Emmys: “Succession” Breaks Record with 27 Nominations, Leads HBO to Huge Lead Over Struggling Netflix, Amazon

0

No surprise: “Succession” broke a record today with 27 Emmy nominations. Literally everyone was nominated, all the actors, writers, directors. It was a slam dunk.

“Succession” led HBO to a huge lead over competitors like Netflix and Amazon. Showtime, their old rival, scored only with “Yellowjackets.”

HBO took the top three spots with “Succession.” “White Lotus,” and “The Last of Us.” “Barry was also very strong for them. Even “House of the Dragon” came through.

For Netflix, their big successes were “The Crown,” “Beef,” and “Wednesday.” Their output is now exceeding their awards return tremendously. But there’s always next season, and the hope of watercooler shows that no one expected.

As for “Succession” it should win almost of all of its nominations. Too bad David Zaslav didn’t pay for another season. But Logan is dead, and the show is over. There’s no going back.

Emmy Awards Ignore All of Taylor Sheridan Universe Including “Yellowstone,” “1923,” “Tulsa King” After Constant Chaos

0

The TV Academy does not like Taylor Sheridan and his “Yellowstone” universe.

None of their shows, stars, directors, or writers were nominated for anything. That includes Kevin Costner, Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, Sylvester Stallone.

Sheridan’s big shows — “Yellowstone.” “1923,” and “Tulsa King” struck out even among supporting players.

Sheridan’s universe has been the source of constant chaos and enmity all year long. His stars are unhappy, the shows have no schedules, Costner and Sheridan have been locked in a public war.

Hard to imagine since Sheridan’s ratings are huge, and he does so much of the work. But the Academy just said, thank you, next.

Emmy Awards Snubs: Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, “1923” Ignored, Selena Gomez Nothing for “Murders,” Amazon’s Mega Expensive “Lord of the Rings,” Costner, “Yellowstone,” “Stranger Things”

Harrison Ford is not having a great week.

He and Helen Mirren and their drama, “1923,” were not nominated for any Emmy Awards. He was also snubbed for his comedy acting in “Shrinking.”

Come on!

Ditto Kevin Costner and anyone for “Yellowstone” season 5 part 1.

Also ignored in the main categories: “Lord of the Rings” series at Amazon, which cost a reported $450 million. They did get below the line nominations for crafts, which is nice, but no Best Drama or Acting, or Writing.

Selena Gomez wasn’t acknowledged for “Only Murders in the Building.” This is a mistake.

Season Four of “Stranger Things” — which was entirely unnecessary — also got no major noms. The Netflix show has run its course.

The big winners are “Succession,” “White Lotus,” “The Last of Us,” and “Ted Lasso.”

Really surprising: “Poker Face” didn’t make Best Comedy although star Natasha Lyonne made it in. Such a great show. Instead, “Jury Duty” got the spot and James Marsden was nominated for playing himself — he’s very funny.

“Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning” Latest Chapter Hits $7 Mil in Tuesday Previews as Mega Media Pays Off

0

People went to theaters last night in droves.

They saw “Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning” in previews. The Total was $7 million, the top of the estimate for 3,300 theaters.

The latest Tom Cruise extravaganza bulks up to 4,000 theaters today on its first official day of release.

Friday’s numbers will include all these previews, so the number should be robust. But “Dead Reckoning” could have $27 million banked before then.

Paramount has spent a zillion bucks flying this whole group — 25 or more people at any given time — first class around the world to launch “Dead Reckoning.” It looks like the plan will pay off.

This is the film theaters needed after a desultory run with “The Flash” and “Indiana Jones.” It also paves the way for “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” which are right behind it.

Strike Update: Actors Guild Says They’ll Agree to Arbitration with Studios at Least Through Tomorrow at Midnight

The actors union, SAG-AFTRA, has agreed to arbitration. Kinda.

The union says the studios can negotiate with them through federal mediation — but only until midnight tomorrow, when they could vote to strike.

“The SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical/Streaming Negotiating Committee has agreed to the AMPTP’s last-minute request for federal mediation and has reaffirmed the negotiating committee’s dedication to securing a fair deal by the expiration of the extended contract at 11:59 p.m. PT on Wednesday, July 12,” SAG-AFTRA said in a statement.

The union disputed a report in Variety that the studios got all their honchos together and decided to make a try at bringing this ridiculous standoff to an end. The studios, this reporter feels, should just cough up the small amount of money wanted by SAG and the Writers Guild and let everyone get back to work.

Will the mediation work? It’s unlikely. At this point the two unions have more leverage if they go on strike. Content is running out at all the TV networks. Soap opera characters are starting to weird things as the shows are written by scabs. Soon, it’s going to be like “The Purple Rose of Cairo.”

Speak Now, Pay Later: Taylor Swift on Track to Sell Whopping 700,000 Copies of Latest Re-recorded Album

0

It’s Taylor Swift’s world, all right.

The number 1 music star in the world is set to sell the equivalent of SEVEN HUNDRED THOUSAND copies of her re-recorded album, “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).”

According to hitsdailydouble it will be the biggest seller in “Version” series. Of that total a shocking 475,000 copies are CDs, LPs, and paid downloads.

Swift’s fans are obviously buying multiple copies in different formats. If it it came as the middle of an Oreo cookie, they’d be eating it.

There’s no question that Swift and the people behind her are marketing geniuses.

Meantime, she has several other albums on the charts including her 2023 “Midnights” in different versions.

Taylor is a workhorse, that’s for sure. She may be recording a new album even as I write this! And she has more re-records to come.

Swift is on Monte and Avery Lipman’s Republic Records, part of Universal. This will be Republic’s 19th week at number 1 this year. They also have Morgan Wallen, who could not be more different than Taylor Swift. Talk about covering your bets!

Idris Elba (The James Bond Everyone Wanted) Talks “Hijack” And Being a Leading Man: “It’s all perspective– I’m sure I’m not good looking to everyone!”

0

HIJACK, on Apple TV +, has quickly captured its audience, proving to be a massive international hit.  The first three shows have dropped, there are seven in total and the fourth one will debut this Wednesday.  HIJACK is already the third most popular streamed show in the top ten and climbing higher daily.  Idris Elba, (also a producer) plays Sam, a skilled negotiator who finds himself on this nail-biting  perilous flight.

Taking place in real time, the undeniable charismatic star power of Elba has made this series an instant hit.  Elba has a storied acting career, he’s also a singer, songwriter and DJ.  At the recent press conference at the Ham Yard Hotel in London, Elba was joined on the panel by creators George Kay (Lupin) and Jim Field Smith (Criminal) as well as fellow actors Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife) and actor Maxton Beesley.  The project has been 2 ½ years in the making.  Elba explained what drew him in. “I knew early in the journey what we were trying to achieve and the perspective of the story.   As a producer and an actor, I was interested in doing something that hit the mark in Television.  I love watching  TV and making it. I think the merger of film and TV has gotten smaller.”

Most of the action takes place in the air.  Elba explained, “There were challenges setting it almost exclusively inside an airplane.  There are two problems with that.  One is to engage the audience dramatically, so it does not feel dull and flat.  The other is to make you feel that you are actually in an airplane. We shot on a real plane in a studio and the confinement of that really applied to the drama.  It all led into the claustrophobia of it.  The fight sequences were not easy to maneuver around because we did not take the plane apart and make it easy for us to shoot.  We made it as hard on ourselves as we possibly could so that would translate convincingly on screen.”

Elba was asked that as an actor who gets a variety of roles, is it a blessing or a curse to be such a good -looking man?  He quipped, “Hey it’s all perspective. I’m sure I’m not good looking to everyone! “He added, “All my life I’ve been told I’m a big lad.  I’ve taken on roles that have fed into that a bit.  This particular time was interested in playing against that.  Sam isn’t always the hero, he’s more cerebral and vulnerable in the sense that that he has lot going on internally about his family.  For me, it was playing against type. Some camera angles are not sexy, especially on a plane!  But I am a big guy, so luckily, I was in the first-class cabin with extra leg room!”

At the premiere at the British Film Institute, Elba thanked his mother (he’s building a film studio in Ghana where she is from) who he credits with the ‘inspiration’ to be an actor. “Quite literally, none of us would be here without her.” He went on to thank Apple TV. “Apple has been very supportive of me and my career.  They’ve done an incredible job of doing what they do in this ever-changing streaming world.  They offer something very fantastic.  HIJACK is a bit of a showcase for that.”  He then went on to thank his fellow cast and crew for working on “the flight that took six months. We probably could have gone to Mars!”  He then ended the night with, “I’m really proud of this series.”   Elba has every right to be.  It’s a thrilling, gripping over the top entertaining ride. Don’t miss it!

Free Movie Tickets Buy Christian Crowd Funding Film “Sound of Freedom” Number 1 on Monday Box Office

0

If you give it away, they will come.

On Monday. the crowd funded Christian movie, “Sounds of Freedom,” finished at number 1 at the box office. It beat both “Insidious” and “Indiana Jones” with $4 million.

What it sounds like, though, is not freedom but a scam. You understand that the tickets are being funded by church groups that are buying the tickets at discounts and handing them out to anyone who asks. This is very important. No one is giving away tickets to big studio movies.

“Sounds” from Angel Studios, which is a crowd funding operation looking for donations and investments so they can make more of these movies. But I do think their box office numbers should be annotated so everyone understands they are not in actual competition with real studio movies.

Here’s the link to my original story explaining all this.

Meanwhile, “Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One” opens Wednesday. “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie,” being cross promoted, come next Thursday.

Trailer: If “Barbie” Doesn’t Work Out, Timothy Chalamet as Willy “Wonka” Will Save Warner Bros. This Christmas

0

The trailer for “Wonka” is so good you barely need to see the movie.

But the remake of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” coming this fall from Warner Bros. looks like it’s going to be HUGE.

Timothy Chalamet plays the Gene Wilder role, and this will be his franchise. Hugh Grant steals the trailer (wait til you see). They’ll get three movies out of this IP. Paul King, who directed the charming “Paddington,” is helming. The trailer doesn’t indicate it but there’s music, also. Chalamet will sing “Pure Imagination.” He’s going to rocket to the top.

Nice because now Timmy will eat chocolate instead of people, as he did in “Bones and All.”
