didn’t make the eligibility cut off. It was released in November 2021. So she would appear on the next Grammys in January 2023. That’s fine except the album is hot now, and Adele did her big Oprah special for CBS.

So now what? Adele also cancelled thirteen weekends of shows in Las Vegas, where the Grammys are being held. She’s not too popular in Sin City right now, with ticket holders, promoters, ticket sellers, and all kinds of other Vegas workers left holding the bag. Maybe she’s afraid to set foot in town lest some fan approach her about reimbursement!

Exclusive: Grammys Will Salute Paul Simon with TV Special Taping April 6th in Los Angeles

0

For the last few years the Grammy Awards have taped a special a few nights after the big show honoring this or that legend.

So far the Beatles, the Bee Gees, Stevie Wonder, the sounds of Motown, and Aretha Franklin are among those who’ve had this special recognition.

I’m thrilled to report that the next one is Paul Simon. The great singer songwriter will get a tribute show taped at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood on April 6th. Since the Grammys are being held on April 3rd, the expectation is that a number of that show’s performers will turn up to salute Simon.

Simon’s career stretches back to the mid 60s when he and Art Garfunkel took the world by storm with “The Sound of Silence.” For five years and about half a dozen albums they influenced generations of other singers and songwriters. They broke up in 1970 after the landmark “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” but reunited in 1976 with “My Little Town.” In 1981 they appeared together in the historic Concert in Central Park.

These days, Simon and Garfunkel are not close as they near 80 years old. They’ve known each other for 65 years and are a little like the comedians in “The Sunshine Boys” who won’t speak to each other. It’s doubtful that Garfunkel will be included in this show but they’ll have to handle his part of Simon’s like properly. If it’s given short shrift, the reaction will be instant.

Since the show is being taped April 6th, that means Simon won’t be able to attend Clive Davis’s 90th birthday party in New York. I’m sure they are each disappointed. It was Davis who launched Simon & Garfunkel, and later decided that the title track of ‘BOTW” album would be the first single.

Can’t wait to see this show, though, when it airs on CBS.

Oscars Add “West Side Story” Star Rachel Zegler After All, Plus Venus and Serena Williams

0

“West Side Story” star Rachel Zegler has gotten her way. She will present at the Oscars on Sunday.

Zegler will come in from London where she’s filming “Snow White.” She said on Instagram the other day that she hadn’t been invited to the Oscars despite being the star of “West Side Story.”

No one’s said anything but it was likely Disney cautioning her not to make the trip so she wouldn’t possibly he exposed to COVID. But the word went out, Oscar fans were up in arms, and now Zegler will be flown in.

Also added to the list of presenters are Josh Brolin, Jacob Elordi of “Euphoria” fame, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Momoa, Jill Scott, and J.K. Simmons,  The Oscars will air live on ABC and broadcast outlets worldwide on Sunday, March 27, 2022, at 8 p.m. EDT/5 p.m. PDT.

Previously announced Oscars presenters include Halle Bailey, Stephanie Beatriz, Ruth E. Carter, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Kevin Costner, Jamie Lee Curtis, DJ Khaled, Jennifer Garner, H.E.R., Tiffany Haddish, Woody Harrelson, Tony Hawk, Anthony Hopkins, Samuel L. Jackson, Lily James, Daniel Kaluuya, Zoë Kravitz, Mila Kunis, Lady Gaga, John Leguizamo, Simu Liu, Rami Malek, Shawn Mendes, Bill Murray, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Rosie Perez, Tyler Perry, Chris Rock, Tracee Ellis Ross, Naomi Scott, Kelly Slater, Wesley Snipes, Uma Thurman, John Travolta, Shaun White and Yuh-Jung Youn.
