“Star Wars” The Studio Awakens to $400 Mil Christmas Day, Near $900 Mil Global

Han, Leia, Poe, Rey, Finn, BB8, et al found a big present at the bottom of their Christmas tree today. “Star Wars” started the day, December 25th, with $391,051,329 in box office receipts. The blockbuster made $27.6 million on Christmas Eve.  Sometime around noon, I guess, the film soared past $400 million to around $420 million or thereabouts. The global total is nearing $900 million.

That’s a nice Christmas present for Disney and Bob Iger, not to mention all the people who worked on the film who get profit participation. George Lucas (who still gets a taste of something somewhere and mmm mmm good) should be happy. Besides having made him a fortune, “Star Wars” is a legacy for him as a writer and creator of characters people are still talking about and adoring some 40 years later.

Disney should have no problem making it to $2 billion.

As a matter of perspective: “Phantom Menace” total US was $475 million. “Attack of the Clones” was $310 million. “Revenge of the Sith,” the last “Star Wars” movie in 2005, made a domestic  total of $380 million.

“The Force Awakens” is a phenom. My guess is by the time the trilogy ends, patricide will not be its lasting legacy.
