UPDATED “Shazam 2” $125 Mil Bust at Box Office Even with No Competition, Star’s Perceived Anti-Vax Tweets and Jordan Peterson Comments on Joe Rogan Show Didn’t Help

0

SUNDAY MORNING: “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” made $30.5 million for the weekend, a low for Warner’s/DC and far below the original film. You have to think that there was more going on here than “bad marketing” or the film wasn’t as good as the first one. The lead actor speaking out and aligning himself with right wing positions did this film in. Period.

SATURDAY MORNING: It’s a no go for “Shazam 2.”

Warner Bros’ sequel to the surprise 2019 hit had a very disappointing take off on Friday. Including Thursday previews, total for the opening was just over $11 million. Another $16 mil for Saturday and Sunday won’t bring it to $30 mil for the weekend even if kids are dumped into theaters.

The original “Shazam” took in $56 million, so the fall off is spectacular. Was it something star Zachary Levi said? His anti-vax stand and otherwise right wing positioning, which he expressed on Joe Rogan’s ultra conservative podcast, obviously didn’t help.

What happened? Levi was a benign figure in showbiz. He was popular from the “Chuck” TV series, from “Mrs. Maisel,” and a nice turn on Broadway in a musical. Maybe he knew the new Warner’s brass weren’t continuing with a third “Shazam.” He certainly, as used to say, hanged himself on his own petard.

Justin Bieber’s Been Smiling Without Issue in Instagram Posts for Weeks: So Why Is His Tour Still Cancelled? Why Was New Video Removed So Quickly?

0

For a short time in the last day, Justin Bieber posted a video demonstrating that his health is fine, his Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is cured, and he could easily have fulfilled all the concert dates he cancelled this year. There were 70 in all through this month, plus a raft more internationally and more in 2024.

Then the video disappeared from his Instagram. Luckily, a lot of media outlets downloaded it and uploaded it to their sites.

So what’s going on here? Bieber has been posting stills to Instagram for weeks that have shown him partying, frolicking, and otherwise having a grand time away from his tour. His bout of Ramsay Hunt, which paralyzed his face last year, seems to have been resolved a long time ago. Is it possible Bieber just didn’t want to complete his tour?

Not only that, Bieber performed a new single with rapper Don Toliver on stage at Rolling Loud on March 5th. The video is below. He looks very well, indeed. Ticket holders to all those cancelled shows must wonder what is going on?

And why did this new video clip disappear so quickly? Could the insurer of his tour have gotten wind of it? They paid out a lot of money when Bieber cancelled. The cancellations also caused headaches all over the world for venues and ticket holders — not to mention all the crew and band it requires to put on his shows.

Indeed, Bieber’s latest tour cancellation announcement came on February 28th. For two months he’d been posting pics to Instagram showing him in full smile, no issues. Just a cursory look at Bieber’s Instagram from mid-January shows that his paralysis– which was no doubt serious– was well in the rear view mirror. There are plenty of other photos from earlier this year, like the one below.

There are a lot of questions here with few answers. But when I see headlines on BuzzFeed like “Justin Bieber Regains Mobility in His Face,” I have to wonder if no one is paying attention.

Sad Shock: Great Actor Lance Reddick Dies at 60 from Natural Causes, Star of “John Wick,” “The Wire” and Many Other TV Shows

Actor Lance Reddick has died at age 60 from what’s reported as natural causes.

A popular, smart, and hard working actor, Reddick was a regular presence on TV for years. He starred in “The Wire” for its entire run on HBO.

Reddick was in all four “John Wick” movies and was promoting the new one this past week. TMZ says he was found in his apartment in Studio City this morning. He leaves behind a wife and children. Condolences to them all.

Among Reddick’s long list of credits beside “The Wire” with 60 episodes is “Lost”– he played Matthew Abbadon in four episodes. He was very cool and mysterious on screen, but when you saw Lance Reddick coming you knew something interesting was going to happen. His death is really tragic.

His friend, Wendell Pierce, posted to Twitter: “A man of great strength and grace. As talented a musician as he was an actor. The epitome of class. An sudden unexpected sharp painful grief for our artistic family. An unimaginable suffering for his personal family and loved ones. Godspeed my friend. You made your mark here. RIP”

Pop: Taylor Swift Takes Number 1 on iTunes with Unreleased Single, And 3 More of Top 5 on the Chart

0

Taylor Swift is back. (Was she gone?)

Today Swift released four singles to iTunes and took over the top 5. One of the songs is totally new and unreleased. “All of the Girls You Loved Before” is an outtake from her “Lover” album and now it’s number 1.

The three other tracks are all re-records from other albums. Swifties lapped them up as if they were milk for kittens.

The reason for this onslaught is the beginning tonight of Taylor’s “Eras” tour in Glendale, Arizona.

Super Hero Disaster Eyed by Warner’s as $125 Mil “Shazam 2” Fails in Previews, Gets Rotten Reviews, Has Controversial Star

0

Uh oh. The whole Warner Bros-DC Comics world is an uproar anyway over the direction of their super hero movies, who’s running the show, etc.

Now they face a dire weekend as “Shazam: Fury of the Gods,” the sequel to a surprise hit from a couple of years ago, augurs for a disastrous weekend.

“Shazam 2” made just $3.4 million in previews last night. The first one made close to $6 mil on preview night only four years ago, and that was pre-pandemic.

The film also has rotten reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, teetering at 55% with reviewers and just 84% audience score. Whoops! How did that happen?

WB/DC is also having some PR difficulties after making director James Gunn, who directs Disney/Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” series, their chief. Now at DC, Gunn is cleaning house. He made himself the director of the next “Superman” movie and got rid of fan fave Henry Cavill. He’s also somehow ditched Ben Affleck as Batman. Fan boys know better than I about all this mishegos, but even Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins are out from Women Woman movies.

All this, plus Dwayne Johnson’s “Black Adam” won’t be back after failing to hit its box office goals.

Of course, part of the “Shazam 2” coming flop may have to do with star Zachary Levi. Back in January he appeared to be an anti-vaxxer, ripping Pfizer as “a real danger to the world.” On Joe Rogan’s right wing Spotify podcast, Levi also got in trouble for appearing to be anti-trans and a fan of right wing nut Jordan Peterson.

So this will be the final “Shazam” movie. Maybe Levi knew that and just let his conservative freak flag fly. Whatever the case, there will be little magic this weekend at the box office.

Friars Club Death Worse Than Thought: Lost Trademark Rights to Logo, Lost Battles with NLRB Over Former Staff Issues

Following up on my original story from last night about the Friars Club. Things are worse than thought. Not only is the club padlocked shut and closed. In December they lost the trademark right to their longstanding logo. According to websites that cover trademark news: “The current status of the PRAE OMNIA FRATERNITAS FRIARS CLUB filing is CONTINUED USE NOT FILED WITHIN GRACE PERIOD, UN-REVIVABLE.”

Ouch: Un-revivable.

To make matters worse — and how much worse could they be? — the National Labor Relations Board wrote to the Club on March 2nd that they’d lost a charge brought by the former staff of the Club . The letter can be seen here. It was written to Anthony Trompeta of the Friars from John D. Doyle, Regional Director of the NLRB. He says:

We have carefully investigated and considered your charge that UNITE HERE Local 6
Hotel, Restaurant, Club Employees & Bartenders Union has violated the National Labor
Relations Act. Decision to Dismiss: Based on that investigation, I have decided to dismiss your charge because there is insufficient evidence to establish a violation of the Act.

More to come, obviously, but none of it is good. The Friars had until yesterday to appeal the ruling. It’s unclear if they even bothered.

What a shame. RIP.

Oscars Wrap Up: Diana Ross Sings for Byron Allen, “Top Gun” and “Abbott” Publicists Win Awards, A24 is No Mystery to Us

0

Diana Ross– she’s a great singer but she’s a lot of trouble. On Sunday night she performed after the Oscars for media mogul Byron Allen at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The event raises money for the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. (Only Vanity Fair’s Oscar party is just for themselves. Elton John raises money for AIDS, etc.)

Guests included Howie Mandell, who emceed, as well as Caroline Rhea, Holly Robinson-Peete and Rodney Peete, Vivica A. Fox, Garcelle Beauvais, Tisha Campbell Martin, Yvette Nicole Brown, and the legendary Smokey Robinson.

Diana, ever difficult, didn’t let the charity take official photos or video. So we had to rely on TMZ sneaking a camera in so we could show you some of her performance. Who gives this woman advice? It’s always the worst!

TOP GUN MAVERICK and ABBOTT ELEMENTARY won the respective awards for Best Publicity Campaigns for movies and TV last Friday at the ICG Publicists Guild Awards at the Beverly Hilton. This is one of my favorite events of the season, where all the movie publicists get together and reminisce about how they drove journalists crazy all year! (Just kidding!)

Publicist of the Year went to Sarah Hull from Disney. Karen Chamberlain of Warner Bros, won the Les Mason Lifetime Achievement Award. The Press Award went to someone from “Entertainment Tonight” who didn’t show up when most everyone felt it should go to our pal, Jazz Tangcay of Variety. But that’s what awards are like!

There were terrific speeches from honorees like Quinta Brunson of “Abbott” and the famed Jerry Bruckheimer, of “Top Gun Maverick.” This year’s luncheon, held at The Beverly Hilton, was chaired by Tim Menke and Sheryl Main. “It was great to once again take time to celebrate publicists, especially this year at our 60th Annual Awards Luncheon. A big congratulations to all of today’s award nominees and recipients,” said Menke.

VARIETY reported that “Everything Everywhere” studio A24 is a mystery, its owners wouldn’t allow their pictures to be taken on the red carpet. A24 is no mystery to our readers. They start each awards season with the National Board of Review in their pocket. Exec David Laub is on the board, ensuring A24 films kick off the season with a ton of attention. (They got 7 mentions this year including Michelle Yeoh as Best Actress, which launched her Oscar campaign.) No one does anything about it no matter how often I write about it. The idiotic NBR has been exposed over and over and still gets studio attention. This should not be a mystery to Variety or any other trade paper.

Sad Obit: The Friars Club is Padlocked Shut, Closed After Years of Mismanagement and Malfeasance Comes End of Era

The Friars Club is closed.

It’s padlocked shut with a gate blocking the entrance.

In truth, the Friars Club has been gone for years. All that remains is the 1957 “monastery” built into a classic townhouse(originally constructed in 1904) at 57 East 55th Street, a grim tombstone to remember the halcyon years of Alan King, Larry King, Jerry Lewis, Frank Sinatra, Joan Rivers, Freddie Roman, Dick Capri, and so on.

The group that was once so vaunted long ago lost its 501 c3 status as a charity. The Friars used to raise money for philanthropies. Now they need a GoFundMe page and a rescue from the Landmarks Commission ASAP.

Gone are the roasts that became so famous that Ted Danson’s career was almost ruined at one when he wore blackface. No one who attended the famous roast at which Gilbert Gottfried repeated “The Aristocrats” has ever recovered from it.

But I began reporting on the financial malfeasance at the Friars Club in 2016, which led eventually to them being raided by the federal government. Down the line, the club’s president Michael Gyure was found guilty of fraud and tax evasion. He’s long gone. I reported that a sexual harassment claim was filed by the club’s long time receptionist and ultimately settled for around $1 million. The club refused to get rid of the person at the center of the suit, Bruce Charet, who is still with them.

Three years ago, just before the pandemic killed off inside dining and entertainment, the club — loaded with debt — suffered a burst water pipe that flooded the place. Renovations took place thanks to insurance. In the spring of 2021 I was invited over by new president Arthur Aidala, the defense attorney who counts among his clients Harvey Weinstein. The kitchen was closed. There was no hot food, just some cold hors d’ouevres. Aidala was very upbeat that a new day was coming including an outside restaurant operator who’d make the ground floor public.

That was two years ago. Months ago there was talk of private gatherings. No celebrities will set foot in the Friars Club thanks to the litany of people who’ve destroyed its reputation. The Club “fired” many beloved members, others quit. Once a famed pinnacle of success for comics and entertainers, it’s now a husk of itself.

What will happen? New York’s history is disappearing very quickly now. The famed 21 Club closed during the pandemic and there’s no sign of its return. The Friars Club is one of the last vestiges of the city’s dominance as a cultural force. But in the last two or three decades, the group was unable to attract contemporary comics like Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Letterman, Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, the “SNL” gang, etc.

PS The Friars Club has little to no social media. Its Twitter account hasn’t been used in three to four years, and there are no updates on Facebook.

Even with Huge Miley Cyrus Album, Sony Music Dwarfed Again this Week by Universal Music’s Morgan Wallen, Asian Pop Girl Group

0

Miley Cyrus is having a debut week, her biggest in a decade, with her new album, “Endless Summer Vacation.” Her single, “Flowers,” is the hit of the month.

But even with all this attention, Sony Music will come in at number three tomorrow with “Vacation.” No matter what they do they can’t compete with Universal Music Group.

Universal is huge right now with the new album from sort-of racist apologizer country singer Morgan Wallen. His new album, called One Thing at a Time, scored 500,000 copies last week and is looking at another 250,000 this week. The album has 36 tracks, most of which take up the entire streaming singles chart. People — some people, not me — are playing these songs over and over despite Wallen being heard using the “N word” on a home video last year. His fans don’t care!

UMG is also hot with an Asian Pop girl band with nine members called Twice. No, we only called them once, but they think it’s Twice. They will come in second for the week.

Miley is third in the race, with a projected 112,000 copies including streaming. “Endless Summer Vacation” is a pretty good pop album with some excellent tracks and a couple that sound re-assembled from old songs. But overall I’d give it an A- because it puts this excellent singer back on top of the game. Also, despite being shunted into teams of songwriter/producers who shouldn’t be there, Michael Pollack, and his “Flowers” partner Gregory Aldae Hein, have a few tracks. It’s too bad they were made to share their byline, but that’s the ignominious state of the music industry these days.

Let’s see what Sony can do with follow up singles after “Flowers.” They have a lot of opportunities with “Jaded,” the Brandi Carlile duet “Thousand Miles,” “Island,” and “Wonder Woman.” All of these are ready made for radio.

Broadway: No Room for “Room” As Adrienne Warren-Led Musical Version of Oscar Film Pulled for Lack of Dough

0

It’s not easy to put on a Broadway show, especially when it’s a new play with tricky marketing.

And so “Room,” the semi-musical play derived from the original novel but more closely associated with the movie that got Brie Larson an Oscar for Best Actress is suddenly not opening this season. (The movie had three other nominations in 2015 including Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay by Emma Donoghue, who wrote this version as well.)

In this version, the role of the young woman who’s been kidnapped and locked in a room by a maniac was to be played by the great Tony Award winner Adrienne Warren, of “Tina: The Musical” fame. Three time Tony nominee and three time Emmy nominee Kate Burton was also featured.

“In the midst of our rehearsals we were informed by one of our Lead Producers that due to personal reasons, they did not intend to fulfill their obligations to the production. Since being notified, the rest of the producing team has exhausted all possible avenues to keep the show on track, but the narrow timeline and economic shortfall created by this series of events has proven to be insurmountable,” said producer Hunter Arnold. “We are incredibly disappointed not to be able to open this remarkable production at this time and are especially heartbroken for our incredibly talented cast and creative team who were hard at work in the rehearsal room.”

Producers Sam Julyan and James Yeoburn stated, “We have been honored to share the story of ROOM since its world premiere in 2017 in London and its subsequent productions in Dublin, Scotland, and Ontario.  We truly believe that today’s disappointing news will not be the end of ROOM on stage.”

Adrienne Warren is one of Broadway’s brightest new lights. Burton is a veteran actress of the highest regard. They will each bounce back quickly. But what a shame we won’t get to see them in this production — for now.
