House of the Dragon Opening Credits Have “Thrones” Theme Music, Look: Branding or Laziness?

The opening of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” has the same opening music and similar look to “Game of Thrones.”

Is this branding or laziness?

It’s all very odd because our press screener didn’t include the opening, which didn’t appear in the first episode even in the on air version. It’s like they couldn’t figure out what to do, so they threw this together.

Fans on line were outraged. For all this money, HBO couldn’t come up with something new and exciting?

The similarities are a mistake, I feel. The new opening does nothing to differentiate this show from the original one. Is that the point? Shouldn’t “HOD” have its own identity? Yes!

I remember in the past, you always looked forward to the spin off shows’ themes, whether it’s a “Star Trek” series, or “Rhoda,” or, for those of us old enough, “The Girl from UNCLE.”

I hope by season 2, HBO can come up with something more creative.

Taylor Swift Drops News In Beautifully Executed PR Stunt: New Album Called “Midnights” Coming October 21st

0

Taylor Swift’s new album will be released on October 21st.

It’s called “Midnights.” She told the VMA audience news was coming at midnight. I mean…

The album hit two weeks after she makes a movie appearance in David O. Russell’s new film, “Amsterdam.”

Coincidence? There are no such things as coincidences in Taylor Swift’s well planned world.

We sat through three hours of the VMAs tonight not to see who won, but in a surprise twist for a Marvel movie like end credits scene. That’s when Swift dropped news of the new album.

Brilliant marketing, the whole thing. The album is called Midnights, again so great.

Taylor Swift Announces New Album on Cynical Night of Marketing at MTV’s VMA’s

0

My hat is off to Taylor Swift and whoever coordinates her marketing. It is a thing of beauty.

Taylor hung around all night at MTV’s VMA Awards, sat primly in the front row, and accepted two awards that were clearly pre-arranged and she knew all about.

Every artist who won a VMA was pre-arranged. That itself was a cynicist’s wet dream.

But then, Swift, winning Video of the Year, conveying mild surprise, announced her new album would be released on October 21st. “And more details at midnight.”

I can hardly wait.

I wondered why she was hanging around this low rent event, watching other stars like Lizzo and Harry Styles, pick up their pre-arranged awards. What, I wondered, is in this for her?

It was all about the new album announcement, of course. So well conceived and executed. I always like it when she tells the fans, “Well I can tell you now” as if it just came to her. “This will be our little secret.”

Brava! Taylor has outwitted everyone. Whatever news she drops at midnight — on social media, her website, whatever — will now get maximum attention even at this late hour.

To Taylor, a toast: she is the rare artist who has learned to combine business and art. We learned this when she went after her master recordings, caused her fans to reject her old records, then she re-recorded everything and they bought all the records again. And now, this. Breathtaking!

To be continued…

VMAs: Johnny Depp NOT in the Room Where it Happened, But Anyone Who Is There Wins an Award

0

MTV’s Video Music Awards are upon us like a migraine headache.

Live from the Prudential Center, the VMAs at about the halfway are the usual ridiculous Halloween show.

Johnny Depp was not there in person. He taped a couple of video inserts that the production loaded into the animated head of their Moon Man. It was embarrassing and stupid. He looked pathetic. If he really wanted to do something there, he should have gone to the show. These kids don’t know who he is unless he’s dressed like a pirate.

And then there are the awards: Any star who shows up wins something. The awards pre-arranged. Harry Styles won Album of the Year and sent in a pre-taped speech.

Adele lost Album of the Year. It was a big mistake letting her “30” album into that category. The takeaway is “Adele lost.” It does look like Sony is going to throw its weight behind Harry Styles “Harry’s House” for the Grammys. Adele is out in the cold.

Why is LLCool J hosting this show? He was finally relieved from his Grammy hosting duties after too many years. Well, MTV is owned by Viacom, which owns CBS, which airs LLCool J’s “NCIS Los Angeles.” His agent really deserves an award of his own.

Nicki Minaj’s husband is a convicted sex offender, so she didn’t thank him (I don’t think) nor is he there. She thanked their baby son, named Papa Bear. Just beautifully horrifying.

We are so far from music, it’s not funny. But it’s been a long, long time and we should be used to it. They actually have a contest going on called “Name that Sample.” LOL. Pathetic

Highlight of the night: Red Hot Chili Peppers, the only actual musicians present.

“House of the Dragon” Episode 2: Don’t Miss King Viserys Play “The Bachelor” And Give His Final Rose

0

Lots of plotting and scheming tonight on “House of the Dragon.” King Viserys, whose wife died in childbirth last week (along with the baby) gets to be “The Bachelor.” Watch him give his final rose. And just like on “The Bachelor,” his decision causes some upset. Paddy Considine is excellent at steering this big, unwieldy ship.

A much better episode than the opener, probably because we’re getting to know these characters, Episode 2 could not have better production values. Old Westeros was a lot nicer than the one we came to know in “Game of Thrones.” But there’s still no cell service. The design, cinematography, lighting, is the most lavish I’ve ever seen. You’ll love the young ladies’ scene in the church among the candles. Brilliant.

Yes, there are dragons, and we get to see them in action tonight. Plus Milly Alcock really comes into her own as Rhaenyra Targaryen, antecedent of our beloved Dany. I’d be curious to see all the generations between them. These girls have dragon flying in their genes!

Some of “House of the Dragon” feels like we’re coming in mid-series and not at the beginning. There are already so many feuds, wars, disputes, and so on there’s no time for a little fun. I hope these Targs and even their rivals get a chance to kick back and whore around a little, have a drink. Right now they are so damn serious.

Great episode, very moving. Hardcore fans will love it.

“Manifest” Returns for First Part of Season 4 to Netflix on November 4th: What Happened May Be Answered, a Little

0

I told you 13 months ago exclusively that “Manifest” — which NBC cancelled — was not over by a long shot.

Netflix picked up the show, to the delight of its ardent fans for two more seasons. Otherwise, the series would have ended on a cliffhanger.

Now I can tell you “Manifest” will return with Part 1 of Season 4 on November 4th. Season 4 of will be released in two parts consisting of 10 episodes each.

Maybe we’ll start to get some answers about what happened to all these people! If only NBC hadn’t rocked the boat so Dick Wolf could get a whole night of “Law & Order.” Now “SVU” has lost its EP and one of its stars, “Organized Crime” lost its EP and is trying to figure itself out, and the returned classic show lost its star.

Anyway, here’s what Netflix has to say in a press release:

“When Montego Air Flight 828 landed safely after a turbulent but routine flight, the crew and passengers were relieved. Yet in the span of those few hours, the world had aged five years — and their friends, families and colleagues, after mourning their loss, had given up hope and moved on. Now, faced with the impossible, they’re all given a second chance. But as their new realities become clear, a deeper mystery unfolds and some of the returned passengers soon realize they may be meant for something greater than they ever thought possible in this emotionally rich, unexpected journey into a world grounded in hope, heart, and destiny.

“Season 4 Synopsis: Two years after the brutal murder of Grace turned their lives upside down, the Stone family is in shambles as a devastated Ben continues to mourn his wife and search for his kidnapped daughter, Eden. Consumed by his grief, Ben has stepped down from his role as co-captain of the lifeboat, leaving Michaela to captain it alone, a near impossible feat with the passengers’ every move now being monitored by a government registry. As the Death Date draws closer and the passengers grow desperate for a path to survival, a mysterious passenger arrives with a package for Cal that changes everything they know about Flight 828 and will prove to be the key to unlocking the secret of the Callings in this compelling, mind-bending, and deeply emotional journey.”

Box Office Update: Few RSVP’s for “The Invitation,” “Three Thousand Years” Snuffed in 3 Days

0

It was an alarming pre-Labor Day weekend for the box office.

The number 1 movie was “The Invitation.” There were very few RSVPs as the poorly reviewed horror film made just $7 million — one of the lowest number 1 debuts in history.

The rest of the list isn’t very impressive. MGM-United Artists Releasing totally blew whatever opportunity it had for “Three Thousand Years of Longing” from “Mad Max” director George Miller. In three days, those three thousand years were were snuffed out. Total take in a pretty wide release: $2,876,000. A lot of money was lost. There are plenty of special effects, Miller isn’t cheap and neither are Tilda Swinton or Idris Elba. Another big flop from the studio Amazon just bought. Maybe they’ll move it over to Amazon Prime fast.

The re-release of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” made over $1 million in just 255 theaters. It did better than A24’s “Bodies Bodies Bodies” which died in 2,041 locations. Bury those bodies already.

Broadway: Tony Nominee for “A Chorus Line,” Robert Lupone, Passes Away At 76, Brother of Patti

0

Robert Lupone, co-director of the MCC Theater in Manhattan, has passed away after a three year battle with Pancreatic cancer. He was 76.

Lupone was the brother of Patti Lupone, and a star in his own right. He was an actor, director and producer of note in New York with lots of TV and theater credits. He co-founded the Manhattan Class Company 40 years ago.

He received a Tony nomination for playing Zach in the original production of “A Chorus Line.”

“Sopranos” fans will remember Lupone as “Dr. Bruce Cusamano” from a half dozen episodes. He was also a regular performer on “Law & Order SVU” and the original show, as well as from every single New York soap opera including “Another World” and “All My Children.”

Lupone also had 17 Broadway credits including playing Zach in the original version of “A Chorus Line.”

Condolences to his family and friends. This is a real loss for the New York theater world.

Britney Spears’ Instagram Account Wiped as She Poses Nude to Celebrate Elton John Hit

0

I wish I wish I wish I could post the nude pictures of Britney Spears that she put on her Instagram account.

But now the account is gone. I have the pictures, but Google will censor them in a nano second. You’ll have to go to her Twitter account and she if they’re still up.

I’m not sure if Instagram took the account down, or someone in her camp.

The pictures are to celebrate her number 1 hit with Elton John, a remix of “Tiny Dancer” called “Hold Me Closer.”

I’m sorry, it’s great fun but it’s also pornography. Nothing wrong with that. But Britney is the mother of two teenage boys who have already voiced their unhappiness with her behavior.

Spears has always been an exhibitionist. It’s part of her mental illness. Her so called fans think she was treated punitively with a conservatorship. But any 40 year old woman who would subject her kids to this is disturbed.

Okay, I’ll try one picture here and see what Google does. This one is not to bad, It’s pulled from a come-hither video she put up on Twitter. The other picture, I don’t how I could publish it.

PS No, I tried, WordPress wouldn’t do it, and Google obviously. So you’ll find them all over the internet. Try the Daily Mail.

Sad Box Office: “The Invitation” Will Set a Low Record, United Artists Releasing Dumps George Miller Movie

0

We’re in the Dead Zone of the annual box office. The summer hits are lingering and whatever’s new, no one wants to see.

“The Invitation” is a panned horror film from Sony that will make far less than $10 million this weekend. It will still be number 1, but will set a record low for films that opened at the top of the box office. Sad!

Even sadder is the MGM-United Artists Release of George Miller’s new film. “Three Thousand Years of Longing” isn’t even reporting Friday numbers because they were so embarrassing.

This was a Cannes film with Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba but UAR, which has the worst publicity department in 120 countries, just dumped it out the window. It’s in a lot of theaters but no one’s going to see it consequently. This follows the UAR strategy of blowing movie after movie from “Respect” to “Licorice Pizza” to “Flag Day” to “Cyrano.” The list is long. If UAR hadn’t been handed the last James Bond movie on a platter, they’d be dead. As it is, they screwed that up, too, with just $160 million total. The last Daniel Craig as 007 movie should have done $200 million.
