Broadway Closing of “Swept Away” Postponed for 2 Weeks Despite No Ticket Sales

Broadway’s “Swept Away,” musical that addresses cannibalism on the high seas, was supposed to close on Sunday.

Instead, this indisgestive examination of life among stranded sailors on a row boat, will marshal on for two more weeks until December 29th.

The producers say this is because there was a “sudden surge” of ticket sales among fans of the Avett Brothers, whose music “Swept Away” bends to its will.

But a quick check of Telecharge and other ticket brokers suggests that the extra two weeks are completely open. The seat maps are seas of blue. The high seas are calm as a sheet of ice. Want to see “Swept Away”? Come on it!

Maybe the “Surge” is not yet recorded. But so far, there’s no evidence the Longacre Theater could not be closed. Could be it’s a union contract preventing “Swept Away” from going out with the tide on Sunday. But it’s not because Christmas audiences are yearning for a little hi ho and give me a fork.

Broadway is otherwise booming. The best new show of the season, “Maybe Happy Ending,” an original musical of wit, charm, and really catchy songs, is up to 84% capacity. Go see it while tickets are still available!
