“Creed III,” “Ant Man” Star Jonathan Majors’ Career in Peril After NYC Arrest for Alleged Domestic Abuse

0

Actor Jonathan Majors is in a world of trouble. His hot-as-a-pistol movie career is in peril– dire peril — after his arrest this past weekend.

Majors — accused by his girlfriend — was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court later Saturday on six counts of third-degree assault, three counts of third degree attempted assault and two counts of harassment.

Majors’ lawyer, Priya Chaudhry — she handles high profile cases for celebrity men accused by women of a variety of misdeeds — says the actor is innocent, she the proof, and it will all come out in their favor pretty soon.

Of course, the accusing girlfriend could withdraw her complaint, say she was mistaken, and take a nice hefty settlement under a non disclosure agreement. This happens all the time. If so, we’ll never know if Majors was innocent, or if the accuser was just looking for a payday.

In the meantime, Majors’ meteoric rise in the business has been tainted. His two big movies are already well into release, and have made their money. This scandal won’t hurt “Creed III” or “Ant Man 3.”

But it’s already involved the US Army ad campaign being pulled. Even if he’s exonerated, I don’t think we’ll be seeing Majors doing recruitment any time soon.

And then there’s his big Sundance movie, “Magazine Dreams,” in which he plays a deranged body builder. Disney Searchlight bought it for Christmas and Oscar release. How can this not come up in the interviews?

Disney has a lot invested in Majors. He’s part of the Marvel Universe. His Kang the Conqueror is in “Ant Man” and set to be the villain in two new “Avengers” movies. And now former classmates of Majors from his days at Yale and Juilliard are creeping out of the woodwork to decry him as a real life villain. So far their comments have only appeared in online blogs, but things could get worse before they get better.

As I wrote over the weekend, I met Majors at the Oscars. He was soft spoken and friendly. There was no indication of trouble coming, or the behavior that’s been whispered about online.

Remember– innocent until proven guilty means more now than ever.

PS The New York tabloids, particularly the Post, are curiously quiet. Why is that? In the past this would be raw meat thrown at lions.

Scorsese-DeNiro-DiCaprio Movie Set for October Release, Going to Cannes Along with Indiana Jones 5 (First Reported Here)

0

So here’s the big news: Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” starring Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio is going to Cannes. I told you that on February 20th. Cannes chief Thierry Fremaux confirmed it to Variety today. That’s nice. I told you five weeks ago.

Separately: The Scorsese movie, meanwhile, will open in limited release on October 6th, then hit Apple TV Plus two weeks later. Apple knows how to get a Best Picture Oscar. They beat Netflix to the punch as first streamer with Best Picture for “CODA” last year. They can do it again.

Back to the Variety interview: Fremaux also confirmed — as I reported on February 20th — that “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” will premiere on the Croisette, It’s an obvious choice since “Indiana Jones 4” debuted in Cannes, too.

Also, Fremaux indicates– and I think this is true, I’ve said so– the new Woody Allen movie will have a spot this year, too.

Fremaux says the Almodovar short film won’t open the festival. I reported that it would in that February 20th article. That was the plan then. I still think it’s a good idea. Opening night is elongated by the 90 min opening ceremony. A short film is just what the doctor ordered!

Anyway, we love Cannes but obviously what’s playing there is a minor concern compared to the real news. Still, I’ll keep you posted!

Broadway: Revived “Sweeney Todd” Scores a Triumph with Josh Groban, Annaleigh Ashford, “Stranger Things” Star Gaten Matarazzo, and 26 Piece Orchestra

0

Josh Groban, you know, has always wanted to be a rock star. With his gorgeous deep baritone, he’s released several hit albums trying to make modern pop music sway in his direction. A few seasons ago he went at last into a Broadway show, “Natasha, Pierre, and the Comet of 1812,” and found his calling — almost.

Tonight, he arrived in show business an overnight sensation after 25 years of success. He debuted in the title role of “Sweeney Todd,” Stephen Sondheim‘s masterpiece of a musical, first performed in 1979. This is the third revival, directed by Thomas Kail of “Hamilton” fame and co-starring Tony award winner Annaleigh Ashford, who last we saw was being punished by CBS on a terrible sitcom called “B Positive.” Also a Tony nominee for the musical “Kinky Boots,” Ashford has been waiting for her big moment.

So it’s a thrill to say that Groban and Ashford– in the much vaunted roles of Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and Mrs. Lovett, the devilish pie maker — come into their own at the same time. They sweep this majestic, operatic, melodic, funny, and dark musical up and carry it off as if they’ve won the lottery. And this was a tall order tonight considering two Sweeneys were in the audience — Len Cariou, the originator, who a Tony in 79 opposite the late Angela Lansbury; and Norm Lewis, who was sensational off Broadway in the famed Barrow Street Bake Shop production.

Still, they more than pulled it off thanks to Kail’s canny set up along with choreographer Steven Hoggett. “Sweeney Todd” has such a sturdy foundation that in each of its revivals, the new directors have been able to expand on Hal Prince‘s original work. Before this there was a version “in the round” at Circle in the Square; the Patti Lupone-Michael Cerveris entry with actors playing instruments. And of course the stripped down bakery version.

But Kail is smart. He sticks to Prince’s blueprint for the first act with just a few small changes (including, alas no sharp whistle to start the show or indicate Sweeney’s crimes), concentrating on telling the tale of Benjamin Barker and his quest to avenge his wife and daughter. He also lets the actors — not just Groban and Ashford but everyone including the phenomenal Gaten Matarazzo of “Stranger Things” fame, Tony winner Ruthie Ann Miles, and Broadway vet Nicholas Christopher in a breakout performance — do their magic respectively as Toby, the Beggar Woman, and Pirelli the snake oil salesman.

It’s in the second act that Kail lets loose. After all, we know he’s inventive, he directed “Hamilton.” Keeping Prince in mind he (with Hoggett’s help) starts updating several well known set pieces from the show. Let’s say, they’re “refreshed” so happily that the audience — at least night– cheered during several scenes including the opening of Act 2, the quest to rescue Johanna from Fogg’s mad house, and entire final sequence of events, which I would liken to side 2 of “Abbey Road.” From the time Sweeney loses it and kills his worst victim til the end, there isn’t a dry eye in the house. Kail has really made “Sweeney Todd” very moving as the dark story unravels toward its tragic ending.

I know this show as well as I know the way home. I was there three times in 1979, and I’ve seen all of the revivals, the bakery show, the one at the NY State Opera, and so on. (Forget the movie.) I’ve listened to this soundtrack a thousand times. And yet, there’s always something new. Kail really concentrated on the comedy for Ashford’s sake, and she steals the show with pratfalls and mannerisms that seem organic. Groban’s voice (like Lewis’s) is a whole character itself, and he receives a huge ovation in Act 1 for good reason. (The 26 piece orchestra is beyond compare– or criticism.) Special mention to Matarazzo, charged with singing “Not While I’m Around,” one of the great Sondheim songs of all time. His “Stranger Things” castmates will be agog. (One of them was there last night, red-haired Sadie Sink.)

So wow– won’t “Into the Woods” also be in Best Revival of a Musical this year? Two Sondheim shows! How could we be so lucky?

And just for fun, who else was in the audience but Christine Baranski, Jimmy Fallon, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tony winner Sutton Foster, director J.J. Abrams, Richard Kind, producer Daryl Roth, not to mention Kail’s Oscar nominated (four times!) wife Michelle Williams, her BFF Busy Phillips, three time Tony nominee Linda Emond, plus Tony Kushner, Tom Corson (head of Warner Bros. Records– he gets this soundtrack), Hamilton star Christopher Jackson.

Producer Jeffrey Seller took the stage after the curtain calls to introduce everyone who worked on this production — not just the cast, but the crew, the standby’s, the make up and hair people, costumers, etc. It was a pretty cool gesture, followed by Kail getting to take a bow and thank everyone.

The Tony’s are on June 11th. You’ll be seeing a lot of this crowd then!

Adele Wraps Vegas Run BUT Announces June Return, Concert Film, Fall Run at Caesar’s Palace — After Originally Cancelling All Her Shows!

0

Adele has discovered an easy way to make money and have fun at the same time.

The hit singer wrapped her run of 34 shows at Caesar’s Palace tonight– and she announced she’s coming back for more!

Adele will return in June, film the show for a concert movie, then come back in August and run “til the end of the fall.”

Why not? She’s making millions at Caesar’s. She doesn’t have to go anywhere. The fans come to her. The movie will rake in some good bucks, too.

Adele is our new Elvis. Crazy, too, since this all started with her cancelling 26 shows at the last minute. But now she’s got the rhythm going. She’s rolling in the deep!

Report: “Creed III” Star Jonathan Majors Arrested in NYC for Alleged Assault, Which His Rep Denies

0

Hey– innocent until proven guilty must be remembered here.

“Creed III” star Jonathan Majors was arrested in NYC today for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend. TMZ reported it and now other outlets are chiming. Majors has already been released.

TMZ says their sources say Majors and his girlfriend got into a spat coming back to Chelsea from a Brooklyn bar by cab. She tried to sneak a look at his phone to see who he was texting with and he allegedly put his hands on her.

What really happened? Hopefully a misunderstanding or miscommunication. Majors is hot right now with “Creed” and other projects like the new “Ant Man” movie.. He recently hosted “SNL” and he’s set for two “Avengers” movies, His Sundance film, “Magazine Dreams,” was picked by Searchlight as an Oscar 2023 contender.

On a personal note, I met him at the Oscars and he seemed like a genuinely nice guy.

A rep for Majors tells TMZ … “He’s done nothing wrong. We look forward to clearing his name and clearing this up.”

Friars Club Gets One Last Lick In with “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” Episode Showing Lapsed Trademark, Raunchy Roast

A whole lot of press people are watching the first eight episodes of the final season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The hit comedy returns for a 5th and final season on April 14th on Amazon Prime.

We’re not allowed to breathe a word of the plot or anything else until minutes before the show drops. So what I’m about to tell you is not about any of that. And there will be no spoilers.

But if you read this column you know I just told you last week that the vaunted Friars Club on East 55th St. is padlocked shut and closed, likely for good. The Club lost the trademark rights to its logo. It’s also no longer a registered charity. Decades of history have been squandered by the people who’ve pulled it apart. It’s very sad.

And then– a ha! — I’m watching a screener of “Mrs. Maisel” only to discover that in the sixth episode, the show shot inside the Club. They used the dining room, downstairs entryway, and the front door area. If the Friars gets pulled down one day, it’s now memorialized in “Mrs. Maisel” for a raunchy roast.

What did Amazon pay the remaining squanderers for this right? Someone got the money, and now it’s gone, baby, gone, trust me. But there it is, and so is the now un-trademarked logo hanging above the podium.

The Friars– the remaining people — may think this is a tribute to the Club, and it is. But it’s also a sly dig about how the Club has deteriorated into the mess it became.

I’m not allowed to say anything else, except: after five very good episodes, this is the “Maisel” Emmy show. There’s a lot more to it than the Friars, and the whole thing plays like a hit movie comedy. (One hint: there’s a nod to a Woody Allen classic.)

That’s it, for now. Circle April 14th. Or thereabouts, for more intel.

SUNDAY UPDATE: Keanu Reeves, Age 58, Having Biggest Box Office Hit in 20 Years with “John Wick 4” — $73.5 Mil Weekend!

0

SUNDAY MORNING: $73.5 MILLION for “John Wick 4.” It’s Keanu’s biggest hit since the 2003 “Matrix” movies, bigger than the last three “John Wick” movies by far. It’s an enormous success for the soft spoken, off the radar, polite, self-effacing Reeves. Congrats to him!

SATURDAY: This is really Keanu Reeves’s Excellent Adventure.

His “John Wick 4” is headed to an opening weekend of $71 million plus. That’s his biggest hit since 2003’s “Matrix” movies.

Keanu is 58 years old, although we think of him as eternally youthful from all his early movies, and the fact that he looks a lot younger than his age.

Last night, “John Wick 4” — the biggest hit in this series — made $20 million on top of a nearly $9 million preview night on Thursday. Fans want to see this movie, and they are going to it in droves.

Meanwhile, “Shazam 2” fell 80% last night from last Friday, a stunning drop off. The movie is basically dead at $38 million on a budget of $125 million. Also totally dead is “65” with Adam Driver from Sony Pictures. No one knows what it was so let’s not ask them.

Kanye West Re-Ups Anti-Semitism With Deranged Post about Jonah Hill and 21 Jump Street: Clueless and Stupid

0

So that’s it. Kanye West is sticking with anti-semitism.

West returned to Instagram over night to say that seeing the movie version of “21 Jump Street,” star Jonah Hill changed his mind about Jews.

He wrote “Watching Jonah Hill in 21 Jump street made me like Jewish people again. No one should take anger against one or two individuals and transform that into hatred towards millions of innocent people. No Christian can be labeled antisemite knowing Jesus is Jew. Thank you Jonah Hill I love you”

I’m sure Jonah Hill is thrilled that this idiot, demented and clueless, has come to this epiphany.

West, as always, should have kept his mouth shut. He’s deranged. No one can still be doing business with him, can they? All his business with various designers is kaput. Adidas is sitting on millions of dollars of Yeezy inventory that they’d be better off burning or just donating in the third world, where shoes are needed so desperately. No one will ever spend money on a Kanye West brand ever again.

PS See the post below. Comedian Jeff Ross, btw, is being facetious.

Like it Or Not: Grey’s Anatomy Returning for 20th Season Because ABC Has No New Ideas

0

Well, this was inevitable.

“Grey’s Anatomy” is coming back in the fall for a 20th season. Why? ABC has no new ideas, they might as well stick with this one even though the star is gone and the showrunner is leaving.

That’s right, you know Ellen Pompeo left already. Another actress who’s played a doctor for nine years is leaving, too. Showrunner Krista Vernoff lives in a mansion somewhere, so she’s done, too.

But “Grey’s” will return, nonetheless.

ABC treats the show like a daytime soap, and that works for them. People come and go, a few older characters remain for stability, but the bulk of the show rests on low paid newbie actors.

“Grey’s” finishes second to “Law & Order SVU” on Thursdays at 9, but they have to put something on the air!

When I think of it: I began watching “Grey’s Anatomy” when it launched in 2005 because I was trapped in a hotel room in Santa Maria, California covering the Michael Jackson trial. I never watched it again, in detail, and think how much has changed in the world.

PS Yesterday, a doctor I was talking to said I shouldn’t use “Grey’s Anatomy” as a reference for anything. I’m shattered!

The Ultimate Bruce Springsteen Show Takes Place Next Month, It’s Sold Out, and You’ve Never Heard of It (Neither Had I)

0

Bruce Springsteen is selling out his tour with E Street Band and everyone’s going crazy over it. Every show seems better than the last, and Bruce has never been in better form. New dates are being added all the time.

But there’s one Bruce show that may be the ultimate– L’Ultimo– that most fans don’t know about it and almost no one can attend. That’s a show on April 15th in West Long Branch, New Jersey at Monmouth University’s Pollak Theater.

The Pollak has a capacity of 714 seats. Tickets went on sale March 13th and presumably sold out instantly. The price of the tickets? Unknown, but likely more than a refrigerator and a little less than a Maserati. They’re meant to benefit the school via The Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music.

The inaugural “American Music Honors” will honor E Street Band impresario Steven van Zandt, plus Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Sam Moore, of Sam and Dave fame, and Darlene Love, who rose to fame with the Phil Spector Wall of Sound, as well as country blues-rock-singer songwriter Steve Earle.

van Zandt’s Disciples of Soul will be the house band. Jon Stewart is the host. And making the tributes, and possibly performing, will be Bruce, musician wife E Streeter Patti Scialfa, E Street Band member Garry Tallent, and Southside Johnny Lyon of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.

Yes, this is really happening. You are not hallucinating.

“This event showcases the ‘American Music’ part of our name and mission,” said Monmouth University president and board chair of the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music, Dr. Patrick Leahy in a statement.  “By honoring American music greats, such as those named today, and by creating dynamic education and public programs, along with major museum exhibitions, we make valuable contributions to the understanding and importance of American music in our lives.”

The Bruce Springsteen Archives serves as the official repository for the music of Bruce Springsteen, plus photographs, periodicals, oral histories, rare recordings, films, and artifacts related to Springsteen and the E Street Band.  The Center for American Music produces museum exhibitions, symposiums, and seminars, teacher workshops, concerts, internships, and various public programs to promote and celebrate the many forms of American music and their impact on our culture and national identity.

PS Please God they film this thing!
