0

“Oppenheimer” wins Best Picture, 7 statues in all !

Christopher Nolan wins after 24 years of making singularly spectacular movies.

Biggest surprise of the evening: Lily Gladstone loses Best Actress to Emma Stone.

UPDATED NOTES from the press room: “Oscarheimer” is coming. Christopher Nolan’s epic has won Best Supporting Actor, Cinematography, and Editing. Also Best Actor, Score, Best Director.

So far, the Oscars are great. John Mulaney’s recap of “Field of Dreams” is sublime. “I’m Just Ken” was the highlight of the night. In Memoriam was, as usual, a mess. The Bocellis are the worst over singers in history. It was impossible to see the featured people. It was all about the Bocellis. This segment was botched.

Oscars begin at 4pm West Coast, 7pm Eastern. Keep refreshing…

The audience is getting instructions. Stage manager tells audience: “Don’t fuck this up!”

Note: it’s taken a half hour to give one award. This will be a long night.

No one’s noticed that the supporting actors winners have the same initials. RDJ and JDR

It’s Oscars Day (or Night Depending on Where You Are) Can “Oppenheimer” Sweep?

0

The Oscars are coming tonight at 7pm on ABC. That’s 4pm on the West Coast. The show will be over around 7:30pm on the West Coast, which is weird but what can you do?

And the winner is? “Oppenheimer” is set for a big sweep. The good money says the Christopher Nolan epic has Best Picture, Director, Actor and Supporting Actor, Editing, Cinematography, Score and quite a few others.

“Oppenheimer” should only be lacking in Actress and Supporting Actress, and Song — if only they’d included “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” to the soundtrack.

Will there be a surprise? Probably the big one will be who sings the In Memoriam segment and which Hollywooders are left out. For some reason, In Memoriam is never right. Someone important will be omitted, certainly.

So far no one knows who the performer(s) will be for that part of the show. Even at rehearsal the information was scarce. Adele? No, she’s on a break from Las Vegas. Sophie Ellis Bexter? Unlikely. But there’s nothing like a good mystery.

It’s live TV, so there will be at least one screw up. And let’s hope so. The last thing anyone wants is a perfect, dull Oscars. A slap? Let’s hope not. The weirdest thing would be a Best Picture envelope mistake. No one wants that again!

Box Office: “Kung Fu Panda 4” Topples “Dune Two” with $58 Million Opening Weekend

0

Everybody was kung fu fighting this weekend.

Universal’s “Kung Fu Panda 4” scored a whopping $58 million opening weekend, the second highest so far of 2024.

“KFP” toppled “Dune Two” in its second weekend, and over took it easily. The kids have spoken.

Still cooking out there is “Bob Marley One Love” from Paramount heading to $90 million. That’s outstanding.

The rest of the box office is composed of films that are ready to go already. A new season is needed, and quickly. All the movies we’ll see on the Oscars tonight are done with their theatrical runs. Spring must come, and soon!

Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, A-Listers Meet for Dazzling Armani Pre Oscars Tribute to Martin Scorsese

Every year on the evening before the Oscars, Giorgio Armani Beverly Hills salutes an Oscar nominee.

Last night it was Martin Scorsese, the famed director of “Killers of the Flower Moon.” There were plenty of parties last night all over town, but this gathering was the hard ticket you couldn’t buy — and everyone wanted to be there.

Not only did Scorsese arrive to applause but so did Oscar nominees Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro, plus Thelma Schoonmaker, the Oscar nominated editor. So did legendary production designer Jack Fisk, Oscar nominated again, who was accompanied by his Oscar winning wife, Sissy Spacek.

Leonardo DiCaprio was expected but instead sent his father, stepmother, and publicists. You can’t have everything. But we ran into Jeffrey Wright, Willem Dafoe, Christoph Waltz, Jack Huston, Dolph Lundgren, Jane Seymour, Allison Williams, last year’s Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan, comedian John Mulaney and Olivia Munn, Ramy Yousseff, Scott Eastwood, Regé-Jean Page, Nicolas Cage, and so on. So many stars and Hollywood types jammed the gorgeous Armani store that Scorsese et al fled to the second level platform that was spontaneously turned into a VIP section.

What’s the expectation for tonight as “Oppenheimer” looms in almost every category? Schoonmaker told me on Friday night at the annual Women in Film bash: “We’re realistic about our chances. But we are all hoping and rooting for Lily.”

Gladstone wowed the deep crowd outside the Armani store and inside as well. When I caught up with her in the VIP section she told me she was still writing her potential acceptance speech, but hadn’t finished it yet. Gladstone’s awards circuit speeches have been so literate and engaging, I hope she gets to give a new one tonight!

PS We loved our time in the Armani boutique but alas, no gift bags! One female guest said to me: I keep bumping into this sequined top! it must mean something.” Not without a credit card!

One Direction’s Zayn Malik Trying Again with New Song That Might Unfortunately Be Called “Effed Up”

0

Zayn Malik left One Direction a decade ago. He had one hit called, “Pillow Talk.”

The rest of his musical output is negligible at best. He’s kind of a sad story in pop music. His solo records and videos have bordered on porn. They’re in appropriate and not well written.

Zayn is trying again this coming week. His new song, which might be called “Fucked Up,” cannot be played on radio with its main chorus. It sounds like an abandoned John Legend song.

Zayn is sort of like the woody Harrelson character from “Wag the Dog.” He got here accidentally, and he may pose a harm to us and to himself. Not sure if he has a manager or a label. I guess we’ll find out in the days ahead.

Hollywood’s Most Ubiquitous Guest Offers Rare View into Glamorous, Star Studded, No Press Party

Carl Tabor is Hollywood’s most ubiquitous guest. He posts videos and photos from the hottest parties, places where press is banned and the invites are as hard to get as nuclear codes.

Last night, Tabor posted from the William Morris Endeavor party at someplace called the Beverly House. It looks like a meeting at Versailles.

In the videos you’ll see lots of familiar faces, from Javier Bardem to Dustin Hoffman to Scott Eastwood.

Who is Carl Tabor? It’s a little unclear. I’ve noticed him around town at various events. He’s a clever guest, that’s obvious. He has exactly one credit on the imdb.com, for being additional crew on a 1994 movie called “Blankman.”

Tabor himself could be called Blankman. In his impeccable formal clothing, he cuts quite a figure. Celebrities don’t mind posing with him because he seems familiar. He looks vaguely like that actor who left “Grey’s Anatomy” years ago. No one is brave enough to ask him who he is, they just assume he’s Someone.

I will look for more Tabor posts this weekend, from the Oscars themselves to Vanity Fair and Elton John’s parties. This man should write a book, make a documentary, be the subject of a narrative film. He’s our own living Zelig. Mazel tov!

Box Office: “Kung Fu Panda 4” Chops Up Friday with $20 Mil Opening, Giving Universal Quite A Weekend

0

Universal Pictures is sitting pretty these days.

“Oppenheimer” is about to sweep the Oscars tomorrow. Focus Features’ “The Holdovers” is also looking good for a couple of big awards.

Now this weekend, “Kung Fu Panda 4,” is on top after a $20 million Thursday-Friday opening. Who even knew there was a “Kung Fu Panda 4”? The answer is; mothers and children.

The fourth iteration of this animated series will come close to $40 million for the weekend. Years ago, Universal sent out a Kung Fu Panda Halloween costume that I filed away somewhere. Time to see if it’s worth anything on ebay!

Focus has a bit of a flop on its hands with “Drive Away Dolls,” Ethan Coen’s lesbian road trip film, which has made around $5 million and is almost out of theaters after two weeks. But it’s early in the year, and they likely knew this one was not going to tear it up.

Meantime, A24 held an actual party for “The Zone of Interest” the other night, which is kind of macabre. This is another A24 project with lots of word of mouth but not much box office. Maybe if it wins something on Sunday that will help.

Remember Sizzling 1981 Noir Film, “Body Heat”? A Remake May Be in the Offing (Exclusive)

0

“Body Heat” was the Lawrence Kasdan classic that preceded his next classic, “The Big Chill,” back in 1981.

William Hurt, Kathleen Turner, Richard Crenna, and Ted Danson — in his first big movie role — stole the show in this modern film noir based loosely on another classic, “Double Indemnity.”

Well, I’m hearing rumors that “Body Heat” is ready for an update 40 years after its sultry humid Florida sweat made audiences crazy.

The director and co-writer is said to be “Boys Don’t Cry” skillful creator, Kimberly Peirce. The same director also has on her resume the excellent, “Stop/Loss,” and a remake of Brian dePalma’s “Carrie.”

This is what happens when you hang around in Hollywood for a few days. People talk, We listen.

Kathleen Turner played a conniving sexy younger wife of an older wealthy man (Crenna). She starts an affair with a local lawyer (Hurt) and eventually convinces him to help her kill the hubby and run away with the money. Danson also became famous for a little dancin’ (yes, similar to his name) he did throughout the film.

if it’s done right, a new “Body Heat” would be a blockbuster. Who should play these roles now? Matthew McConaughey comes to mind as Ned (Hurt). Turner’s character, Matty, sounds like Florence Pugh to me. But this is all above my pay grade. I can’t wait to see who the finalists are.

Vanity Fair Faces Oscar Night Competition For Its Last Successful Offering: The Party

0

The tents are up on Santa Monica Boulevard in Beverly Hills. The Vanity Fair Oscar party is back this Sunday.

But a lot has changed in recent years. The party that Graydon Carter created so successfully has a lot of competition now. It’s not what it was under the current regime. The magazine — with dwindling circulation and less internet traffic than ever — is not a must read. Often the covers have nothing to do with Hollywood at all.

And then there’s the magazine’s Hollywood issue, on sale now. Aside from Bradley Cooper, there are few other Oscar nominees and a lot of television people. The magazine could not get anyone from “Oppenheimer,” the expected Best Picture winner. Back in the day, Carter and his people would feature the heavy hitting stars of the day. Now the VF cover seems like it’s more about who would show up.

The party itself will get more attention than the magazine, that’s for sure. There will be plenty of red carpet photos of the stars. But many of these will be photo ops, stop-by’s on the way to other activities that didn’t exist in the old days.

For one thing, Universal Pictures is throwing a gala competing event for “Oppenheimer” and “The Holdovers” following the Oscar show. The studio is not fooling around. Apple is having a party for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” with Lily Gladstone — who’s expected to win Best Actress.

There’s also the Elton John party, which grabs a lot of attention from Vanity Fair, and raises money for the singer’s important AIDS Foundation. They will have Sir Elton, David Furnish, and plenty of stars including co-hosts Tiffany Haddish and Neil Patrick Harris.

And then there are overlapping after-after parties. Madonna and manager Guy Oseary pull a lot of the Vanity Fair crowd from the magazine’s red carpet right up into the Hollywood Hills. (No press allowed.) Jay Z and Beyonce welcome Black Hollywood to the Chateau Marmont, also by invite only and with a lot of security. There are major Black actors nominated for awards this year, none of whom have been on the cover of Vanity Fair. Where do you think they will go?

Vanity Fair is owned by Conde Nast, which has laid off hundreds of employees over the last couple of years. The magazine publisher is much diminished from its halcyon days. It won’t be lost on those who’ve been laid off that this annual event costs a lot of money and in the end, winds up being a meeting — according to my sources — now stuffed to the gills with ad reps.

Ariana Grande Drops a Soulful Max Martin Produced and Co-Written Album, Goes to Number 1

0

Ariana Grande understood the assignment, that’s for sure.

She put herself in the hands of Swedish powerhouse producer and songwriter Max Martin. (I told you about this last fall.)

The result is a winning, tuneful R&B album called “Eternal Sunshine.” Ariana wrote all the lyrics. Martin — who’s written dozens of great hits for everyone — did the music.

There’s only one “interpolation” — a semi cover of Brandy’s “The Boy is Mine.” Otherwise, the songs are fresh and melodic and catchy. Ariana sings, she doesn’t put her voice through any tricks. There’s no yodeling. Her gorgeous tones are heard clearly and straight on, with strings and real instruments playing behind her. There’s a trombone!

Like the movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” the album is about forgetting if not forgiving. In the movie, minds can be wiped clean of memories. It seems like Ariana would like to do that concerning her recently ended marriage. She’s moving on with her boyfriend, Ethan Slater, whom she met while making the “Wicked” movies.

The album has a lot of potential singles and very playable tracks that should give it a long life. We haven’t had one of those in a while. Nicely done.
