Norman Lear Compares Donald Trump to Archie Bunker in Twitter Post: “Remind you of anyone?”

0

Norman Lear has made it clear he doesn’t like Donald Trump. He will accept the Kennedy Center Honor but will not attend the White House reception with Trump.

He writes on Twitter: “I could never turn my back on the @kencen. It represents the Arts and Humanities which mean everything to me. Of course, I’m accepting……the honors. What I’m not accepting is the @WhiteHouse reception with @realDonaldTrump.”

On Twitter Lear has also posted a video of his most famous creation, Archie Bunker, comparing him to Trump. Actor Carroll O’Connor perverts the Statue of Liberty poem just as Trump lackey Stephen Miller did this week:

Mariah Carey Finally Vindictated: Irv Gotti Admits How Tommy Mottola Used Jennifer Lopez and Ja Rule Against Her for Revenge

0

I just stumbled on this. But music fans with long memories will recall that once Mariah Carey left Tommy Mottola he did everything to mess with her. Now on Viceland producer Irv Gotti explains exactly how Mottola used Jennifer Lopez to upset Carey’s career. The story centers around Lopez’s recording of “I’m Real.” According to Gotti, Carey had recorded with Ja Rule. Mottola found out and ordered Gotti to make a fast duet featuring Ja Rule with Lopez.

In fact, Mariah had already recorded “If We” with Ja Rule for the soundtrack to the movie “Glitter” in spring 2001. When she heard Tommy had scooped her– he pushed “I’m Real” out to blunt Carey’s debut on EMI Records — Carey had an emotional breakdown. She’d been recording with rapper for years against Mottola’s advice. Now he had stolen her thunder. Gotti explains in the clip how Mottola pushed so hard to get his revenge that he loaned Gotti and Lopez his private plane.

The “Glitter” movie was a bust and took the soundtrack with it. (I don’t think it’s even on Spotify.) JLO had the hit, and Mottola– at least briefly– had the satisfaction of sidelining his ex wife. But Mariah had a happy ending: a $50 million buyout from EMI, a resurrection at Def Jam, and success and happiness that continues to this day.

Gotti first admitted this in 2002 in XXL Magazine— and I wrote about it then. But this video interview is new. Check it out at around 2:13 on the video.

Exclusive: Frank Ocean, Director Spike Jonze Collaborating on Hot Ticket Fashion Week Show for Trendy Opening Ceremony Clothes

0

Fashion: it’s not the Yankees, let’s put it that way. I know very little about it. But Opening Ceremony, according to the New Yorker, is as hip as it could be. The New Yorker called them a Mom and Pop shop, but the creators also run Kenzo and are part of big money fashion. BIG money. They make eccentric clothes for young people and depend on celebrities to push their message. All good. Why not?

BIG money means they can afford to pay director Spike Jonze (“Her”) and pop star Frank Ocean to oversee their Fashion Week show next month. (I’m sorry to miss it, but Fashion Week is simultaneous to the Toronto Film Festival.) I’m told the group has selected the always hip La Mama theatre in the East Village as their venue rather than stage their show in the Fashion Tent (behind Lincoln Center, I think, still.)

This will be theater, in other words. The choreographer is Ryan Heffington, who won awards for working on music videos for Sia and Arcade Fire. He is credited with the movement scenes in this summer’s terrific movie, “Baby Driver.”

Whatever this turns out to be, it’s going to be a hot, hot ticket. I’m told that there will be two performances on opening night (September 10th) followed by several days of shows for as long as a week. It’s going to be heavily scripted, with characters that, of course, challenge gender and sex. Sounds cool.

Sony May Reverse Good News of “Spider Man,” “Baby Driver” with Potential “Dark Tower” Disaster

0

Sony’s had a good summer up til now. “Spider Man: Homecoming” and “Baby Driver” have been box office hits and critical hits as well.

But now comes “The Dark Tower” with Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba. Sony says the budget was $66 million, which seems pretty low.

Even lower than that budget number is the one on Rotten Tomatoes–a 20 as of night now. And that’s optimistic considering that some of the negative reviews still got a couple of “fresh” tomatoes.

Overall, “Dark Tower”– two years in the making — sounds like it’s pretty bad. A Monday night premiere was closed to press, which always means one thing: Yikes! (If only studios understood that we get it right away.)

Sony insiders insist “Dark Tower” was made on the cheap, and that they hope for a $20-$25 million opening weekend. Add that to foreign ticket sales to those lovely international audiences that don’t understand or care what’s going on. We’ll see how that works out.

Kennedy Center Honors Make Full Turn Toward Grammys with LLCoolJ, Gloria Estefan, Lionel Richie as Inductees

0

There was a worry that when George Stevens Jr. was forced out of the Kennedy Center Honors the show would turn into the Grammys. Now that fear has come to fruition as three of the five 2017 honorees are basically pop stars: Gloria Estefan, Lionel Richie and LL Cool J.

The other two inductees are Norman Lear and dance great Carmen de Lavallade, widow of Geoffrey Holder.

On the one hand, the Kennedy Center can be applauded for diversity: Four of the five are not white. And Lear has done more for blacks and people of all color in TV than almost anyone.

But the show has skipped theater, opera, jazz, classical music completely. While LL Cool J is a nice guy, he does not deserve a Kennedy Center award. He is long removed from rap or hip hop, too. But he is a favorite of CBS, which hosts the awards, and Les Moonves.

As for Estefan and Richie, maybe in separate years they would be good inductees. But they are also largely the same, from the pop world.

One wonders if somehow the Trump administration’s deep dislike of movie stars and that side of Hollywood augured poorly for many actors in the upper age group who should be in already. Same for Broadway.

But cheers to the inductees. With Stevens gone, and Trump in office, I guess we should be lucky they got who they did.

Golden Globes Group Donates $2.8 Mil to Charities, Chelsea Handler Jokes “Money Goes to Anthony Scaramucci’s 401K”

0

The always-quippy and clever Chelsea Handler hosted tonight’s Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual Grants Banquet at the Beverly Wilshire. She was a terrific host starting the evening by saying, “I’m going to remain completely non-partisan. So lets celebrate the 3 things Donald Trump hates most, foreigners, the press and donating money to charity.” She pointed out the group’s philanthropy as “something we need to hold steadfast to.” She then told the industry and celeb filled crowd that the $2.8 million dollars would go to worthy charities and to “Anthony Scaramucci’s 401 K.” She added, “make sure to tip him when he brings you your car at the valet.”

New HFPA President Meher Tatna then introduced Dustin Hoffman. Chelsea couldn’t help herself and whispered in his ear, “see you upstairs. 1025 that’s my room.” Dustin joked, “you gotta like how she set the tone for the evening.’ Hoffman recounted his long past with the HFPA. “It was 1967, there were maybe 20 of them. I was best newcomer. It was at the Coconut Grove. I saw John Wayne and Sally Kellerman, I think she was doing ‘The Flying Nun,’ then.” PMK powerhouse PR person Heidi Schaeffer, along with others, gently corrected him and said, “Sally Field,” a longtime client of Schaeffer’s. Dustin gave his mea culpa in his trademark smile as he told the crowd to look at the screen for the upcoming video, which he did and briefly saw himself up there. “That’s me? I’m not that old. Maybe a little work on the chin now?”

Director Ava Duvernay followed along with other presenters including Robert Pattinson, Bob Odenkirk, Alison Brie, Mark Hamill, Armie Hammer, Matt Bomer, Anthony Mackie, Aja Naomi King, Kathryn Hahn, Kumail Nanjiani Chadwick Boseman, Patrick Stewart, Elizabeth Moss, Chrissy Metz, Katherine Langford, Dylan Minnette and Stan Lee whom the crowd was thrilled to see. Tony nominee Keala Settle sang “The Greatest Love Of All, “ beautifully. Other celebs were Ali Fazal, who’s supposed to be award worthy terrific in the upcoming Focus Feature, “Victoria & Abdul,” opposite Dame Judi Dench no less, Jon Voight who hung out with his “Midnight Cowboy,” co-star Hoffman, Zoe-Lister Jones and Jenny Slate.

Chelsea then ended the night pride fully saying to the grateful crowd, “two-point eight million dollars distributed to over 55 charities in just under 2 hours. I told you I would get you out of here by 9 pm!”

Greed Destroying Greenwich Village as Famed Eatery The Riviera Set to Close After 48 Years

EXCLUSIVE (with a tip of the hat to Michael Musto): The Riviera Cafe on Seventh Avenue South in Greenwich Village will close on August 31st after 48 years. Greed is the culprit as landlords drive rents so high that restaurants cannot survive.

Our thanks to Mayor Bill DeBlasio. It’s under his watch that the city is filled with For Rent signs on retail establishments.

Last week, French Roast on Sixth Avenue, in business since 1993, shut down without warning.

And it’s not just restaurants. On Sixth Avenue, the gateway to the Village, two large retail stores yawn with darkened windows. Between Eighth Street and Waverly Place, the former B. Dalton book store has been empty for years. More recently, Duane Reade closed their two level store.

It’s an embarasment. Rents are so high that there is no regular supermarket at all on Sixth Avenue from Houston St. to 14th St. — just Citarella, a specialty food store.

The irony is that there are now more expensive — mind blowing expensive– apartments and one family homes than ever before. On one block, former Facebook co-founder Sean Parker is adding two former apartment houses to his carriage house, making a triple sized home. On the same street there are already large homes converted from apartment houses– all empty because the owners don’t really live there (neither does Parker).

Where are they getting food from? Where are they eating? It’s a mystery.

The closing of the Riviera, especially with NYU coming back into session, is a real blow. It’s not a four star restaurant. But like French Roast, it was a meeting place, someplace where you get a drink, a burger, people watch from the large front windows. In later years they added “sports bar” with flat screen TVs. It was an anchor.

When I called there tonight the person who answered the phone said, “We all want to know what it’s going to be next.”

What isn’t needed: a bank, a drug store, a cold glass tower of $5 million apartments.

New York City is dying under DeBlasio. That will be his legacy. He’s starting to make me yearn for Abe Beame.

Trump Lackey Stephen Miller Repudiates Famed Poem at Base of Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor”

0

People come from all over the world to read these words at the base of the Statue of Liberty. It’s a poem called “The New Colossus,” by Emma Lazarus (my neighbor from another lifetime). Today, Trump lackey Stephen Miller– who was always lurking, waiting to prove he was the Worst Person Ever in the Trump White House– repudiated Lazarus.

The poem:

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

“Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she

With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Here’s Miller at today’s White House Press conference:

This is a horrible person. His parents should be ashamed of themselves. He’s a POS. I cannot abide this. I can’t believe anyone who voted for Trump agrees with him.

Ringo Starr’s New Album Has Paul McCartney, Peter Frampton Trading Titles for New Songs

0

Ringo Starr’s new album “Give More Love” is set for September 15th. You can hear it a lot on SiriusXM’s Beatles channel (18) along with a lot of Ringo solo tracks that are finally getting their due.

But a funny thing on Ringo’s new album. He’s got a lot of famous friends singing, playing, writing. Paul McCartney and Peter Frampton are featured. Their contributions are weirdly connected to each other.

Frampton co-wrote a song on the album called “Speed of Sound.” McCartney has a credit on a song called “Show Me the Way.”

But in real life, er, classic rock history, McCartney had a number 1 album called “Speed of Sound” in 1976. (That was the one with “Silly Love Songs” and “Let Em In.”) Frampton had a massive hit from his “Frampton Comes Alive” album called “Show Me the Way.” And that was also in 1976.

What does it mean? Should we play them backwards? There are no coincidences, not in the extended Beatles world!

Sting of Queens: Leah Remini’s Good Fortune with “Kevin Can Wait” Is Miserable for Actress Erinn Hayes, Fired from Show and Character Killed Off

0

This is really an odd twist. Leah Remini– doing a great job with her anti-Scientology series “Aftermath”– is the cause of real misery for another actress, Erinn Hayes.

Hayes was signed to the CBS sitcom “Kevin Can Wait,” starring Kevin James. They did one season together, it was a hit, and Hayes should have looked forward to several more.

Instead, she’s out as James’s wife on the sitcom. Now CBS execs say when the series returns, there will be a time jump, and Hayes’s character will have died. In the interim James will have found love with Remini’s character, who was introduced at the end of last season as a guest star.

Remini, of course, co-starred with James for nine seasons on “King of Queens.”

So basically, Kevin can’t wait. The chemistry with Remini was just like old times. So Hayes gets the heave-ho.

How will they explain the sudden death of a beautiful young woman? Was she dressed like a peanut in a parade and shelled by an elephant? That’s what happened to Chuckles the Clown? Killed in a terrorist attack? Run over? Dead from a fast moving disease?

There’s something really unpalatable about all this. Hayes is 41 has been working steadily in TV for almost two decades. A series deal is a nice pay off for hard work in an iffy career. I don’t know her and I don’t watch the show, but I feel bad for her. And it makes me a little queasy about Remini, who’s basically taken a job from another actress. This is especially bad at CBS where no actress heads up any of their prime time shows. Was Hayes so interchangeable?

Ironically, the name of the two part episode in which Remini co-starred was called “Sting of Queens.” And this really does sting.
