Deadline.com is reporting that “The Goldbergs” star Wendi McClendon-Covey has signed a new deal with ABC TV.
The report suggests that this is an indication “The Goldbergs” will be renewed for a 10th season.
The show is fairly low rated, but ABC has nothing to replace it. Still, they have a problem.
As I reported a couple of weeks ago, “The Goldbergs” has been pretending since January that Jeff Garlin’s character, Murray, is somewhere around but on screen. The show uses a stand in for him to pretend that Murray is still in the family.
But Garlin left “The Goldbergs” a few months ago after complaints to HR that he used bad language on the set. Imagine that. Garlin is a comedian and star of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” But in this new pristine environment, his Borscht Belt ways didn’t go over.
“The Goldbergs” will have to kill off Murray if they’re coming back for Season 10. Getting rid of Garlin won’t be easy. The show already lost the great George Segal to actual death last year.
The sitcom is relatively uninteresting as it stands now. It’s like white noise. It’s like other ABC comedies of the recent past– see “The Middle” — that you’re surprised to discover are still on the air!
