The Real Criminal in Mia Farrow’s Family: Her Brother, John, Serving 10 Years in Maryland Prison for Child Molestation

0

Mia Farrow’s strange and sad family has an actual criminal in it, and it’s not Woody Allen. Woody has never been arrested for anything, tried for anything, or accused of any crime other than Mia’s accusations against him in 1992.

The actual criminal is her brother, John Villers-Farrow. He was convicted in 2013 of molesting two underage boys. The crimes were committed between 2002 and 2008. He is now serving a ten year sentence at Patuxent Correctional Institution in Maryland, where he lived.

John Villers-Farrow pleaded guilty to molesting the boys over a period about six years. One of the boys was six years old when it started. The other was nine years old.

Neither Dylan Farrow, Mia’s daughter, nor Ronan, her brother (and Woody’s biological child), or Mia have mentioned this in their campaigns to destroy Allen. They have never expressed sympathy for  John Farrow’s victims, either.

Mia Farrow’s family is full of tragedy. Her other brother, Patrick Farrow, committed suicide in 2009, shooting himself in his New England art galley. An adopted son., Thaddeus, shot himself to death in 2016. An adopted daughter, Tam, died from heart failure at age 19 in 2000. Another adopted daughter, Lark, died in 2008 from pneumonia after struggling with AIDs and drug addiction.

Allen married Farrow’s adopted daughter Soon Yi in 1997 after a five year relationship. They have two adopted daughters, one of whom seems like she may become a filmmaker.

Exclusive: “Mr. Robot” Actor Rami Malek May Take Legal Action Against Ex-“Bohemian Rhapsody” Director Bryan Singer

0

EXCLUSIVE You’ve heard the story about “Bohemian Rhapsody” director Bryan Singer getting fired off the Queen-Freddie Mercury movie.

Singer disappeared from the London set, claimed he was taking care of an ill parent. At the same time, stories surfaced everywhere that Singer and star Rami Malek — highly regarded from his work in “Mr. Robot” and in the film “Short Term 12″ — were not getting along, and that Malek had taken his complaints to the executives in charge at Fox.

Singer acknowledged this week that he and Malek had had problems on the set. Singer said in a statement: “Rumors that my unexpected departure from the film was sparked by a dispute I had with Rami Malek are not true. While, at times, we did have creative differences on set, Rami and I successfully put those differences behind us and continued to work on the film together until just prior to Thanksgiving.”

Now I’m hearing that Malek’s “problems” were more than just complaining about how to act in a scene. Sources say Singer’s behavior toward Malek was allegedly worse than simple misconduct, and that Malek is considering legal action against his former director.

Singer is not new to legal claims. He was sued this week by a man who claims Singer assaulted him in 2003, when he was seventeen. Singer’s lawyer categorically denied the charges and vowed to fight them. In 2014, Singer was among a number of defendants sued by Michael Egan, for sexual assault. That case was dismissed, Both the new case and the Egan case are represented by attorney Jeff Herman, who has a sketchy history. He’s been suspended from practicing law and was once accused of rape.

But Herman isn’t part of this story.

Stay tuned. I’m waiting now for a response from Malek’s side.

Oscars: Academy Short List for Documentaries Pits Jane Goodall Against Al Gore, the Grateful Dead, and A Dead Black Man

0

The short list is out for the documentaries eligible for the Oscars. Five will be chosen as the final nominees. It’s a very competitive year, pitting Jane Goodall against famed filmmaker Agnes Varda and Al Gore. That’s right, Al Gore’s sequel to “An Inconvenient Truth” made the cut. So did the Grateful Dead, and a Hasidic woman’s brave journey to mainstream life. One of the most profound people I’ve met this season is Yance Ford, who made “Stronger Island.” Please watch this film on Netflix. Ford made a speech at the Gotham Awards that took everyone’s breath away. The story of William Ford’s death is profound.

American Film Institute Includes “Wonder Woman” in Top 10 Films of Year– Will Oscars?

0

The American Film Institute surprised everyone today by including Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” in their top 10 of the year. Will the Oscars follow suit? I don’t think so, but you never know. Missing from the AFI list are “The Darkest Hour” and “Phantom Thread,” one of which will most certainly take the place of “Wonder Woman” at the big show. The rest of their choices are pretty much as the year has shaken out everywhere.

On the TV side I am really happy to see “Insecure.” I adore Issa Rae’s show. As much as I miss seeing “Veep” on the list, “Insecure” is the right move. And kudos to the NBC publicists. They’ve got “This Is Us” and “The Good Place” on the list– the only broadcast TV shows.

Bob Gazzale and pals at AFI did an excellent job.

Review: Daniel Day Lewis May Have Sewn Up His Fourth Oscar in Possible Final Movie, “Phantom Thread”

0

The problem with review embargoes is that you tend to lose the passion you had for the movie while waiting. Luckily, that didn’t happen with Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread.” It’s a piece of art, a gem, and PTA’s best work in a long time.

This is also maybe Daniel Day Lewis’s last film since he says he’s retiring. As Reynolds Woodcock (what a name), a famed British fashion designer  hobbled by ego and hubris, DDL is quite amazing– reminiscent of Orson Welles in “Citizen Kane” but beyond that into something more intellectually sinister. DDL may very likely win his fourth Oscar.

We’ve written about this movie a couple of times. What begins as a sort of townhouse drama turns into a Hitchockian nightmare. There’s a plot twist and then a last minute decision– each of them will keep you on your toes. Anderson refuses to give us the movie we want or expect, which is his right and also what will keep this film alive for years to come.

Lesley Manville is sensational as Reynolds’s sister, a Mrs. Danville who runs his fashion firm with a motherly-sexual seeming attachment to her brother. It’s a subtle performance, and one worth examining a few times. It’s wonderful that she has what we think of as a male name, too– Cyril. Cyril! And close to Cecil, the first name of DDL’s real life late father.

And then there’s newcomer Vicky Krieps as Alma, the mysterious waitress whom Reynolds picks up in a seaside cafe and turns into his muse and lover. Their great love story becomes Lady Macbeth in one direction, and then something else that will surprise you.

Will men be frightened off of “Phantom Thread” because it’s about fashion? No, because it’s not about fashion. The dresses (they are beautiful and the attention to detail is spot on) are the least of it. This is no fashion show. There is no runway. The Woodcocks live almost in a haunted house, full of ghosts of the past and some of the future. Quite stunning.

Writers Guild Awards TV Nominations Best Comedy, Drama: No Shows from Broadcast TV, All Cable and Streaming Services

0

As usual the big networks– ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox– have no nominations for Best Comedy or Drama from the Writers Guild. The shows are all from cable and streaming services. The most bizarre snubs continue to be programs from Showtime. What the heck? What is the problem? “Billions” and “Homeland” were spectacular this past season.

In comedy, “Seinfeld” casts a long shadow as both “Veep” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” are nominated. We can’t live without them.

Kudos to Ron Carlivati, who writes “Days of Our Lives.” His team and the one from “General Hospital” were nominated for Daytime Drama. Carlivati is famous for glib dialogue and for reviving dead characters. He always gets it right.

Al Franken Resigns from the Senate Despite Support and Questions that He’s Been Railroaded from Office

Al Franken resigned from the US Senate today. A lot of questions remain about whether and how he was railroaded from office. Not everyone agrees with this decision. I think Minnesota, especially, will regret losing such a great advocate.

Pop Star Ed Sheeran Got His MBE Today from Prince Charles at a Real “Castle on the Hill”

0

Pop star Ed Sheeran got something better than a Grammy Award today: an MBE from Prince Charles.

It’s not a knighthood, but it’s the first step toward getting one. To receive it, Ed had to go to a real “Castle on the Hill”– Buckingham Palace.

The MBE is quite an achievement. It’s also notable that Queen Elizabeth has turned this duty over to Prince Charles. He may yet become king.

Eminem Going Tony Bennett Duets Route with New Album Featuring Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Ed Sheeran, Pink

0

Eminem– Marshall Mathers to you– has a new album called “Revival” on December 15th. It seems like Em is going the Tony Bennett duets route. “Revival” features special guests Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, Pink, Alicia Keys, X Ambassadors, Kehlani, and Skylar Grey. The latter, a talented singer songwriter, has also written a couple of songs on the album including the Beyonce single, “Walk on Water.”

Notable on this list is the lack of hip hop or rap guests. The only one is Phresher, who collaborates on a song called “Chloraseptic.” It’s unclear if that’s a commercial for the sore throat spray.

What’s next? Why, Eminem at Caesar’s Palace, I’d guess. A guest spot on the Hallmark Channel. A joint venture with the Food Channel. A line of dishware at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

  1. “Walk on Water” (featuring Beyoncé)
  2. “Believe”
  3. “Chloraseptic” (featuring Phresher)
  4. “Untouchable”
  5. “River” (featuring Ed Sheeran)
  6. “Remind Me (Intro)”
  7. “Remind Me”
  8. “Revival (Interlude)”
  9. “Like Home” (featuring Alicia Keys)
  10. “Bad Husband” (featuring X Ambassadors)
  11. “Tragic Endings” (featuring Skylar Grey)
  12. “Framed”
  13. “Nowhere Fast” (featuring Kehlani)
  14. “Heat”
  15. “Offended”
  16. “Need Me” (featuring Pink)
  17. “In Your Head”
  18. “Castle”
  19. “Arose”

Barbra Streisand Coming to Sony Music’s Rescue Friday with Stealth “Memories” Live Album

0

It’s not getting much advance PR, but Barbra Streisand’s releasing a live album on Friday that should take her straight to number 1.

The timing is perfect because Columbia Records is in dire need of a chart hit right now. They’ve been dry for weeks except for Mariah Carey’s Christmas album. Streisand at number 1 will give the Sony label the shot of adrenaline it needs.

Streisand’s release is “The Music, the Mem’ries, the Magic,” the live audio part of her Netflix concert that’s already airing on the TV like platform. The deluxe version contains some songs she’s rarely performed, like “By the Way” from 1975. Streisand wrote it herself for the “Lazy Afternoon” album. She’s only sung it live three times, just for this tour and album.

The album is already sitting at number 58 on Amazon without much fanfare. The last time Barbra had a new release– her “Encores” album– she appeared on Jimmy Fallon and went right to number 1. Let’s see if she turns up on late night TV next week.

Meantime, U2’s new release, “Songs of Experience,” may only come in at number 2 this Friday with sales hovering around 100,000. Great reviews, I loved it personally. But maybe it’s backlash from the “Songs of Innocence” release that was forced onto iTunes accounts. This one has so many great songs, take a listen.
