Michael Moore Surprises with New “Stealth” Film To Be Launched at Toronto Film Fest

0

In the pack of titles announced today for the Toronto Film Festival: a “stealth” film by Michael Moore called “Where to Invade Next.” So far there is no distributor. The whole thing is being handled by WME and Ari Emanuel, the “real” Ari from “Entourage (if you didn’t know) whose brother is the mayor of Chicago.

Moore’s been shooting on the sly– (I wondered why he’d been so quiet lately.) Moore’s film is definitely timed to current events, although I think his work is getting more anecdotally interesting than headline making. But we’ll see come September. This is going to be the hottest ticket in Toronto, by far.

The doc will explore the military industrial complex, a subject no one can be tired of and is always eye opening no matter what your political affiliation.

Moore is the winner of the 2003 Best Documentary Oscar for “Bowling for Columbine,” a movie that reverberates now as every week we hear about another mass shooting somewhere. His other hit documentaries with lasting impact include “Fahrenheit 911,” “Sicko” and “Roger and Me.”

Keep refreshing, as details come in…

Exclusive: Ellie Goulding Has an Unreleased Song Called “Spy” — Likely New James Bond Theme

UPDATE JULY 29TH

Ellie Goulding is trending everywhere. Our story is getting rehashed everywhere– often without credit. But “Spy” in Ellie’s song registry is likely a placeholder title for “Spectre.” Read it here first.

EXCLUSIVE JULY 28TH

I can tell you exclusively that British pop star Ellie Goulding has a song registered with BMI Music called “Spy.” Is it the theme from “Spectre,” the new James Bond movie? All signs indicate yes.

Goulding posted a picture to Instagram yesterday showing her leaving Abbey Road studios, with the message “That’s a wrap.”

Only July 9th she Tweeted, “Live and let die.”

British tabloids have gone crazy wondering if she’s the one to join Shirley Bassey, Adele, Carly Simon, Nancy Sinatra, Paul McCartney and of course John Barry in supplying music for James Bond.

Recently singer Sam Smith took himself out of the running. Adele is who knows where at this point. My source on this said recently, “The choice is so random and out of left field, you wouldn’t believe it.”

If Goulding is the choice, it will break her out big time. She only has two albums, and the last was released in 2012. She has a hit single out right now. But more importantly, she has a bunch of unreleased songs on BMI besides “Spy.” The betting is she will release a third album with the “Spy” single simultaneously. And we’ll have a big pop story to write about for the end of the year.

Jermaine Jackson on His Father’s Condition: Mini-Stroke, Cardiac Arrest, “Not as Bad as We Feared”

0

Jermaine Jackson took to Twitter tonight to give an update on his father’s condition and to thank the nurses and doctors in Sao Paolo for saving his life. Joseph Jackson remains hospitalized following a stroke and heart attack on his 87th birthday. Too much celebrating, Joe. Say it ain’t so!

Ingrid Sischy: Remembering the Smartest Girl in the Class

0

I was so surprised by the news of Ingrid Sischy’s death last week, I couldn’t really write an obit. I immediately thought of her partner, Sandy Brandt, and her great friends Elton John and David Furnish. And not just them, but all the people Ingrid quietly affected in the media world, on a social or business level. It’s not like we were best friends. We were a lot un-like. But Ingrid, who’d edited Interview for years, wrote for the New Yorker, and tuned in to higher frequencies, liked me. And I liked her.

She was the smartest girl in our “class.” And you know, you hated her for it. She was too good– too with it, too on it, too into it. She knew about whatever was happening before you did, no matter how you tried. She had a better take on it than anyone else, too. You thought you had a handle on something and then you heard Ingrid talk about it, and thought, Damn, she’s right.

So I’m just getting to this now. I am weary from  writing obits for older celebs and idols this year like E.L. Doctorow or Percy Sledge. But at least they were “of an age.” Ingrid would have been a damn fun old lady. We’ve all been gypped.

Condolences to Sandy and the rest of their family and their wide circle of friends. I will tell you that on Friday night Peggy Siegal dedicated the Hamptons screening of “99 Homes” to Ingrid. Last Monday Ingrid had agreed to have her name on the invite as a host. By Friday, she was gone. I heard Peggy had tears in her eyes as she announced the dedication. That was because she knew, like all of us, if Ingrid had been there we’d have gotten a cool ‘take’ and a better night.

Rest in peace.

Janet Jackson May Lose “Sleeep” If She Heads to Brazil and Brings Home Ailing Father

0

Janet Jackson may not be getting much “sleeep” this week. I’m told she is the likely candidate to fly to Sao Paolo, Brazil and bring home her ailing father.

Joseph Jackson is recuperating from a stroke and possible heart attacks after partying in Sao Paolo for his 87th birthday. I reported, then TMZ helped themselves to the info– that Mr. Jackson had a burst artery behind one eye. While he was being examined at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paolo he had a stroke. He had two surgeries for pacemakers.

My source says he is ” well and alert” now. We’re waiting for confirmation of Janet’s trip. Ironically, Janet had posted a very moving Birthday tweet to her father earlier on Sunday. This all marks a change of attitude from Janet, who was not always on the best terms with Joseph after she learned he’d fathered an illegitimate child–a a daughter, Jovanni, who is younger than Janet by a couple of years.

But time heals all wounds, and as Nick Lowe once sang, wounds all heels.

Steve Jobs Movie Getting Centerpiece Treatment from NY Film Fest in September

0

We won’t get the line up for the Toronto Film Festival until tomorrow morning. But we already know the three big movies for the New York Film Festival, which comes two weeks later in September.

The opening night film is Robert Zemeckis’s “The Walk” with Joseph Gordon Levitt playing aerialist Phillipe Pettit. Announced today: the centerpiece film is “Steve Jobs” with Michael Fassbender as the creator of Apple, from Universal Pictures after Columbia bobbled their version. Aaron Sorkin wrote the script and Danny Boyle directed. Closing night film is Don Cheadle’s much anticipated Miles Davis bio, “Miles Ahead.”

Three great choices. NYFF and Film Society of Lincoln Center have gotten very aggressive in the last couple of years with terrific tent pole films. Those three are all potential Oscar bait with loads of possible nominees. The selection committee, chaired by Jones, also includes Dennis Lim, FSLC Director of Programming; Marian Masone, FSLC Senior Programming Advisor; Gavin Smith, Editor-in-Chief, Film Comment; and Amy Taubin, Contributing Editor, Film Comment and Sight & Sound.

UPDATE: EXCLUSIVE Joseph Jackson “Heart Stopped for 10 Seconds” Just Out of Surgery

0

Joseph Jackson is just now out of surgery at Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paolo Brazil. I am told exclusively that he had permanent pace maker surgery this morning after having a temporary pace maker installed last night.

Mr. Jackson was in a perilous situation yesterday after his “heart stopped for 10 seconds” according to my sources. His heart stopped while he was being examined for a burst artery behind his eye. “He’d been feeling fatigued even after the doctors told him that he could wait to have the eye looked at in the US,” says my source.

Plans are unfolding to fly Mr. Jackson home to the US as soon as possible. I’m told that the Michael Jackson estate has offered to help in any way. “They’ve been incredibly cooperative and generous,” says my source.

Luckily, Mr. Jackson is traveling with two business associates. “If he’d been alone, he wouldn’t have made it.”

More to come…

Michael Jackson’s Father, Joseph Jackson, Has Stroke While Visiting Brazil

0

All the details aren’t in yet, but I’ve confirmed with an associate of Joseph Jackson: he did have a stroke yesterday in Brazil while preparing for his 87th birthday party gala.

Jackson annually participates in his own birthday extravaganzas that involve sponsorships, cost a fortune, and reap him some fees. He’d been in Brazil for a few days, attending parties and ribbon cuttings as “patriarch of the Jackson family.”

He’s been traveling with an assistant and with a French woman described as his latest “find.” From time to time Jackson, who did manage the Jackson 5 to international fame, “manages” a young female singer.  Now he’s in a Sao Paolo hospital after complaining about dizziness and temporary blindness. He suffers from diabetes.

As yesterday was her father’s birthday, Janet Jackson posted this on Twitter before the stroke news came. This is really interesting considering her history with her father:

On his website before the stroke, Jackson had this message posted:

“Back in the 70s when I was touring with my sons in Brazil. We had just done a show in Rio and traveled to Sao Paulo for the next show. We run into a problem because our music equipment from Rio did not arrive in time. It had been sent out late from Rio, very late. So we waited, and the crowd waited. Finally the crowd’s patience run out. They became hostile and started throwing stuff at us. I remember all of us with the school teacher “Miss Rose Fine” in tow, running for cover onto a Bus. The crowd was upset. Wow, that was something. Our music equipment finally showed up around 8pm, and we still went out there and put on a show. My boys worked hard and won the crowd back over. But, boy was it tough. From there it was off to Bahia. A few years ago when I visited Brazil, i made it a point of mine to visit “Bahia”. Michael filmed one of my favorite music videos “They don’t care about us” in Bahia. Coming full circle from the 70s.”

Keep refreshing for updates…
