Will Smith Gets 10 Year Suspension from Motion Picture Academy After Infamous Oscar “Slap,” Banned from Show

Will Smith has received his punishment from the Motion Picture Academy: 10 years suspension. He can’t vote or attend events or get swag.

He will not have to return his new Oscar, however. And he can still be nominated for one, although it’s unlikely. He’s banned from attending the Oscar ceremony for 10 years, too.

As I reported last week, Smith has been hanging out in Dubai with the crowned prince and not dealing with the consequences of his infamous Oscar “slap.”

His projects, however, are in limbo. And his business deals with his new financial partners are sketchy.

But Smith is wealthy beyond belief. He could take off two years and not notice it. Or more, really.

Here’s the Academy’s statement:


The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage.

During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For this, we are sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented.

Today, the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, in addition to accepting his resignation. The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.

We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances. We also want to thank our hosts, nominees, presenters and winners for their poise and grace during our telecast.

This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring trust in the Academy. We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted.

RIP Kathryn Hays, Great Star of “As the World Turns,” Famous for “Star Trek” Episode, Dies at 87

Very sad news: Kathryn Hays, who played Kim Hughes on “As the World Turns” from 1972 til the show’s last episode in 2010, has died at age 87. She was immensely popular first as a heroine and then as a matriarch. Hays played the character with wit and humor, and was legendary for calling her favorite people on the show “Toots” on screen.

When Hays came to “As the World Turns” she already had a long resume and was famous to “Star Trek” fans for an  episode called “The Empath.” Other credits included “Hawaiian Eye,” “Dr. Kildare,” “Route 66,” “Bonanza,”and “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” Hays also appeared in three Broadway productions. She came to the soap opera in 1972 after famous Hollywood marriage, to movie star Glenn Ford, from 1966 to 1969. (Sadly, he suffered from alcoholism and depression.)

In a statement, ATWT co-star Don Hastings, who played her husband, Bob Hughes, from 1985 to 2010, said, “Our relationship as Bob and Kim was as close as Kathryn and my relationship, except we were not married. We were more like brother and sister and we were great friends. Our biggest squabble was that she always wanted to rehearse and I wanted to take a nap. This is a huge loss to all who knew her.”

In the 1980s, Meg Ryan played Hays’s stepdaughter and Julianne Moore played her daughter on the long running soap.

Hays had been living near her daughter and her family in Illinois during the pandemic, but died where she’d lived for decades in Fairfield, Connecticut.

Hays, Hastings, and Eileen Fulton and all the stars of the Procter & Gamble New York based soaps live on, on YouTube. Hays will always be remembered fondly.

Kid Rock’s Bid for Right Wing, Redneck Fans Falls Flat as His “Bad Reputation” Album Flops

Kid Rock claimed he had a bad reputation. But no one cared.

Bob Ritchie released his “Bad Reputation” album a month ago, hoping to cash in one beer swilling, truck driving right wing rednecks.

But Ritchie is a Richie Rich, a private school kid from a wealthy Detroit suburb who grew up in mansion. The whole thing is a fraud, as I and others pointed out. And for the fans he wanted who could read, that scotched the deal.

“Bad Reputation” has been a sales bust — just 25,000 copies including CDs, downloads, and streaming. And you can see the failure on You Tube. The Kid Rock You Tube channel has 1.78 million subscribers. But the title track’s video has had only 213K plays. Ouch!

ABC Kicking “Dancing with the Stars” to Disney Plus in Favor of NFL Football Games of All Kinds

Say goodbye to “Dancing with the Stars.”

ABC is sending the long running series to Disney Plus for two seasons beginning this fall. The older viewers who watch it will never be able to find it, and we’ll never know if they do.

In its place comes football, football, football. ABC will show more NFL football games, especially from ESPN, and they have a plan for some kind of NFL Football competition game. Maybe the players will dance in the off season!

The jettisoning of “Dancing with the Stars” shouldn’t come as a surprise. The network dumped popular host Tom Bergeron a couple of years ago. They replaced him with Tyra Banks. And the whole enterprise collapsed. Without Bergeron and Erin Andrews, “DWTS” lost its sense of community to its niche followers.

Good luck to these streaming shows. Older viewers simply don’t engage with Roku or Apple TV or Amazon Prime the way they do regular TV. For most it’s another remote control to think about. And there are no ratings reported for streaming. So now all of these things depend on subscriptions. Just ask Judge Judy. Her IMDB Channel show is a mystery to her syndication fans who are still watching 10 and 20 year old reruns rather than figure out Smart TV.

Thursday Overnight Ratings: ABC Narrowly Beats NBC, “SVU” Takes “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Organized Crime” in Trouble

The biggest take away from Thursday ratings is that “Law & Order Organized Crime” is in trouble.

Never a ratings success on its own, “OG” fell below 3 million viewers to just 2.89 mil last night. It still beat “Blue Sky” on ABC, but you and I could do that with a puppet show. “OG” has gotten a new showrunner and hopefully it will revive itself with better story telling and characters — and a mission. But right now, Chris Meloni’s Elliot Stabler is needs actual stabilizing.

Lucky for Meloni, NBC is betting on the full Thursday night “Law & Order” schedule. “SVU” last night beat “Grey’s Anatomy” by a nose, which kept NBC competitive.  They have a rock solid following at “SVU” and don’t play crazy chess games with their characters and actors a la “Grey’s.” But the new “L&O” classic revival and “OG” each need to rev it up. ABC beat NBC slightly for the evening.

Both ABC and NBC were lucky CBS’s “Ghosts” was off and “Young Sheldon” was in rerun mode. Don’t worry, they’ll be back.

Exclusive: Alicia Keys Eyeing Free Agent Status, Leaving Sony-RCA After 22 Years

Alicia Keys is key to this generation of singer-songwriters. Her track record and list of hits is top of the heap after two decades.

But like John Mayer, I’m hearing Keys is also considering leaving the label home she started with and stuck with for the last two decades.

Keys’ career started with being signed to Columbia Records at Sony. But when nothing materialized there, Clive Davis signed her to his new J Records. The result was “Fallin'” and the album “Songs in A Minor,” which sold 12 million copies worldwide in 2001.

Since then Keys has from success to success. But a new chapter is about to begin. The multi talented singer-songwriter-musician has fulfilled her last contract, signed in 2018, and is looking to make a new deal. Or who knows? Mayer left Sony a few weeks ago, and I’ve heard he may just go album by album to the highest bidder.

Life with record labels is changing, especially for established artists. Money isn’t always the only consideration. (Look at Verve Records, home of the newly minted Grammy winner Jon Batiste. He was signed there during a previous administration by former chief Danny Bennett.) So stay tuned. Meantime, Keys released a new video this week for the track “City of Gods (Part II).”

Paul Simon Honored by Grammys with TV Special Tribute Starring Stevie Wonder, Sting, Dave Matthews, and…Paul Simon!

While a huge chunk of the music business at Clive Davis’s 90th birthday extravaganza in New York, another big event was going on in Los Angeles.

As I told you first last week, the Grammys filmed a TV tribute to legendary singer songwriter Paul Simon. The show, produced by Ken Ehrlich and written by David Wild, will air on CBS sometime this spring or summer.

Among the artists who performed Simon’s songs were Stevie Wonder, Dave Matthews, Billy Porter, Brad Paisley, Rhiannon Giddens, Angélique Kidjo, Little Big Town, Trombone Shorty, Shaggy, Take 6 and the great New Orleans legend Irma Thomas.

And Paul Simon himself. The 195 minute taping concluded with Simon performing “Graceland,” “American Tune” with Giddens, and “The Sound of Silence.”

Other artists also included Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, the Jonas Brothers, Eric Church, Jimmy Cliff, Ledisi, the Bangles’ Susanna Hoffs, and Eric Idle of “Monty Python” fame. Not in attendance: Art Garfunkel, because he was in New York singing at the Davis birthday.

Presenters included Oprah Winfrey, Dustin Hoffman (who introduced “Mrs. Robinson”), Woody Harrelson, and Herbie Hancock. Sting and Bonnie Raitt each contributed videos that were rolled into the live show.

Not all of this will make a two hour special on CBS. But it would be swell to see it all on Paramount Plus one day.

How did it all turn out? We’ll have to wait until the producers do their magic and we see the finished product. But it sounds amazing. Bravo, Paul Simon!

Ratings: Kardashians Return, This Time to Network TV, And Are Creamed by “Survivor,” “Chicago” Shows

The Kardashians are back.

On Wednesday night America’s most avaricious, publicity-hungry family returned to TV after really not a long enough break.

They’ve left the E! channel after many seasons and made a deal with streamer Hulu. To make a splash, they added a special last night on ABC, which like Hulu is owned by Disney.

Did anyone watch them? Yes and no. But the upshot is that the K’s drew just 2.8 million viewers at 8pm. They were beaten soundly by “Survivor” on CBS (5.5 million) and “Chicago Med” on NBC (6.6 million). They trailed even in the key demos. Older audiences tuned in, but not younger ones.

Why Hulu commissioned more of this is unknown. On the E! channel, the Kardashians had fallen to an all time low in viewership. Their respective stories of fashion gluttony, divorces, and affairs were done. Completely. Their ratings last night were about on par with ABC’s sitcoms on Wednesday or daytime soap operas. The special didn’t indicate a mandate for more of these women.

COVID Updates: “Plaza Suite” Pauses as SJP Tests Positive, “Macbeth” Still Off, Patti Scialfa Rocks at Home

I am so sorry for all these performers testing positive for COVID.

Last night, Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa couldn’t make Clive Davis’s 90th because they said they were in “quarantine.” I hear that Patti, one of my favorite all time rockers, tested positive, which means Bruce is next, and no one is leaving that house until all they feel better! Get a nice warm blanket and Cover Me!

On Broadway, Sarah Jessica Parker, of course, tested positive after Matthew Broderick did earlier this week. So “Plaza Suite” goes on hold until further notice.

Across the pond, Sting has had to reschedule many shows because he tested positive. He’s waiting to resume performances as soon his tests are good.

Still on pause is “Macbeth” with Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga. They won’t return until Monday, April 11th.

Last night at Clive’s birthday everyone had to show proof of vaccination. But a few of our favorite people couldn’t make it because they also tested positive. Sending get well wishes to all. Wear your masks! Get the boosters!

Exclusive: John Lennon Biopic Is Nearing Reality as Script is Finished by “Bohemian Rhapsody” Writer

The big news in the Beatles world right now is that a John Lennon biopic is nearing its pre-production launch.

Still untitled, the Lennon movie would be the first real authorized big screen biography of a Beatle. The movie is produced by Yoko Ono with her son Sean Ono Lennon. Julian Lennon is on board and so are the Beatles as an entity.

Anthony McCarten, who wrote the ginormous hit about Freddie Mercury and Queen, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” has apparently finished the screenplay and it’s set.

The movie will be “mostly” John solo songs although it will include five key Lennon Beatles songs, I am told. The producers have access to all Beatles songs if they desire.

I’m told that the Lennon film will be quite different than the “Lennon” musical Ono produced many years ago on Broadway, which flopped. This one will be the whole story. embracing Lennon’s youth. his time with the Beatles, and even his famous 18 month “Lost Weekend” when he left Ono for May Pang, who rescued Lennon from going over the edge before he returned to Ono.

Sources say Pang shouldn’t be worried about being minimized over glossed over in this movie. “She’s really celebrated,” said an insider.

Next project is attaching a director and a star. “Bohemian” director Dexter Fletcher, who also did such a good job on “Rocketman,” is certainly in the mix once he finishes “Sherlock Holmes 3” with Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law. Who should play Lennon? We’ll have to wait and see…as well as Brian Epstein, Cynthia Lennon, John’s mother, Julia, and the famous Aunt Mimi, not to mention the other Fabs, Yoko, and so on.
