41 Years Later, The Go-Go’s Would Like a Second Shot on “Saturday Night Live”

0

Well, this could be a first.

In 1981, The Go-Go’s performed on “Saturday Night Live” and it was a mess. They were more than a little tipsy and it showed. The girls performed their very big hits, “Our Lips are Sealed” and “We Got the Beat.” But the reception was not positive and they never returned.

This week, “SNL” is asking fans on Twitter to say who they’d like to see host and be musical guests on the upcoming 48th season. A lot of people have rallied for Carol Burnett, 89, to host.

But the best response came from the Go-Go’s. “Can we get a do-over?” they ask. And why not? After 41 years, let them come back. They’re in the Rock Hall, they had a Broadway musical. Their popularity has endured.

Hey, Lorne, give them a second chance!

Mixed Reviews at Venice for Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise” with Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig

0

Reviews coming in this afternoon are a mixed bag for “White Noise.”

Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s 1985 novel is proving difficult to embrace for the critics at the Venice Film Festival. The movie will also open the New York Film Festival but Netflix is not showing in Toronto.

Some of the reviews include a letter grade of B from Indie Wire. Variety’s Owen Glieberman can’t seem to decide what’s going on. He kind of concludes, after summarizing the film: “We no longer buy what we’re seeing, even as we’re told, explicitly, what it all means. The film ties itself into knots to explicate the bad news.”

From the UK, Robbie Collin of the Telegraph writes: “Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s darkly funny 1985 novel is like a Spielberg film having a nervous breakdown – in a good way.”

The only real rave is from Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian, who gave it five stars. But David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter, after waffling, concludes: “The feeling remains that Baumbach is more in command with character-driven material than with this kind of accelerated absurdist plotting, which works to the extent it does in part thanks to Danny Elfman’s dark funhouse score, an exuberant return to vintage form.”

So, we’ll see, I guess, in a month or so when “White Noise” comes to New York. I’m still looking forward to it, especially with the an ending dance sequence that all the reviews are crazy about.

Spotify’s Most Streamed Song in the US This Summer: 1985 Kate Bush Hit from “Stranger Things”

0

What year is it? 1985? The most streamed song on Spotify this summer was Kate Bush’s “Running Up that Hill.” The song took off because it was featured in the Netflix series, “Stranger Things.”

But its popularity went past that novelty because the song is terrific and always has been. In 1985, Kate Bush couldn’t get past cult status because US radio blocked her. It’s nice to see a quality record come back stronger than ever.

Monday’s Box Office Hit New Low in the Post-Pandemic Era, No Film Made Over $535,000

0

Monday the box office looks like it hit a record low.

No film on the list made more than $533,000. The number 1 film was “The Invitation” with just $533,295.

As far as I can tell, it’s the lowest cumulative box office in the post-pandemic era. It may be worse than that if you omit the two pandemic years and look earlier. There is never a day when at least one film makes more than $1 million, even on the worst days.

Indeed, a year ago there were two films at the top of the box office on August 30, 2021. They were “Candyman” with almost $1.8 million and “Free Guy” with $1.2 million. The latter had been in release for three weeks

Lack of product all summer has finally piled up on the studios. They’ve sent too many films to streaming, as well. It’s one thing to have hit series like “Stranger Things” or “Only Murders.” But this week a Kevin Hart comedy went to streaming that could easily have been in theaters.

The only other new movie of the weekend, “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” a flop, made just $300,000 in over 2,400 theaters. If only MGM-United Artist Releasing had bothered to inform anyone that it was playing, maybe someone would have gone.

Now the box office will limp through Labor Day weekend and the next two weekends until September 16th when “The Woman King” starring Viola Davis comes thundering into 3,000 or more locations. Then a new season will begin.

TV: When “The Goldbergs” Returns, Jeff Garlin’s Murray Will Have Been Dead a While

0

When “The Goldbergs,” a show you’ve never watched, returns next month for a 10th season, Jeff Garlin’s Murray will have been dead a few months. They don’t even sit shiva for him.

It’s unclear if Garlin, who stars on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” knows or cares.

“The Goldbergs” showrunner, Alex Barrow, tells Entertainment Weekly: “I’ve had a conversation with Jeff and he’s aware that he’s not being replaced. The truth is, I don’t know if he knows what his fate is, but I’m assuming he knows, would be the answer to that question. We haven’t had a subsequent conversation since the beginning of writing that he would have any specific clarity on that.”

Garlin was forced off “The Goldbergs” in its 9th season because someone in the cast thought he spoke inappropriately on the set. Garlin and the great George Segal were the only reasons to watch this show. Without them, there isn’t one.

I do hope Larry David somehow parodies this PC nonsense on “Curb” when that show returns for its 12th season to HBO. I’d love to see the fictional Goldberg family get chewed out Susie Essman.

MTV Cobbles Together Just Over 3 Mil Viewers for VMAs from 13 Different Channels

0

MTV pieced together jsut over million viewers on Sunday for the Video Music Awards. They came from 13 different channels including one on broadcast TV, the CW Network with 610,000.

Yesterday, however, MTV reported a higher number because they counted the pre-show red carpet. I must have excluded some channels no one actually knows about. I just went by the top 150 cable shows of the night.

Will there be delayed viewing? Maybe. But these were the people brave enough to endure 3 hours of weirdness that also included the Red Hot Chili Peppers playing the only music of the night, and Taylor Swift’s coordinated marketing plan to launch a new album.

All of the awards were pre-arranged, which was not explained to the audience and should be in violation of the FCC because they were on broadcast TV. All the “winners” know in advance, their performances and appearances are tied to the wins. All of the winners should also receive acting awards for pretending they were surprised.

The VMAs and other MTV Awards shows are always like Halloween balls, and this one didn’t fail in that regard.

The only misstep by an artist, I thought, was from Adele. Her management never should have allowed her “30” album to be included in Album of the Year, and then lose to Harry Styles. If she wants to win the Grammy in that category, this will now be a piece of baggage weighing her down. It does seem like Styles is set up to win big at the Grammys.

UPDATED Kelli Giddish Was First with “SVU,” Now Jesse Lee Soffer is Leaving a Dick Wolf Show, “Chicago PD”

0

Dick Wolf is downsizing, and fast.

First Kelli Giddish was pushed out of “Law and Order SVU” after 11 seasons in a salary negotiating stand off.

Now Jesse Lee Soffer, who’s been on “Chicago PD” for 10 seasons — since the beginning — is out.

Like Giddish, it appears Soffer was forced out. He wrote on Twitter: “This is sad but true. Just want all the fans to know how grateful I am. You guys are why we do it! It has been an honor. Love you all

Soffer plays Det. Jay Halstead. He’s the second star of the show behind Jason Beghe. Like Giddish he came to Wolf world after a hit run on a soap opera (“As the World Turns”).

Interestingly, both shows– “SVU” and “Chicago PD” — are on NBC. The network is threatening to wipe out the 10pm hour of programming, and soon. Since Wolf shows take up two full nights of NBC programming, Wolf would be severely affected by that decision.

Soffer said in a prepared statement to Variety: “I want to thank the incredible fans for their unwavering support during the past 10 years and want to express my deepest gratitude to Dick Wolf and everyone at Wolf Entertainment, Peter Jankowski, Matt Olmstead, Derek Haas, Michael Brandt, Rick Eid, Gwen Sigan, NBC, Universal Television, my fellow castmates and our incredible crew,” he said in a statement to Variety on Monday. “To create this hour drama week after week has been a labor of love by everyone who touches the show. I will always be proud of my time as Det. Jay Halstead.””

So who’s next? The modus operandi here seems to be get the longest tenured, highest paid actors out of these shows. It’s a lot like Shonda Rhimes’s “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Someone should hire Giddish and Soffer for a new police show. You know, Paul Sorvino never forgave Wolf for ditching him after 1 1/2 seasons on “Law & Order.” Over the years, Wolf played all kinds of games with actors on his shows no matter how popular they were.

Monica Lewinsky Gives Witty Answer to Twitter Question Same Night Bill Clinton’s on TV at US Open

0

If nothing else, Monica Lewinsky has good comic timing.

On Twitter she read a random question from a pedestrian account called @AMythicWitch. The question was “Tell us a true story from your life that sounds made up”

Lewinsky, from her verified account, wrote, simply: “Pass”

Indeed. Lewinsky’s true story has now haunted her for 25 years and will probably go on for another twenty five.

It’s likely that Lewinsky, like everyone else tonight was watching Serena Williams’ match at USTA Forest Hills. And there in stands was her old friend, Bill Clinton, chatting away with noted sex expert Dr. Ruth Westheimer. They were in a very animated conversation. You could hear the world at large howling with laughter.

And who retweeted Monica’s answer? Why Amanda Knox, of course, who was convicted of killing a man in Italy, saw the verdict overturned, and a movie made about it all with Matt Damon.

HBO Says “Dragon” Ratings Increased 2% in Second Week of Sunday Night Viewing

0

HBO says linear viewing of the second episode “The House of the Dragon” was up 2% from last week.

That’s 200,000 people, because the first week was 10 million. The second is 10.2 million.

The channel says with delayed viewing, 25 million watched the first episode over 7 days.

According to Nielsen, around 2 million watched the first episode just on HBO on Sunday night. The rest would come from HBO Max and streaming.

Last night’s episode’s actual numbers will be out tomorrow, at least those for HBO. HBO Max and streaming doesn’t publish numbers.

Still, we know that “Dragon” is a hit. Barely 10 million people watched network TV Sunday night. What were they doing?

PS Early numbers for MTV’s VMA Video Music Awards were 610,000 on the CW Network. The rest of the totals will come in Tuesday for all the MTV cable channels. That’s pretty much the same as last year, which was way down to an all time low.

Report: “The Conners” Cuts Michael Fishman (DJ) And His On Screen Daughter, Likely to Cut Costs

0

DJ Conner is leaving home.

There’s a report today in TV Line that Michael Fishman is out at “The Conners.” So is his daughter, played by Jayden Rey as Mary Conner.

It’s not a surprise. Neither actor has been in many episodes as regulars. The show’s ratings have dropped, and the costs get higher for ABC as they’re paying big guns John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, and Sara Gilbert plus a large supporting cast and Katey Sagal in a recurring role.

This will likely be the last season for “The Conners.”

DJ’s absence could be explained this way: he’s gone looking for his brother, Jerry Garcia Conner, who’s never been mentioned in the spin off. Jerry was born to Roseanne and Dan at the end of “Roseanne.” No one knows what happened to him. Maybe DJ can solve that mystery.

Jerry Garcia may also know where Aunt Jackie’s son, Andy, might be living. He’s also MIA since the new series began.
