Michael Jackson Catalog Sale Completed: Total Value Was $600 Mil Lower Than Announced Last Year

I told you last year that the total value of the Michael Jackson music publishing company would not be $1.8 billion. I was right. It’s come in closer to $1.2 billion.

Variety reported the sale of a 50% interest to Sony Music Publishing was coming. Now they say it’s been completed. Sony will pay $600 million for half of Mijac and MJJ Publishing, although even that number seems high.

As I said last year, Michael didn’t write a lot of his own songs. He did amass a catalog of other people’s songs, which make up a big piece of this deal.

Read my original story here. See in that story all the songs in the catalog. Michael got that idea from Paul McCartney back in 1984.

This deal has nothing to do with the Beatles catalog. For a long time, Warner Chappell Music was the administrator for MJJ. This is a nice coup for Jon Platt, who ran Warner Chappell and is now in charge of Sony Music. Platt was feted last Saturday as an Industry Icon at Clive Davis’s pre Grammy dinner. He spoke for a long time but never mentioned this deal!

PS On a non business note, I ran into Paris Jackson at the Warner Music party last week. She is absolutely lovely, and a knockout beauty. Paris is making music and considers herself a rocker, which is fine. But something tells me bigger things are coming for her. Just hold on. Michael did a good job with his kids!

Kanye West Has Listening Party for New Album, Chants That He’s an “Anti-semite,” Says The Weeknd’s Label Won’t Approve Participation

0

Kanye West did not drop his new album, “Vultures,” last night. It’s not a surprise, frankly, and just as well.

The avowed antisemite and Hitler admirer should be shunned, away. I’m amazed anyone wants to hear what he has to say beyond what he’s already said. All his sponsors and business partners have dropped him because of it.

In Chicago last night, West filled up an arena for a listening party for “Vultures.” It didn’t start until 10pm. According to some reports, the live stream — which could be purchased for $19.99 — was cut off when West chanted “I’m still crazy, bipolar, antisemite, and I’m still the King.”

A post from West on X, taken from a deleted text he shared, claimed he couldn’t release the album because “Abel’s label” — meaning Universal, which distributes The Weeknd — wouldn’t approve their artist’s participation.

Tonight, West moves the circus to the UBS Arena near Belmont Park here in New York. According to Ticketmaster, there thousands of seats available.

PS Kudos to Kim Kardashian for letting her daughter, North, participate in this chaos.

Review: Billy Joel is Really Back This Week as Usher Samples a Lot of “Uptown Girl” Amid Forgettable Songs On 1st New Album in 8 Years

0

What is the point?

On Usher’s new album, “Coming Home,” the R&B star covers Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl.” He calls it “A-Town Girl” — meaning Atlanta — and then adds 9 other writers to the credits besides Joel.

Again, why? Because it’s one of maybe two songs on the new album that has a discernible chorus or melody. The rest of the collection is the usual mish mash of material that’s instantly forgettable.

You’d think after all this time, Usher would get the idea and record actual songs by songwriters. Eight seems to be the magic number, although some of these non tunes have just six or seven writers. There are two tracks previously available in other places including the excellent “Risk it All,” written by HER (Gabi Wilson) for the movie “The Color Purple.”

The only other track that stands out is called “Keep on Dancin'” with five songwriters. But it least it has a normal structure and it sticks in your head.

This isn’t to say that Usher won’t have a successful Super Bowl show on Sunday. He’s got enough older hits to get through, and he can throw in these two as well. But if he’s going to have everyone in the Las Vegas arena singing “Uptown Girl,” he might as well include Billy Joel as his special guest. There’s a reason Billy is back this week with a hot new record and Grammy appearance. The good songs and songwriters never go away.

“Coming Home” is self-released by Usher and LA Reid, and not on a regular label. The distributor is the new Apple backed company, Gamma. Apple is also underwriting the half time show on Sunday. But the computer giant probably won’t be able to use these lyrics in its commercials, like: “Won’t just open your legs (Ooh-ooh) / And then leave you for dead (Oh)”

this one is classic, too: I seen a million girls, but ain’t seen none like you
I got options, baby, but you still the one I choose

That’s the way to make a girl feel special!

Will This Be the End of “Days of our Lives”? Stunning Lawsuit from Arianne Zucker Threatens Long Running Show’s Existence

0

Actress Arianne Zucker’s lawsuit against her now former employer, “Days of our Lives,” went public big time today at a press conference. Zucker says she was fired last fall when NBC, the show, and producer Ken Corday retaliated against her for exposing EP Albert Alarr as an alleged sexual harasser.

Zucker has been a featured player on NBC’s 59 year old show, “Days of our Lives,” since 1998. The show is produced and owned by Ken Corday, whose parents — Ted and Betty — created it in 1965. Ted Corday died from cancer just a few months after the show debuted. For decades, his widow was in charge and the show was so hot it made the cover of Time magazine.

But in recent years, Ken Corday has turned “Days of our Lives” into a “Soap” style self-parody, with lots of science fiction stories, and two runs at having Satan take over characters’ lives. A couple of seasons back, NBC moved “Days” over to streaming on Peacock, where possibly about 1 million watch it. (That’s an estimate, since streamers don’t report numbers.)

At the press conference today, Zucker alleged constant harassment from former executive producer Albert Alarr over the last few years. Last spring, the show’s filming was paused for an investigation into Alarr’s treatment of actresses. He was fired in August.

That was around the time Zucker’s latest headaches began. She was briefly written out in 2018 but then returned to play Nicole Walker, a popular character. But now she was offered less pay for a new contract, and then dismissed. Because “Days” is taped well ahead, she’ll be in episodes for a couple more months. But it’s clear “Days” and Corday retaliated against her for being part of the group that pushed Alarr out.

Today, just before the press conference, Alarr and Corday denied all allegations and attacked Zucker. The show’s remaining, dwindling fans do not believe them. They are siding with Zucker. During the press conference, an actor who shares scenes with Zucker, Greg Vaughn, was tuned in to see what she had to say. Among the revelations in her suit and in person today: Corday Productions has no human resources department. And Zucker was ignored by Sony TV, which distributes the show.

Alarr’s attorney said: “As Albert said when Ms. Zucker first leveled these outrageous claims through the press last year, her baseless allegations were examined in a detailed and entirely independent investigation that lasted for two months. Dozens of individuals cooperated and every claim was thoroughly looked into. At the end of that process, the decision was made that Albert should continue in his role as Co-Executive Producer of Days of Our Lives.

He continued: “As Ms. Zucker’s own lawsuit all but admits, at a time of industry-wide cutbacks, she was aggressively seeking a significant personal pay increase and additional influence on the show. Having failed in those attempts, she is now – again – trying to exploit vile stereotypes to denigrate and demean a Black man who was in a position of power. Well, enough is enough. Every day for decades, Albert worked with hundreds of people who can – and will – testify about the falsity of Ms. Zucker’s mischaracterizations of him. We relish having a chance to share the truth and putting an end to her offensive claims once and for all.”

But Kola Boof, a former “Days” writer, said on X:

ALBERT ALARR was the “BOSS” & SHOW RUNNER of “Days of Our Lives”–he is married to a White woman that he appointed to the show as a Writer—-we have video clips of Mr. Alarr being inappropriate with female actresses on the show. We have set people whispering that Mr. Alarr behaves with the mindset of a male from the 1960’s and 1970’s (his humor, his viewpoints, his way of directing love scenes–he’s an Old School Good Ol Boys imitator). We have dozens of WOMEN who are telling the same exact story about this one man.

“I believe the accusations that ARI ZUCKER has brought against him are true and factual based on the overwhelming “word of mouth” and testimony of countless women behind the scenes at DAYS. They can’t all be “out to get a Black man.

“He’s using that argument because frankly –he has little else to stand on. KEN CORDAY allowed him to get away with this behavior for DECADES–and now times have changed & women don’t tolerate this behavior anymore & his actions are memorable and deplorable and have caught up with him.

“This is not about RACE. This man thinks his behavior is “Cute” & now it’s game over.”

Review: In Vegas, Guitar Legend Carlos Santana Finishes Up Blazing Winter Residency, Will Return in May to Sold Out Run at House of Blues

0

All winter, the big noise coming out of Las Vegas has been U2 at the Sphere, and Adele at Caesar’s. But the real crowd pleaser has been rock legend Carlos Santana. Last week, the crowd was moving and grooving to Carlos Santana’s virtuoso guitar performance at his residency gig at Las Vegas’ “House of Blues.” Any time Santana is playing, you know there will be a cluster of super talented musicians–including his wife, Cindy Blackman Santana.

Blackman, who has been married to Carlos since 2010, gave an extraordinary solo performance of her jazz rock drumming. She had a long resume before throwing in with Carlos, playing for years with Lenny Kravitz. But the magic between the couple is palpably, well “Smooth.”

Although singer Rob Thomas wasn’t around to sing their hit, “Smooth” which became the No. 1 single of the 2000’s, Andy Vargas and Ray Greene sang many of Santana’s hits to perfection. Furthermore, Mana’s  Fher Olvera surprised the audience with an on-stage appearance causing many to jump up in delight.

Among the hits played for the concert were “Maria, Maria,” “Supernatural Woman,” “Evil Ways,” and of course, “Oye Como Va.,”

Benny Rietveld, Santana’s bass player, also did a solo that showed off his gifts.

Other musicians included David K Matthews on keyboards, Karl Perazzo on percussion.

Many in the audience had also watched the documentary “Carlos” before seeing the sold-out show. (It’s on Apple TV.) “I had no idea that his father was a musician too,” said one reveler.

Carlos Santana also has a new single out called “Let the Guitar Play,” an apt title for this musician’s decades long journey entertaining so many and earning not only Grammys but the status of one of the best guitarists in the world. This new  song, he says, is inspired by his 2021 song “Song for Cindy.” He teamed up with producer Narada Michael Walden (Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey) as well as DMC’s Daryl McDaniels who sings rap inspired lyrics over Santana’s guitar. Well, yes, Carlos Santana’s strumming makes “Supernatural” sounds that have become his signature. And it is why so many singers want to be with Carlos in every genre. He makes every sound better

The universality of music as a connector also is part of what inspires Santana, he says. “Now more than ever, it is essential that we heal life, people and the planet,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame said. Well, his music both heals and inspires and makes you feel grateful and positive.

His next Las Vegas gig is in May for his House of Blues shows so buy tickets to see one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

Kanye West Dropping Album No One Wants, Tickets Not Selling for Friday Night Listening Party on Long Island

0

It does seem like Kanye West, avowed antisemite and Hitler lover, is dropping an album tonight.

It’s called “Vultures.” The video is out from director Jon Rafman, who I told you about recently. Rafman is Jewish, which is awful enough considering West’s statements and actions against Jews. Rafman was also accused on social media of such serious sexual misconduct that the New York Times reported the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC cancelled his show in 2020. (Two other museums cancelled shows also. Currently Rafman does have projects at other Canadian galleries.)

Tomorrow night, West has rented the UBS Arena near Belmont Park for a listening party. So far, few tickets have sold. They average $273 apiece.

Will all this happen? Will anyone show up? Will his wife show up, naked? Does anyone care at this point? Not much. All that blue is unsold so far. My guess is they just give away the rest to fill the arena.

PS The show is destined to begin very late. So everyone can sue Kanye the way they did Madonna!

Arianne Zucker’s “Days of our Lives” Lawsuit May Explain the Constant Turnover of Actresses–and Actors–at the 59 Year Old Soap (Read Full)

0

Once fans of “Days of our Lives” read this lawsuit filed by Arianne Zucker (she’s played Nicole since the 90s) you’ll get an idea why the show is so crazy. Actresses–and actors — come and go. The writers can’t keep up with the cast changes. Now we may have an idea about what’s going on over there — and why some popular actresses have left and refused to return.

FSCC Zucker Complaint by showbiz411

“Days of Our Lives” Star Arianne Zucker Sets 2PM Press Conference for Thursday After Suing the Show Over Fired EP’s Alleged Sexual Misconduct

0

“Days of our Lives” fans now know why 25 year vet Arianne Zucker left the show in 2017. (She returned in 2018.)

Zucker alleges that now former executive producer Albert Alarr was sexually harassing her — and other actors — for years. Alarr was finally fired last August.

This may also explain why the turnover among actresses at “Days” — which is now on Peacock — has been so high. Characters are written in and out of storylines without much notice or reason. But this could be the reason.

Zucker will have a press conference tomorrow, Thursday, at 2pm Eastern with her attorney to take questions and discuss the complaint.

Zucker’s lawyer Anahita Sedaghatfar says a statement concerning Corday Productions: “Ms. Zucker did what we tell all women who experience harassment to do, and that is to report it. Ms. Zucker did just that and was the voice for other women who were too scared to come forward. “Rather than condone her bravery, Ms. Zucker alleges that Corday retaliated against her and because she spoke out she has lost a job she was devoted to for two decades. As part of this lawsuit we will seek to ensure that Corday provides sexual harassment training to its employees and hires an intimacy coordinator to be on set for sex scenes.”

Ken Corday, who owns the show his parents created in 1965, hasn’t made a comment yet. According to reports when Alarr was fired last summer, Corday had turned over the running of the show some time ago and may have ignored repeated complaints.

For Zucker to file the suit while still appearing on the show speaks volumes. You may recall a separate incident that involved the actress. She was the one Donald Trump and Billy Bush were caught on tape disparaging in a famous “Access Hollywood” video. Zucker probably has just had enough of all these people. Who can blame her? But this is what so many actresses in Hollywood go through on a regular basis.

Zucker alleges in the complaint that Alarr’s behavior started from the moment he was on the show. (Since he was fired, his wife and son still work there.)

From the complaint:

“…he [Alarr] repeatedly subjected Plaintiff and other employees to severe and pervasive harassment and discrimination, including sexual harassment, based upon their female gender.”

“That Alarr engaged in this illegal behavior was well known to Defendants Corday and Ken Corday and to the HR department of Sony Pictures Television (the distributor of Days of Our Lives) for years. Indeed, Alarr has been accused by numerous individuals of making sexually charged inappropriate and gender hostile remarks, and of bullying and intimidating fem ale employees. Alarr has been accused of groping female members of the cast, and in at least one instance, forcibly kissing an actress against her will. Many prominent actresses that worked under Alarr have spoken publicly about Alarr’s misconduct dating back for years, and how their complaints to Defendants Corday and Ken Corday fell upon deaf ears.”

More:

Alarr would frequently grab and tightly hug Plaintiff, purposely pushing her breasts onto his chest, while moaning “Oh Ari!” Alarr’s unwelcome physical touching made Plaintiff feel offended,
uncomfortable, humiliated and intimidated. Indeed, on many occasions, Alarr forcefully touched Plaintiff without her consent during dry blocking of scenes. Alarr would put his hands on Plaintiff’s waist, with his thumbs placed just above her vagina, and move her around, all the while smirking and grinning in a sexual manner, making Plaintiff extremely uncomfortable and violated.”

There’s more, and it just gets worse. It wasn’t just the sexual misconduct. Zucker, who is Jewish, claims Alarr allowed antisemitic comments:

“…an actress on the show made anti-Semitic remarks against Jews (such as the Ukraine war was about getting rid of the “dirty Jews”). Alarr was present when these comments were made, and rather than protest or report this, he began to laugh, implying he agreed with the horrendous comments. Alarr was well aware that Plaintiff is one of three Jewish people on the show.”

If anyone reading this knows more about Alarr, email me in confidence at showbiz411@gmail.com.
