The Golden Globes host Jarrod Carmichael is drawing extreme criticism for his nasty joke about Whitney Houston tonight. He quipped that they wanted to thank the Beverly Hilton, “the hotel that killed Whitney Houston.” I doubt the Globes will be invited back to the hotel.
Carmichael has been a resounding dud but the winners tonight gave heartfelt speeches. Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Coolidge, and Michelle Yeoh were especially moving. Many of the winners, though, didn’t thank the Hollywood Foreign Press. And Cate Blanchett, winner of Best Actress in a Drama, didn’t bother to show up.
Ratings will be terrible, but that’s no surprise. But Carmichael’s flop of a monologue concerning the Globes’ racism problems didn’t do anyone any favors.
