Last night. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” crossed a landmark line in film history. It’s the first ever to make $900 million.
J.J. Abrams’ extravaganza is already the biggest movie in US history, far outdistancing number 2, “Avatar.” But the $900 million mark is the rarest occurrence of all time. The famous sequel is barreling toward $1 billion. It may not make it, but it will get close.
Of course, internationally “Star Wars” has already made $1 billion apart from the U.S. Disney can safely say it was a success. The three original principals– Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill– can’t be unhappy. And Ford will be back. As he told me a few weeks ago, Han Solo is “just resting.” With that kind of money, Ford can’t possibly be out of “Star Wars.”
