Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein Movie Will in Black & White, and in Color

0

“Maestro” is the biopic of composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, starring and directed by Bradley Cooper. Carey Mulligan plays Bernstein’s wife, Felicia. Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke co-star.

We got pictures from the set today and guess what? The movie is in both black & white, and in color, just like “The Wizard of Oz.” Cooper plays Lenny as a young man and an older one, and looks pretty convincing in each.

Could this finally be Netflix’s Best Picture? No less than Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese are executive producers. If this isn’t it, I’d say throw in the towel. “Maestro” will get a release and a huge Netflix Oscar campaign later this year.

“Harry’s House” Robbed by “Top Gun” Soundtrack as Box Office Hit, Lady Gaga Single Goes to Number 1

0

“Harry’s House” has been robbed!

After one week in release, Harry Styles’ new album rocketed to number 1 last week and sold half a million copies by last Friday.

But fame is fleeting. The new number 1 on iTunes is the soundtrack to “Top Gun Maverick” which features Lady Gaga’s hit single, “Hold My Hand.” The single is number 2 on iTunes. (It would be number 1 but Kate Bush’s old hit, “Running Up That Hill” is at the top spot thanks to inclusion in “Stranger Things” Season 4.)

The “Top Gun” soundtrack is not only number 1 it’s also number 3 with a special expanded edition. And the only original “Top Gun” soundtrack album has returned, and gone to number 4 featuring the painful Berlin hit, “Take My Breath Away.”

Over on amazon, “Maverick” is number 5, where Harry has stayed in Style at numbers 2 and 3 with his regularly priced CD and his $31.97 LP.

(Video) Stranger Things Season 4 Opens with A Massacre of Children, and a Warning from Netflix Because of Uvalde

0

It’s not like Netflix needed any more trouble this month.

“Stranger Things,” Season 4 opens with a 9 minute sequence in which all but one of the children being tested in the Hawkins Lab by Dr. Brenner is massacred. In light of the Uvalde, Texas killings, this is poor timing to say the least.

Netflix has added a warning to the start of the episode. But even so, if you watch it. and it’s free on YouTube for all to see, it’s quite startling. There’s also the suggestion that “11” (Millie Bobby Brown) is responsible for the killings. The Duffer Brothers could not have known that Uvalde would happen, but the scene is very graphic. There have been plenty of other school shootings before this season was filmed. I guess no one thought this would be a bad idea.

The rest of “Stranger Things” has dropped on Netflix, and it’s very, very long. Each episode is the length of a movie. I was happy with the end of Season 3, but you know, why stop there when you can milk something til it’s exhausted?

Top Gun is Top Movie: “Maverick” Scores Record Memorial Day Weekend Numbers — and Then Some

0

If you’re keeping track, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” was the Memorial Day king up til now. The Johnny Depp blockbuster scored $114 million over three days, and $139 million over the four day weekend in 2007.

But now we welcome “Top Gun: Maverick,” which cleared its first hurdle today and will take the second one tomorrow.

Right now the three day total is $124 million, ten million more than “Pirates.” At that rate, the four day total should come in around $150 million. Yowza! Add to that $124 million that’s already come in from other stops around the world.

Woody Allen to Publish First Collection of Stories, Essays in 15 Years Including 10 New Pieces

Some good news: Circle June 7th. That’s the day Woody Allen will publish his first new collection of stories and essays in 15 years.

I’m very excited to report about “Zero Gravity,” which will include uncollected pieces from The New Yorker plus 10 new ones composed especially for this book. Fans of Woody’s earlier humor collections like “Without Feathers,” “Getting Even,” and “Side Effects” will be as thrilled as I am to hear this news.

Some of the titles include “Buffalo Wings Woncha Come Out Tonight,” “When Your Hood Ornament Is Nietzsche,” and “Growing Up in Manhattan.”

Woody has made 49 films including two recent ones, “A Rainy Day in New York” and “RIfkin’s Festival.” He’s written a 50th film which he hopes to shoot in Paris soon, and has a play in the works as well.

UPDATE: In Real Time Sales, Kellyanne Conway’s Book Is Dropping Steadily on Amazon.com

0

Books by Trump supporters and confidantes, former employees at the White House are not selling very well.

Chief lackey and lying flack Kellyanne Conway released a memoir this week called “Here’s the Deal.” It’s number 28 35 45 74 as of Tuesday among all books on amazon.com and number 40 161 on Barnes and Noble’s website. Conway has stayed loyal to Trump in the book, not criticizing him, but has thrown husband George under the Twitter train. There’s a limited audience for this kind of propaganda. We’ll see next week what the hard sales numbers are.

We do know the numbers for Dr. Deborah Birx’s book about her time working with Dr. Anthony Fauci for Trump. NPD Bookscan says she sold 4,200 copies of “Silent Invasion,” which isn’t much but it’s a lot considering Birx was totally complicit with the Trump team. She was known for wearing scarves but not much for medical professionalism.

The book is number 3,633 on amazon.com.

When Trump suggested that everyone should use Clorox or ultraviolet light to cure COVID, Birx just nodded head. Who would give her money now for a book? Or Conway? Even Republicans have to pay for gas and groceries.

The real book we’re waiting for would be from Claudia Conway, when she turns 21 and can tell us what was really going on in her parents’ home during the last year of Trump in the White House. I hope she’s got journals hidden away somewhere!

Cannes Palme d’Or Goes to Ruben Ostlund for 2nd Time, Elvis’s Granddaughter Wins Prize for First Film

0

The Cannes Film Festival prizes have been awarded this evening, wrapping up the 75th anniversary experience.

The winner if Ruben Ostlund for “Triangle of Sadness.” It’s Ostlund’s second Palme d’Or.

The Baz Luhrmann movie, “Elvis,” wasn’t in competition. But get this: Elvis’s granddaughter, won Best First Film for co-directing “War Pony” with Gina Gammell. Riley Keough is the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley and an accomplished actress already. Maybe a little of Elvis’s magic sprinkled down on her.

Two movies tied for second place. “Stars At Noon,” directed Claire Denis and assailed by most critics, and “Close,” directed by Lukas Dhont.

The 75th Cannes fest sounds like it was lively and fun, with plenty of little controversies and several occasions to mutter “Sacre bleu!” at edgy filmmaking. But that’s what it’s supposed to be!

Irony: “American Idol” 2nd Place HunterGirl Out-Charts Winner Noah Thompson on iTunes

Isn’t this the way we thought it would go?

Last Sunday, HunterGirl (real name Hunter Wolkonowski) lost “American Idol” in the final moments to Noah Thompson. She should have won. He was fine, but bland. They are each country artists.

On Tuesday both singers released singles. And now who’s ahead on iTunes?

HunterGirls’s “Red Bird” is number 10. Thompson’s “One Day Tonight” is number 11.

It was pretty clear on Sunday that HunterGirl would be one in a long line of “Idol” so called losers who would do better than the winner.

Broadway: “Funny Girl” Star Beanie Feldstein Keeps Missing Shows, Giving Understudy Julie Benko a Surprise Showcase

0

It pains me to say this. But there’s some trouble at “Funny Girl.”

I’m a big fan of Beanie Feldstein, who plays Fanny Brice, the star role created decades ago by Barbra Streisand.

But at today’s matinee understudy Julie Benko — said to be quite good — will be playing the part. She also filled in this past Wednesday at the matinee, and all of last weekend’s three shows.

Benko also subbed for Beanie the first weekend after the show opened. Ms. Feldstein went to a wedding.

The missed shows are giving Benko a great showcase. But they’re also begging the question of what’s going on at “Funny Girl”?

The musical revival was snubbed by the Tony Awards in all categories excepted Jared Grimes as featured actor in a musical. The fact that Beanie was ignored is really criminal: she’s excellent and deserved the nomination.

Are the missed performances because of disappointment? Allergies? Allergies to the Tony Awards? COVID (probably not, because the absences are spotty).

Beanie’s got to remember that People who Love People Are the Luckiest People, and she’s very Lucky to have that job. The audience is buying tickets to see her. They don’t care about the Tony nominations.

As for Benko, there are plenty of Broadway stories about understudies who took over the main roles and became famous. Two notable examples: Michele Lee in “How to Succeed in Business” and Shirley MacLaine in “Pajama Game.” The departures of the leads turned out to be career making for those ladies. So Julie Benko, just hold on.

“Top Gun Maverick” Takes $32 Million Friday Looks Toward Tom Cruise’s Biggest Opening Weekend Ever

0

“Top Gun Maverick” will give Tom Cruise his biggest opening weekend everf, and his first $100 million ever.

Last night “Maverick” took in $32 million. Add to Thursday previews and we have an official opening night of $51 million. The movie is pointed to a $120 mil opening three day weekend.

That might be a little lower than expected. But for Cruise, who is not a traditional box office king, it’s great news. It’s especially good in the post-pandemic climate with audience still sketchy about hitting theaters.

So the movie is making its money back quickly, and Cruise, who likely has a huge stake in gross profits and dollar one, can afford to heap money on Scientology now down in Clearwater, Florida. Thank Xenu! Also thank director Joseph Kosinski, Christopher McQuarrie, Jerry Bruckheimer, and a very talented cast.
