0

After three hours of deliberations, a New York has reached a verdict in the rape case of E. Jean Carroll vs. Donald Trump.

The jurors have decisions to make about the actual alleged rape, and defamation. Hold on.

Tony Awards Now Imperiled as Broadway’s Actors Equity Joins Writers Guild on Picket Line

Actors Equity, the union that covers Broadway, has joined the Writers Guild picket line today.

This really spells trouble for the Tony Awards, which were already threatened with having no writers on the show on June 11th.

With Equity on the huskings, this means their sympathies are with the Writers Guild. There is no doubt the WGA will picket the Tonys on the night of the show. Now with this sword hanging over them, I’m told CBS is likely to move the Tonys to the fall when it’s hoped that the strike will be over.

My WGA sources say they’ve never seen such a strong commitment from other unions in this cause. All the other unions are supporting them. More and more people in front of and behind cameras are adamant that streaming services have to pay more to the writers. Soon, the directors’ and actors’ unions will be voting on the same issues.

A source says: “We’re in for a long haul.”

Come on Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Hulu et al. Let’s not let this drag on and on.

Controversial Country Singer Morgan Wallen Put on Vocal Rest for Six Weeks, Cancels Concerts After Injuring Himself (See Video)

0

Is the universe punishing Morgan Wallen?

The controversial country singer says he has to cancel six weeks of concerts and go on vocal rest. He’s damaged his vocal chords badly and now he has to zip his lip.

Wallen got caught on a video saying the “N” word a couple of years ago. He was briefly punished by his manager, agent, and record company. But he’s so successful that eventually they gave in. A little racism? Who cares if the money is flowing in?

Now Wallen’s voice is hurt. He has to be quiet. I don’t expect him to read anything. Maybe he can watch “12 Years a Slave,” the original “Roots,” and some good documentaries that could educate him. He’s got nothing else to do.

Dolly Parton’s Rock Album is with a Who’s Who of Rock Stars and Songs Including Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr on “Let it Be”

0

You know that once Dolly Parton got into the Rock Hall, she had to make a rock album. So look at this track list. It’s a killer. Between the songs and the people who made them famous, Dolly has cornered a market.

This is either going to be crazy good or crazy terrible, but probaby the former. She’s even got Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr on “Let it Be,” Sting on “Every Breath You Take,”

and Linda Perry on “What’s Up (What’s Going on).”

She even duets with Elton John on “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.”

I haven’t seen a line up like since Sam Moore of Sam & Dave’s “Overnight Sensational” with Springsteen, Sting, Bon Jovi, Wynonna, Fantasia, Steve Winwood, and Paul Rodgers.

“Rock Star” will hit on November 17th– way after the Grammy deadline, but just in time for the holidays.

MTV Movie and TV Awards Still Found a Million Viewers Despite No Host, No Audience, No Actual Show

0

Someone is still watching MTV.

They say their Movie and TV Awards were up by 23% across 8 channels and Paramount Plus on Sunday night.

This is despite having no no host, no audience, and basically no show, just clips and pre-taped acceptance speeches.

How weird. In the end, fans just settled on a miscellaneous show. A million people watched across the 8 channels, and maybe a million more on Paramount Plus.

This should give the Tony Awards hope, and maybe also the future of awards shows will just be like this, take an example and elimination the entire live element!

“Succession” Star David Rasche Says The Final Episode “Will Blow You Away, You Won’t Believe What Happens”

Not even David Rasche’s wife of 43 years, Heather Lupton, nows the ending of “Succession.”

Rasche, the talented veteran of TV and films, plays Waystar Royco senior executive Karl on the hugely popular HBO coming to the end of its four season run. The finale, set for May 28th, runs 90 minutes and may be the highest rated show on the cabler ever.

With Logan Roy (Brian Cox) dead, the family, including conniving Cousin Greg and everyone on the board, is positioning for one final showdown. And that will come in the last episode, which seems like it will also feature Logan’s funeral.

Last night at the premiere of “Book Club 2,” I had the pleasure of running into the Rasches. I confessed to David that I remembered him as brash, comic relief from “Ryan’s Hope” in the early 80s. He’s had a huge career since then. In recent episodes of “Succession,” Karl has reamed out a couple of characters including Kendall. He and Peter Friedman’s Frank have turned into a Greek chorus, but have moved from restrained observations to blunt threats.

Rasche said, “Wait til you see the last episode. You won’t believe what happens.” Oh my god, I said– really? Is there a duel? A death? Cousin Greg fakes everyone out and wins? “I can’t tell you,” Rasche said. “But it’s big.”

His wife, Heather, sat with us during dinner. “I’m sure you know what happens,” I said. She shook her head. “I don’t! He hasn’t said a thing.”

Very ominous.

Following up from my overnight story, some other guests last night included the great Karen Duffy, plus Tribeca Film Festival chief Paula Weinstein– who insists the Tribeca Film Festival will go on despite the strike, plus Talia Balsam. An accomplished actress, Talia is also the daughter of two famed Hollywood actors — the late Martin Balsam and 89 year old Joyce van Patten. Joyce is the sister of late Eight is Enough star Dick van Patten. Talia is married to “Mad Men” star John Slattery, who directed a movie in the Tribeca Fest. She was also married from 1989 to 1993 to George Clooney. Some resume! And she’s one of the best people to run into!

Review: Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburgen, Candice Bergen Are Back in “Book Club 2,” the Rare Sequel that Betters the Original

0

You could think of Oscar winners Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, and Mary Steenburgen, and multiple Emmy winner Candice Bergen as senior Avengers in “Book Club 2,” the much better sequel to 2019’s “Book Club.” They are super heroines, powerful women of comedy, drama, and a certain age who are like fine wine.

The movie is an old fashioned studio release, constructed with some pearls of great acting and writing that are strung together with a few cliches. If the movie– directed by Bill Holderman — didn’t have four superstars carrying it, we might think otherwise. But these ladies light “Book Club 2” up and often take it well past its possibilities.

Fonda is clearly the star of this quartet. She looks amazing, of course, a decade older than the other women it seems plausible that they all met at the same age. The main story is that her Vivian has said to yes to marrying Don Johnson, even though it doesn’t seem like she wants to go through with it. Vivian has never been married, and loves her independent life.

All the woman are successful and have lots of money. That is never discussed. All old friends, they decide to go on a bachelorette trip for Vivian in Italy. Shot on location, “Book Club” looks good enough to eat. It’s unparalleled success as a travelogue, maybe even better than “The White Lotus.”

There are dumb jokes, old people jokes, sex jokes, bad jokes. There are clever ones, too, and comic lines dropped like little cherry bombs by Bergen, as a retired judge named Sharon, which play to the Emmy winning actresses Serena Williams-type delivery. Bergen just sneaks up court in every scene and smashes the ball over the fence, leaving everyone around her blown away. Bergen began her career as a gorgeous ingenue, then showed off her braininess, and finally became a great comic actress. She kind of glows here.

The other women are a little more subtle, no less equals. Diane Keaton’s Diane is fashionable and funny, accessible and wry. She’s also a walking fashion show. Keaton still has star like magic. Steenburgen’s Carol is a voice of reason even if she does tempt trouble with an old beau she runs into in Italy. Carol is terrified that her husband at home (Craig T. Nelson), who’s had a heart attack. will misbehave while she’s away. Mostly this involves him eating bacon behind her back.

Even though Holderman gives each actress her own moments, Fonda is his main focus. The two time Oscar winner can do anything and make it look right. At the foot of the Spanish steps in Rome she allows the other women adorn her with a cheap silk sash that says “Bride to Be” and a bridal bonnet that Fonda wears with aplomb. It’s very funny. When she finally gets to her big speech at the climax of the film, all the silliness of the comedy is removed like too much make up, and she digs into the depths of drama. She makes Vivian, who’s seemed a little two dimensional, a human. It’s lovely.

Steenburgen wrote the closing song in the film, “Anywhere with You,” and it’s sung by all four women. After Diane Warren’s all star song for Fonda’s “80 for Brady,” this is also a potential Oscar nominee. (PS Bette Midler’s new cover of “Mambo Italiano” is a winner, too.)

So what next, Diane asks at the end of the movie? What’s their next adventure? If “Book Club 2” hits, as I think it might, with the mainstream audience, we’ll be seeing a third installment with this gang.

Focus Features went all out last night with big NY premiere, followed by a snazzy party at Tavern on the Green. Ted Danson accompanied his wife, Steenburgen. Bergen came with daughter Chloe and pal, Diane Sawyer. Oscar nominee Judd Hirsch turned up, as did “Succession” star David Rasche. “Brady Bunch” icon Eve Plumb walked the red carpet. Music mogul Clive Davis came with a few guests, which floored his old friend, Fonda. Another Candice, Bushnell, turned up with cosmetics guru Peter Thomas Roth. (The balance of the audience seemed like it consisted of “influencers.” I wish premieres would stop stuffing the theaters with “influencers” and start inviting smart guests again! We miss those days! )

Writers Guild Strike Claims AFI Tribute to Nicole Kidman, Tony Awards Next to Be Delayed, “Wire” Writer David Simon Sees HBO Contract Suspended

The fall out from the WGA strike is getting worse.

The American Film Institute is postponing its June 10th tribute to Nicole Kidman. This is their annual gala and a big deal. But with the strike on, and a month to go, they could not proceed without writers. Also the actors needed, including Kidman, would not cross the picket line. (Note to Nicole: you and Keith and the girls are invited over to dinner that night at my place.)

Next to be cut are the Tony Awards, set for the next day, June 11th. Same problem. I queried the reps for Ariana DeBose, who’s supposed to be the host, and got the cold shoulder. But DeBose likely won’t do the show, and the no one will cross that picket line. So we’ll wait til the fall for these two events.

Also now in trouble: The Tribeca Film Festival, which opens that week in New York. It’s 99% cancelled as the picket lines would be insane. This is a terrible disappointment. But since Jane Rosenthal switched to calling it the Tribeca Festival, maybe non TV and Movie events can happen anyway.

Finally, the great TV writer David Simon, of “The Wire” fame, says HBO has suspended his contract, the one he’s had with them for 25 years (which is really remarkable in itself).

Report: Costner-Yellowstone Divorce Still Not Finalized, Kevin Hasn’t Agreed to Return to Finish Hit Show

0

Kevin Costner won’t come back.

Matt Belloni reports on Puck.com that Costner still hasn’t agreed to return to finish “Yellowstone” and won’t commit to a work schedule.

Costner, Belloni says, wants to make sure his character, John Dutton, doesn’t get a violent send off like Patrick Dempsey did on “Grey’s Anatomy” when Shonda Rhimes t boned his Jeep.

What does Costner want? A tribute dinner for Dutton, and then he jumps to save children from a speeding train? He’s going to be shot like JR Ewing in “Dallas,” but he won’t survive.

The wolves are dancing around Costner now. At this point, his death could be off screen or with a double. A lot of people’s livelihoods are involved. Time to get over it, and move on.

Anyway, the Writers Strike means season 5.2 won’t be filming soon. I don’t think Taylor Sheridan can meet his deadlines announced ten days ago even if all scripts were completed — which isn’t likely.

(WATCH) Best Picture 2024? Trailer for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” Has All the Markings of A Massive Hit with Lots of Nominations

0

This may finally be Christopher Nolan’s year. The director of “Dunkirk, “Memento,” Dark Night-Batman movies looks like he’s finally made his masterwork with “Oppenheimer,” coming in July.

“Oppenheimer” has an an all star cast with Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer. Matt Damon — who could be a lead Best Actor in “Air” and a supporting here, as Leslie Groves, the general who ran the Manhattan Project for Oppenheimer, plus Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., and so on.

We haven’t a Big Important Movie in a long time, but it’s about time. This is the kind of movie the Oscars need, and everyone can get behind.
