Watch: Trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” Plays Off How “The Godfather” Was Panned At First

0

The trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis.”

Acknowledging that the film already has negative press and reviews, Coppola has made a trailer that starts with negative reviews for “The Godfather.”

Of course, that movie went on to be regarded as the greatest film since “Citizen Kane.”

The reviews are from the top reviewers of the time, from Vincent Canby to John Simon to Rex Reed and more.

So maybe “Megalopolis” is better than you’ve heard?

We won’t know until we’ve seen it, but it looks like an Italian opera. There’s no discernible plot but there is that light sabre of a T square, and Adam Driver with short hair.

As a trailer, there’s something odd: I’m not digging the voice over at all. Not the right sound.

Still, looking forward to seeing this maybe a couple of times.

DNC Night 2 Was So Good Even Meghan McCain Liked It: “Blows the RNC’s Roll Call Out of the Water”

0

It was a magical night 2 for the Democratic National Convention.

The roll call, assisted by DJ Cassidy, was so inventive and cool that even Republican Meghan McCain, daughter of the late John McCain, fan girled over it.

She wrote: “I’m sorry but this #DNC2024 roll call with DJ Cassidy, themed state music and party/club atmosphere is blowing the RNC’s roll call out of the water. It looks like a giant party and celebration and everyone in that room looks like they’re having a blast.”

I’ve been to three conventions in my life, but this one looks like the one I should have gone to. The DNC has turned the convention into a party. It’s light and breezy. Everyone is happy to be there. I’d like to start a drinking game for every time I’ve heard the word “joy.”

She’s so right. I love the roll call every four years. You see how diverse this country really is, cool people from all walks of life contributing the American dream. I love the people from the non-states, especially: Guam, Puerto Rico, the Marianna Islands, the Virgin Islands. They are depending on us to make the right decisions.

The main speeches were all home runs. Doug Emhoff sure knows what he’s doing. By the time he finished talking his blended family, taking the bus to Hebrew School, and his daughter getting private time with Kamala, he had the audience eating out of his hand.

But the big deals were Michelle and Barack Obama. Her speech was like a hit single that wins the Grammy and stays at number 1 for weeks. That speech may go down in history for its shape and humor. Her delivery deserved an award.

Her hand off to Barack was so full of love, it was hard to imagine what Melania Trump was thinking at home (if she was even listening). She has no relationship to her husband. The Obamas, the Emhoffs, and the Walzes are rare examples of great couples families.

Then Obama’s speech was like a Grammy winner Album of the Year, but a concept album, like “Dark Side of the Moon.” It had so many hits woven by interstitial moments of greatness. It was a spectacular composition that landed with a charge.

As for DJ Cassidy, whom I’ve known since he was starting out, wow: what an effort he put into scoring the whole roll call. He had music bits for every state. He knew when to turn down the volume so we could hear the speakers. But it was choices that were so spot on.

I loved it when used The B52’s “My Own Private Idaho” for Idaho. That was amazing. I was surprised that he didn’t use Aretha Franklin for Michigan — he moved her to Maryland. But then Eminem was his Michigan choice. Aretha wouldn’t be happy, but it all worked out.

Production of this DNC is Emmy winning considering that a month ago there were different candidates.

Media disappointment: the big three networks still running crap until 10pm, missing all the good stuff. Fox News insisting on trying to instigate a riot out front, putting the police on the screen. Fox News is unerring in managing to miss the real news. But MSNBC and even CNN did a fine job. I was impressed with Ari Melber’s rap knowledge. He really loves it!

Trump Says: “You can’t walk across the street to get a loaf of bread, you get shot, you get mugged, you get raped”

0

What world is Donald Trump living in?

Today he said, “You can’t walk across the street to get a loaf of bread, you get shot, you get mugged, you get raped.”

It’s not just the crime statistics, which are way down. But Trump hates the idea of cities, populated by diverse people, and only knows to instigate fear. None of this is true. American cities are thriving.

Popular? Democrats Trump Republicans in First Night of Convention TV Ratings

Popular? Democrats Trump Republicans in First Night of Convention TV Ratings

0

Nielsen ratings is reporting that last night was huge for the Democrats.

Their convention scored 20 million viewers over all networks including CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and all the broadcast channels.

That’s higher than any of the first three nights of the Republican convention. The fourth night of the RNC scored 25 million. That could be eclipsed this Thursday.

Last night’s DNC was a lovefest, with one great speaker after another. Highlights included Hillary Clinton, Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia, Jill Biden, and of course the powerful and emotional speech from Joe Biden.

The show ran from 10pm to 12:30am on the East Coast.

The Democrats didn’t stop in their accurate attacks on Trump and the GOP. But they did something the Republicans didn’t: they offered hope, a path forward, and used the word “joy” as much as possible.

Unlike the GOP, the Dems do not think we live in a ruined third world country where everything has gone to hell. They believe in the future. It was a reassuring night of TV about America.

Tonight comes Barack Obama, who should send the ratings soar.

RIP Bennifer 2.0 as JLo Files For Divorce from Ben Affleck, Says It Ended Back in April

0

TMZ reports that JLo has finally filed for divorce from Ben Affleck.

Lopez says in the filing that the marriage ended back in April. This was their second time around, but first marriage.

According to the site, there was no prenup and there’s still no settlement. They each have untold millions so there won’t be too much trouble extricating them from this thing.

During the marriage, Affleck has produced several hits. But Lopez lost $20 million of her own money gambling on an album and longform video that fizzled.

The album and the documentary, all about their love story as told by Lopez, seems to have preceded the end of the marriage by 10 weeks. The album was called “This is Me…Then.” The film was called “The Greatest Love Story Never Told.”

Their only collaboration was a Dunkin Donuts commercial.

Lopez has spent the summer shedding the whole ordeal, traveling to Europe and then to Hamptons. I was told that someone in the Hamptons is driving the highest-end Porsche with license plated “Ben Jen.”

They bought a $60 million mansion. Did they ever hear the doors creak? Swat a mosquito? Clean up the kitchen? Check the sprinklers?

And so it goes.

Sign o’ the Times: Hot Movie Star Glen Powell Already Going for TV Series, on Hulu

0

Glen Powell has been the hot movie star of 2024. He’s had huge hits with “Anyone But You” and “Twisters.” His own “Hit Man” was a Netflix hit and could have done very well at the box office.

But Powell is part of a new generation. In the old days, movie stars only took TV series when their careers on the big screen were waning. It’s all different now. Movies are a big gamble. So Powell is headed to the small screen.

Powell will play a big college football star who loses his luster in some kind of scandal, changes his name and moves to a small town, where he’ll play for a local team. Call it “Ted Lasso,” because you know he will save the team.

Or call it “Coach,” with a twist.

Powell is 35, so it’s unclear how long his title character, “Chad Powers,” has been out of work. Steve Zahn co-stars in this comedy co-created and executive produced by Powell and Michael Waldron.

“Chad Powers” will be on Hulu, which has quickly become the hot streaming platform.

James Taylor Speaks Out After Getting Bumped from the DNC Show Last Night (Watch Here)

0

James Taylor got bumped from last night’s DNC show when it ran late.

He can blame Joe Biden, who got a five minute ovation prior to his speech and four minutes more after.

Taylor was supposed to sing Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend.” But on the East Coast it was so late, convention organizers pulled the plug. Maybe Taylor will get a rain check for the inauguration. Thanks to Susan Page for taking some video of the rehearsal and posting it to Twitter.

SOS Anna Wintour Forced With a Gun or Stiletto Her Head to Invite Strangers Into Her Office for $5,000 a Pop

SOS!

Vogue editor Anna Wintour has been forced by Conde Nast to invite strangers into her office.

Anna has sent a message — wearing sunglasses, possibly with a gun or stiletto to her head — on Instagram. She looks angry. She might be sending a message with her eyes but we can’t seem them. Still, her demeanor suggests that this is against her will.

Has she been taken hostage by Roger Lynch? (He’s the guy that runs Conde Nast, or what’s left of it.)

For $2,000 to $5,000 you can spend the day at Vogue this October trying on very small clothes or being reprimanded or maybe getting fired from a job you don’t have. From the tone of the message, it’s all very serious and troubling and disturbing.

Anna will only give opening remarks, then quickly decamp before anyone can ask her for a ticket to the Met Ball or even god forbid shake hands.

Count me in!

Trump Aims Lies at Biden on His Social Media Platform as Stock Drops to New Low Following DNC Celebration

0

Investors in Donald Trump’s Trump Media obviously got spooked last night.

With a rousing celebration of Joe Biden on the DNC’s first night, Trump Media stock has dropped to a new all time low.

As of 2:20pm, Trump stock for his Truth Social is at $21.70. That’s a dollar lower than yesterday, and 50 points lower than its beginnings earlier this year.

One reason for the drop is that Trump took to Truth Social today to attack Biden. This is called ‘not reading the room.’ It’s bizarre but no more bizarre than anything else Trump has done.

Every single word of Trump’s is a lie. Who would invest in this company?

Wacky Jack Schlossberg, JFK Grandson, Will Introduce Barack Obama Tonight at the DNC

0

Jack Schlossberg is taking time from paddleboarding to address the Democratic National Convention tonight.

Wacky Jack, 31, is famous for his nutty social media posts in which he sings, dances, and tries out various accents.

Schlossberg has no actual job, but serves as Kennedy grandson with aplomb.

He says on Instagram tonight he’ll precede former President Barack Obama on stage at the convention.

Will he sing? Will he dance? Will he try out accents? I sure hope so. Maybe he’ll rail against his eve nuttier cousin, Robert Kennedy Jr.
