Global Citizen ABC Special a Spectacular Ratings Flop, Usual Spokesman Hugh Jackman Skipped the Show for a Walk in the Woods

The Global Citizen TV special on ABC was a spectacular flop on Sunday night.

The show, which was highlights from the concert in Central Park the night before, scored just 1 million viewers. That was the lowest rateed show of the main networks by far.

Even though the concert itself had some very good performances, GC is something TV viewers can’t understand — or they do, and don’t want anything to do with it. Anyway, football was on against it, and “60 Minutes.”

Usual GC spokesman Hugh Jackman never turned up on Saturday in Central Park, perhaps fearing he’d be drenched. He posted on Instagram on Sunday morning taking a walk in the woods near his house.

GC was a bust on YouTube Saturday night also, starting with 250K viewers and whittling down to 31K by the time the Red Hot Chili Peppers were on.

SCOOP UPDATE Late Night TV Shows — Kimmel, Fallon, Colbert, Meyers — WILL Be Back on October 2nd Even Without Actors as Guests

0

UPDATE: I was correct. The shows return on Monday. Oliver is back this Sunday night.

EARLIER Our four months of suffering is almost over.

All the late night talk shows, as well as John Oliver and Bill Maher on HBO, will be back on October 2nd.

That’s the plan according to my sources. Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, and Seth Meyers should all return on that date now that the WGA strike is over.

Their guests? Unless SAG wraps up their strike this week, the hosts will be interviewing rock stars, sports stars, miscellaneous celebrity, reality stars, and so on. No actors.

And “Saturday Night Live?” Lorne Michaels is looking at the following week for a return. But that may not be so easy. It’s unclear if the cast will come back during the SAG strike even though they’re under the same contract as soap opera actors. Some may refuse, but for the most part SAG will tell them they have to go back to work.

“Yellowstone” Dropped By 3 Million Viewers on Second Sunday CBS Outing, But Fans Got to See A Character Smoking (An FCC No No)

0

The “Yellowstone” CBS experiment is falling apart.

On Sunday night, the Kevin Costner series got 4.3 million viewers for its first season rerun run on the Tiffany network.

Last week, the premiere of “Yellowstone” got about 7.5 viewers during its first hour, and a little less during the second for an average of 8.2 million.

Last May, the final episode of season 5, part 1 had over 8 million viewers on the Paramount Network.

Of course, “Yellowstone” season 1 has been available forever on DVD and streaming. In fact, last night Peacock ran two commercials during the show inviting fans to come watch it without commercials.

Last night fans also got to see something that’s an FCC no-no on broadcast TV: smoking. Beth Dutton, the hardcore central character played so brilliantly by Kelly Reilly, was puffing away without abandon. Her brother (Wes Bentley) mentioned cancer, but she wasn’t having it. Cigarette commercials were banned by the FCC 5 decades ago for the major networks. Characters smoking on screen is rarer than rare. “Mad Men” had it but they were on cable. “Mrs. Maisel” was on Amazon.

But CBS? No, no, no.

“Yellowstone” is also full of almost R rated stuff sexually. It’s way more than a broadcast show would ever be allowed by CBS on a Sunday night. The smoking, the sex — CBS is stuck with it until new primetime shows are trotted out after the SAG and WGA strikes. This “Yellowstone” experiment was out of necessity.

I guess “Yellowstone” fans know all about Beth and her smoking. Someone put together a compilation of her best moments.

RIP David McCallum, 90, Suave Illya Kuryakin from “The Man from UNCLE” and Ducky from “NCIS”

0

David McCallum has died at age 90. The beloved actor is known to a couple of generations show as Duckie from “NCIS.” But to us more mature folks McCallum will always be the suave international spy Illya Kuryakin from “The Man from UNCLE.” He and Robert Vaughn, as Napoleon Solo, were the TV James Bonds of the 60s.

Their show was so incredibly popular that it led to a parody comedy, “Get Smart,” from Mel Brooks and Buck Henry.

McCallum had a long movie and theater career, as well. He was also accomplished musician. And believe it or not, he was involved in a Hollywood tabloid scandal. He was married to actress Jill Ireland, whom he met in England and came to the US with. She even guest starred in The Man from UNCLE. But when he introduced her to actor Charles Bronson, Ireland left him and married Bronson. It was a big scandal at the time.

McCallum, of course, happily remarried, had a son and daughter with his second wife. He had few film roles in the 1980s, but hit gold when he was signed to play Ducky on “NCIS.” He started in 2003 and was still signed to the show this year. He also performed in three Broadway productions. He got a Drama Desk nomination in 1984

But David McCallum will always be associated with The Man from UNCLE. He will never be forgotten for his suave, cool performance.

Exclusive: Rosie O’Donnell Scores Lyle Menendez Podcast Interview As Brothers Seek Re-Sentencing in 34 Year Old Double Murder of Parents

0

Rosie O’Donnell has scored a big interview for her I Heart Radio podcast: Lyle Mendendez, who was convicted with his brother Erik of the 1989 murder of their parents — after two trials that gripped this country.

The Menendez brothers said the parents had abused them, raped them, for years. After a mistrial, a second jury sent them to jail for 34 years. In that time, both brothers have been married (Lyle’s wife is a lawyer). Lyle has been such a model prisoner that in 2018, after 18 years, Rosie says, they finally let him see his brother. They now live next door to each other in the same San Diego prison.

O’Donnell has been visiting Lyle for six months, although the podcast was done over the phone. She tells me, “You can hear the woman from the prison on the phone call, checking in.”

Lyle has not done an interview since 2017, and that wasn’t widelycirculated. But there’s new interest in the Menendezes now that a former member of the boy band Menudo has said that Jose Menendez, who was the head of RCA Records in the 80s, raped him. Also a letter has surfaced between one of the brothers and a cousin, written six months before the murders, in which he describes the monstrous abuse they suffered at the parents’ hands.

These two things should be enough not to have another trial — it’s too late for that– but to ask for a resentencing. The brothers hope that after 34 years they would be released with time served.

If you were around in the 90s, you know that Los Angeles was a crazy hotbed of highly publicized trials starting with OJ Simpson, the police beating of Rodney King, and two Menendez trials. Simpson walked, the Jones trial sent LA on fire. So the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office had to make something stick, and the Menendezes — some feel — were railroaded into life in prison.

“This was before we talked about incest or rape in a family, or abuse,” O’Donnell says. “It was before the movie The Burning Bed when we saw a woman fight back against a husband. Things are very different now.”

Famed LA criminal attorney Mark Geragos is now representing the brothers, which means their case will get a lot of attention again. Meanwhile, Lyle Menendez has won a lot of awards in prison, chiefly for running a restoration project for which Erik — an accomplished artist — has painted a 360 degree mural in the prison yard.

“They’ve never been involved in any act of violence,” Rosie says. “Thirty four years is enough.”

There’s more on this subject later. In the meantime, download the I Heart Radio app for Rosie’s “Onward” Podcast. The new one drops on Tuesday morning.

NBC Must Have Something on Donald Trump — He Calls Them “Vicious,” Vows to Investigate Them When Elected

0

Donald Trump has been ranting and raving all night on social media.

He still has said barely a word about Rupert Murdoch stepping down at Fox.

Tonight he’s attacked ABC News and now NBC. The latter must have something on him to get this kind of reaction. He calls them “vicious” and “dishonest” and threatens to investigate them “when” he’s elected. (He will never be elected.)

Writers Guild and Studios Have Reportedly Reached an Agreement! SAG AFTRA Should Be Next (Read Announcement)

0

Reports are coming fast and furious that the Writers Guild and the AMPTP have finally reached an agreement after 146 days of a strike.

The two parties met today at 10zm and finally came to an agreement about artificial intelligence and the size of writers’ rooms on TV shows. They met yesterday, then everyone thought they’d gone home. But I was told last night the parties were still hacking it out well into the wee hours.

AMPTP negotiator Carol Lombardini Tweeted tonight: “well we laughed, we cried, we fucked around, we found out, we murdered some trees and we wished a little light homelessness on certain people, but overall i think we can all agree i personally did a great job! now if you’ll excuse us we need to go atone!!!!!!”

It’s a little unclear when everyone goes back to work. The agreement has to be ratified by members of the Guild. But by the end of this week talk shows, for example, will be able to start up again.

Next is the SAG AFTRA strike, which also has to resolved and ratified. Another week for them? If the WGA contract is like the DGA, SAG will probably pick up main elements.

It’s a Yom Kippur miracle!

RIP Terry Kirkman, 83, Songwriter and Singer for The Association, Wrote the Hit Song, “Cherish”

Sad to report that one of the great voices of 60s pop music has died.

Terry Kirkman was 83 years old. He was the songwriter and lead singer of The Association, a classy outfit of vocalist whose many hits became part of the culture for life.

Kirkman wrote the group’s signature song, “Cherish,” a haunting uptempo ballad that was a hit in the 60 s and again with David Cassidy in the 70s. His voice can be heard prominently on the Association’s other hits like “Never My Love,” “Along Comes Mary,” and “Windy.” “Cherish” had three Grammy nominations. Bones Howe was the Association’s famous producer and he brought with him most of The Wrecking Crew to play on the records. (Howe also produced all the Fifth Dimension’s hit including their hit cover “Never My Love.”)

The Association’s Greatest Hits for a decade was part of every record collection, that’s how popular they were. Kirkman had a great pop education, too. He was “associated” with all the top pop stars in LA in the mid to late 60s like Cass Elliott and David Crosby.

The voices of The Association will be heard resonating through the universe far longer than most of today’s acts. Condolences.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Confuses Chanukah with Yom Kippur, Uses Wrong Spelling, in High Holiday Greeting

0

The delightfully stupid Marjorie Taylor Greene wishes all Jews a Happy Yom Kippur on social media.

She used a menorah for Chanukah, with a shofar, to celebrate the wrong holiday, Marj, Chanukah comes in December.

At least she didn’t use Jewish Space Lasers!

“G’Mar Chatima Tova” is what MTG meant to say on her card. Someone told her to write Gamar Chasima Tova, which means the lasers aren’t working during High Holidays.

We will send her a colorful egg come this Christmas.

Miami Dolphins Beat Denver Broncos in Second Highest Scoring Game in History, Worst Game for Broncos Ever

0

Yes, it’s true.

The Miami Dolphins beat the Denver Bronxo today 70 – 20.

The last time an NFL team scored 70 points was in 1966 when the Washington Redskins beat the NY Giants 72-41.

This was the worst game in Broncos history. It might be the worst game in history period,

For Miami, there were 10 touchdowns. 10! Points scored: 700.

No matter how bad things are for the Jets, they’re not this bad.
