Cannes can!
The French film festival has set its opening film with “Annette” starring Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver, directed by Leo Carax. The festival starts July 6th.
To make this happen, French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron said yesterday on CBS’s “Face the Nation” they will open the country to vaccinated travelers. France has a zooming COVID rate and is in the middle of its third lockdown. But Macron is certain that by June those of with two shots can take a chance.
“We will progressively lift the restrictions of the beginning of May, which means that we will organize in the summer time with our professionals in France for French European citizens, but as well for American citizens,” Macron said in an interview with “Face the Nation” that aired Sunday. “So we are working hard to propose a very concrete solution, especially for U.S. citizens who are vaccinated, so with a special pass, I would say.”
I’m personally excited but wary. Thousands of foreigners converging on the Croisette just a couple of months after the country was under siege may turn off a lot of attendees. Also, what about the movie stars? Will they be wearing masks on the red carpet? If so, they will be the most stylish in history.
And movies? Thierry Fremaux is no doubt beating the drums to get the best movies, and to upstage the Venice Film Festival coming in late August.
I know Spike Lee must be excited! He will finally head the Jury after last year’s postponement!
